Introdution This data book ontains omprehensive information on Barum Car and Van Tyres. The tehnial data and other details on tyres and aessories have been ompiled to reflet as exatly and ompletely as possible the urrent state of development andarebasedonetrto 1), ISO 2) and WdK/DIN 3) standards. Most of the Barum tyres omply with DOT 4) regulations and are marked aordingly. They are homologated in aordane with the relevant ECE 5) regulation and are hene also homologated in aordane with urrent EU 6) tyre regulation. This databook is intended for information and instrution only. No liability whatsoever will be aepted for damage, regardless of its nature and its legal basis, arising from advie given in this book. Safety hints Tyre safety tips We reommend that the inflation pressure of every tyre is heked at least every 14 days. Avoid driving over sharp-edged or pointed objets. Lower inflation pressures, greater loads or higher speeds than speified by the vehile and/or tyre manufaturer all shorten the servie life of tyres and an result in strutural damages. We reommend that new tyres are run in at moderate speeds for the first 120 to 190 miles (200 to 300 km) to roughen the tread surfae. The tyre does not ahieve its best performane until after this running-in period. We reommend all wheel positions of a passenger ar are fitted with tyres of the same tread design. Please observe the detailed operating instrutions on page 41 ff. 1) ETRTO The European Tyre and Rim Tehnial Organisation, Brussels 2) ISO International Organization for Standardization 3) DIN German Institute for Standardization, Berlin WdK German Rubber Manufaturers Assoiation, Frankfurt/M. 4) DOT Department of Transportation (USA) 5) ECE Eonomi Commission for Europe (UNO-Institution, Geneva) 6) EU European Union, formerly EEC SAFETY WARNING! The instrutions given in this databook must be! observed to ensure vehile safety at all times. This applies espeially with respet to tyre inflation pressure reommendations. Non-ompliane with these instrutions means risking tyre damage whih, if serious enough, may result in a tyre bursting. It is hazards like these that an ause traffi aidents involving vehile damage and/or serious personal injury. 2 Tehnial Databook Car Tyres

Units of measurement and definitions of the tehnial data The tehnial data in the tables omply generally with international standards. All dimensions in the tables of this databook are given in millimetres, if not indiated in a different way. The rim diameter is given in inh ode. Tyre ranges on new rim types may also be marked in mm. Constrution measurements are theoretial values for the design of the tyre: The width is relative to the smooth sidewall, the outer diameter to the tread entre. Maximum measurements are atual operating measurements of the inflated tyre (operating pressure) in the unloaded state. They inlude growth but exlude dynami distortions. The width is the max. permitted tyre width, inluding sidewall deorative markings, when the tyre is mounted on the orret rim. The outer diameter is the max. permitted diameter. The max. measurements are binding for vehile designers. The stati radius is the distane between the wheel entre and the ground ontat path under max. load at the reommended tyre pressure. The rolling irumferene is the distane overed by a point on the irumferene when the tyre revolves one at 60 km/h (37 mph). The load apaity in kilograms (kg) is weight in thesenseofamass. Tyre pressure (inflation pressure) is given in bar as an overpressure (old tyre), for driving speeds up to 160 km/h (100 mph). Vehile designers should bear in mind the maximum values for tyre outer diameter and width when planning the wheel spae of a vehile, if all standard approved tyres are to fit without any restritions. Should this by way of exeption not be possible, the safety risk must be eliminated by taking appropriate measures. Tehnial Databook Car Tyres

Types of rims Thewell-baserimisvirtuallytheonlytypeofrim used on ars, aravans and other ar trailers: Well-base rims = one-piee rims, deepened well foreasiertyrefitting,5h tapered bead seat, x in the wheel size designation. Virtually only J and B versions of the well-base rim are used and these are explained here in more detail. If rubber valves (snap-in type) are used on rims for higher speeds, these must be fitted with valve supports where neessary. Also refer to the setion Fitting the tyre. 3. Wheel dis (nave) The wheel dis is the linking element between the rim and the axle hub. Of all the measurements for wheel linking elements entre bore and bore diameter, bolt hole type and offset depth the latter is a partiularly important fator for the free movement of the tyre in any wheel position. (Offset depth = 0, when the rim entre and hub ontat area of the wheel dis are in line). 4. Wheel strength The wheel manufaturer must onfirm that the wheel strength is adequate for eah partiular appliation. 5. Lateral and true running of the wheels (without tyres) On ars whih are virtually all able to onsiderably exeed 100 km/h (62 mph), it is partiularly important that the wheels of the vehile are well-entred. There should be as little radial and lateral run-out as possible on both bead seat/flange sides of the rim, in order to ahieve good smooth running. The standard shows max. toleranes of 1.20 mm. This dimension is for the entre of the tyre seat area or the entre of the flange height. All measurements, partiularly the uniformity, should be well within these toleranes. *) Safety shoulders (e.g. hump) are presribed for tubeless radial ar tyres. They should also be used for tubeless truk C tyres with a 14, 15 or 16 ode for the rim diameter. Tehnial Databook Car Tyres

Operating instrutions SAFETY WARNING! The following instrutions must be observed to ensure vehile safety at all times. Disregarding the fitting instrutions ould endanger the safety of the tyre fitter or driver. This applies in partiular to inflation pressure. Non-ompliane with these! instrutions means risking tyre damage whih, if serious enough, may result in a tyre bursting. It is an hazard like this that an ause traffi aidents involving vehile damage and/or serious personal injury. Corret hoie of tyre and wheel Tyres an be properly maintained only if they are hosen in aordane with vehile douments and reommendations of the tyre manufaturer. The use of higher grade tyres ofthesamesize is permitted: Higher Speed Index, i.e. H instead of T. Greater load apaity, i.e. Index 82 instead of 80. Both fators may be ombined, i.e. greater load and speed. If tyres are hanged to a different size, all legal requirements and regulations, as well as the reommendations of the vehile, wheel and tyre manufaturers must be omplied with. In any event, the freedom of motion of the wheel and adequate load apaity of the tyre must be observed. In some ountries, tyre sizes and rims not entered in the vehile registration doument may only be fitted if the vehile and tyre manufaturer issue a ertifiate of non-objetion or if a publi authority issues fitting approval after an inspetion by an offiially authorised expert *). 80 and 82 series passenger ar tyres of the same size an be interhanged without new approval and without any new entry in the vehile douments if LI and SI of the interhanging size are of an equivalent or higher-grade quality. Example: 155/80 R13 79 T replaes 155 R13 79 T. Mixed tyre onstrutions for ars, aravans and other ar trailers are not permitted: Tyres fitted on any one vehile must all be either radial or ross-ply. (Exeption: Use of the spare tyre in an emergeny). The same applies to the hoie of wheels (rims): The standard wheels approved by the vehile manufaturer must be used as reommended. The tyre widths given in the tables on pages and refer to the measuring rim (bold print in the tables). In the event of a hange in therimwidthby+ 1 2 inh, the tyre width hanges by approx. +5 mm. Winter tyres Winter tyres are learly superior in the old months of the year; they offer a wider margin of safety and better eonomy when the temperature drops below 7 h C. Winter tyres approved for a max. speed lower than that of the vehile may only be fitted if the max. speed of these tyres is displayed in full view of the driver, e.g. on a learly visible stiker on the dashboard *). This maximum tyre speed must not be exeeded. A ombination of summer and winter tyres on passenger ars is not reommended. In most European ountries either summer or winter (M+S) tyres are speified for any one axle; in some ountries **) this applies to all four wheel positions. Winter tyres have to meet speial requirements, meaning that the legal minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm is inadequate. The suitability limit for winter use is a tread depth of 4 mm. In the interest of safety, Barum reommends replaing winter tyres before the tread depth drops below 4 mm for winter servie. Suh tyres an still be used in summer. Top safety in winter an be provided only by true winter tyres on all axle positions (4 tyres). Snowflake designation (in USA and Canada): This additional marking on an M+S tyre shows that the tyre meets presribed test riteria and ensures good winter properties. *) This does not apply to the UK. **) Exeption: In Austria, passenger ar winter tyres with less than 4 mm remaining tread depth are no longer legally onsidered to be winter tyres. 42 Operating instrutions Fitting the tyre SAFETY WARNING!! If a tyre is not properly fitted it may burst. The energy released in a blow-out an ause fatal injuries so tyres must be fitted by an expert. Only approved fitting tools and lubriants may be used. Observe all fitting instrutions. Before the old tyre is taken off the valve insert must be unsrewed and removed to ensure all air has esaped. The new tyre and rim must have mathing diameters and be approved as a ombination suitable for the vehile model onerned. Only rims of the orret size in perfet ondition and free of rust should be used. They must not be damaged, out of shape or worn. When fitting new tube-type tyres, always use new tubes. Astubesstrethinservie, thereisariskof folds forming in old tubes, so re-used tubes ould suddenly tear. For safety reasons, tubeless tyres should always be fitted with a new valve. If rubber valves (snap-in types) are used for tubeless tyres, the vehile manufaturer s instrutions must be omplied with in all ases. A valve support (i.e. a stopper on the rim itself or the hubap) should be fitted, if H, V, W, Y or ZR tyres are speified for the vehile. This ensures that valves are not fored off at high speeds. Always oat the tyre beads and the rim with a fitting lubriant reommended by the tyre manufaturer. Never use greases or other hydroarbons for this purpose. While the tyre is being inflated, the wheel must remain firmly seured on the mounting mahine. Never inflate an unseured tyre. Ifaloosetyre bursts, the wheel ould be thrown around, ausing damage. Keep a reasonable distane from any tyre that is being inflated. Make use of a suffiiently long and seured extension hose with an integrated pressure gauge. Never bend over a tyre while it is being inflated! When fitting tubeless ar tyres, are should be taken to ensure that the tyre beads oming from the well-base first lear the hump in the rim shoulder. To avoid raks in the bead ore, the pop pressure neessary should not exeed 3.3 bar. If the tyre does not pop into plae even at this pressure, the pressure must be lowered, and the ause identified and eliminated. Then the proedure an be repeated. Only when the tyre beads are seated orretly on the rim shoulder may the pressure be inreased to ahieve the required press-fit and firm grip on the rim flanges. However, this fitting pressure should not exeed the max. pressure given in the tables by more than 50 % or be more than 4.0 bar. After this, adjust the pressure to the operating pressure speified by the vehile manufaturer. Car tyres should be dynamially balaned to ahieve smooth running. Fitting the wheel to the vehile Vehile axle data suh as toe-in, amber angle and wheel astor as well as axle alignment must be heked and, if neessary, be adjusted to within toleranes. Only then should new tyres be fitted. When fitting a tyre, make sure that the wheel is entred on the axle hub. If neessary, re-balane the wheel eletronially one it is fitted on the vehile. Valves should be fitted with valve aps preferably with a sealing ring as they protet the deliate valve inserts and the inside of the tyre. When mounting wheel aps and wheel trim rings, suffiient learane to the tyre sidewall must be maintained. The wheel ap or wheel trim ring may not ome in ontat with the tyre under any operating onditions (e.g. brutal braking maneuvers, fast ornering). The diameter of the wheel ap and the wheel trim ring may not extend beyond the rim flange edge. This applies in partiular to tyres with rim protetion (flange rib). 42 Tehnial Databook Car Tyres

Operating instrutions Diretional tyres must be fitted so that they roll in the diretion of the arrow on the sidewall as the vehile moves forward. Exeption: For a short-term use as a temporary fitment spare; but revert to speified fitted position at the earliest possible opportunity! Modern asymmetrial tyres are frequently nondiretional. These tyres must be fitted with the sidewall Outside on the outside of the vehile so that their asymmetrial treads an be used to best effet. Tyre pressure SAFETY WARNING!! Inorret tyre pressure an lead to the inside of the tyre being damaged. This an result in tyre problems or even a blow-out. Hidden tyre problems are not retified by adjusting the tyre pressure. 44 Operating instrutions Table 2: apaities and tyre pressures Reinfored and Extra (XL) ar tyres apaity (kg) at tyre pressure (bar) Index The tyre must be inflated to the pressure speified by the vehile and tyre manufaturer. This varies depending on the load and servie onditions. The pressure always refers to the old tyre and must not be allowed to fall below this value. The pressure inside warm tyres driving auses heat build-up is naturally higher. So never redue the pressure of warm tyres. One they ool down, their pressure ould fall below the speified minimum tyre pressure. Tyre pressure must be heked and adjusted regularly every 14 days on the old tyre. Don t forget the spare! Inorret tyre pressure auses premature and/or uneven tread wear. Under-inflated tyres have a higher rolling resistane, and this means a higher fuel onsumption. The tyre pressure values for ar tyres given in table 1 and 2 are minimum pressures for speeds up to160km/h(100mph).theymaybeinreased, for example, for reasons of driving stability. 3.2 bar is the maximum tyre pressure on standard version ar tyres up to and inluding Speed Index T; 3.5 bar for H-, V-, W-, Y- and ZR-, as well as M + S and XL/Reinfored tyres. These values may not be exeeded to ensure that the strutural performane of the tyres and rims is not impaired. ZR tyres without operational ode have from 160km/h(100mph)to190km/h(118mph) inlusive the stated pressure of 2.5 bar. Then the inflation pressure must be inreased by 0.1 bar for eah 10 km/h (6 mph) up to 3.0 bar at 240 km/h (150 mph) under full load and maximum 2 h wheel amber. 44 Tehnial Databook Car Tyres

For ZR tyres without operational ode the maximum load apaity given in the tables from page 22 onwards applies to speeds up to 240 km/h (150 mph). For speeds over 240 km/h (150 mph) please refer to us for load apaity and tyre pressure. If ar tyres are to be used on a vehile with a wheel amber of over 2h, please hek load apaity and tyre pressure with us. In the absene of suh information, the following ETRTO reommendation an be used for tyres at speeds over 160 km/h (100 mph): f= 1 For a wheel amber exeeding 2h and up to and inluding 4h, the load apaity is to be redued linearly from 100% to 90%. Instead of a redution in tyre load apaity, inflation pressure may be inreased as a funtion of load. Thetyrepressurealulatedforthespeed onerned must be multiplied by the following orretion fator (f), irrespetive of the atual amber angle > 2h: x (allowane for the load apaity as a %) 1.25 The value of f for the following amber angles is shown below: Camber angle 2h 2.5h 3h 3.5h 4h f Tehnial Databook Car Tyres

Operating instrutions In general, the amber angle of vehiles should not exeed 4h. The load apaity of tyres in twin fitment is 1.85 times the load apaity of a single tyre. On vehiles with speeds in exess of 270 km/h (169 mph), the amber angle should not exeed 3h inluding any tolerane. The load apaities in the tables for ar tyres an be inreased if the tyres are fitted on vehiles with the following low type-related max. speeds if the inflation pressure is inreased at the same time (taken from the ETRTO Standards Manual). Max. speed apability (km/h) apaity (%) Inflation pressure inrease (bar) Tyre damage Most tyre damage is aused by inorret tyre pressure, so we reommend a regular tyre pressure hek every 2 weeks. When the ar has been driven and the tyres are warm, it is normal for the tyre pressure to inrease. Do not redue extra pressure aused by a heat build-up. A balaned, even style of driving is benefiial for the tyres and the environment. Harsh aeleration, braking with loked wheels and fast steering movements shorten the servie life of tyres. This applies equally to other types of tyre strain suh as severe suffing along the kerb, or driving over rough surfaes. This an ause hidden or visible damage to tyres. Sudden vibrations of the steering wheel ould point to tyre damage. All the vehile s tyres should be heked immediately for damage. Overstressing of tyres (exessive speed or overloading), is to be avoided. This has the same ritial effet as under-inflation and an ause heat damage to the tyre. Tyre Rotation on a vehile The tyres on a vehile should be rotated regularly to help ensure even wear and maximum tread life. Tyres should be rotated as instruted in the vehile owner s manual, with speial attention being given to the reommended interval for rotating tyres. Unless otherwise speified by the vehile manufaturer, tyres should be rotated every 10,000 to 12,000 kilometers or even earlier if the tread shows signs of uneven wear. In the latter ase, the vehile s wheel alignment and pertinent mehanial omponents should be heked and orreted, if need be. Full-size spare tyres (not temporary spares) of the samesizeanddesignasthetyresinuseonthe vehile should be inluded in the tyre rotation. In onjuntion with the rotation, the full-size spare tyre s inflation pressure should be heked and, if need be, orreted. A tyre s inflation pressure must orrespond to what is speified in the vehile owner s manual for the respetive tyre position (reommended inflation pressure may differ for the front- and rear-axle tyres). Tehnial Databook Car Tyres

Operating instrutions Tyre rotation may effet the tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). The vehile owner s manual or a qualified servie professional should be onsulted in the event that the TPMS has to be adjusted or realibrated. The rolling diretion of diretional tyres should not be reversed when the tyres are rotated. Mixing tyres should be avoided Tyre size, Index (LI) and Speed Index (SI) at all wheel positions should be in aordane with the vehile manufaturer s speifiation. In many ountries, this is a legal requirement. Driving with a non-reommended mix of tyre sizes, designs and Speed Indies an be dangerous. In the event that tyres of different sizes, designs, or Speed Index are to be fitted on a vehile, the vehile manufaturer s reommendations should be heeded and /or the advie of a qualified tyre speialist sought. Some vehiles leave the fatory with different tyre sizes on the front and rear axles. This onfiguration must not be hanged unless approved by the vehile manufaturer. No more than one temporary spare should be used on a vehile at any one time. A tyre of this kind should only be used at a ertain speed and for a ertain distane, as indiated on the tyre sidewall and /or on a label attahed to the tyre or the wheel. Mounting new tyres on the rear axle Itisreommendedthatalltyresusedonthevehile be replaed at the same time. If this is not the ase, at least all the tyres on the same axle should be replaed at the same time. If only one axle set of tyres is replaed, it is reommended to fit the newest tyres on the rear axle. This may ompliate tyre rotation and aution is advised if the tyres differ in terms of state of wear, size, design and Speed Index, for example. In this ase it is strongly reommended that a trained tyre speialist be onsulted. The point of the above mounting reommendation is to inrease tration on the rear axle. This is important in avoiding oversteer and loss of vehile stability on slippery surfaes. Additional important tips regarding tyre position The spare tyre s date of manufature and ondition (e.g. signs of raking, remaining tread depth) should be heked regularly. The spare tyre may have to be replaed. For 4-wheel drive and All Wheel drive vehiles, any speial tyre fitment requirements in the vehile owner s manual should be heeded espeially if the vehile is equipped with eletroni systems suh as antilok brakes, tration ontrol or stability ontrol. Damage to the vehile or its transmission an result if these requirements are not followed. Winter tyres should be fitted to all wheel positions. They should not be mixed with all-season or summer tyres. If winter tyres are, nonetheless, mounted on just one axle, this should be the rear axle. This inreases rear-axle tration and helps to avoid oversteer and loss of vehile stability on slippery roads. Tyre Storage Reommendations These reommendations are intended for onsumers, but they are also important for tyre dealers. For ommerial appliations of new and waste tyres (tyre dealers and fleets), there may be more stringent and legal restritions. Please hek loal regulations. Tyres are ompounded to resist normal deterioration aused e.g. by sunlight, humidity and ozone. Nevertheless, stored tyres should be proteted against these and other potentially damaging onditions. 48 Tehnial Databook Car Tyres

Operating instrutions The longer the storage period, the more exposure there is to potential damage. After dismounting from a vehile the tyres should be thoroughly leaned and inspeted for damage. Remove all stones and debris from the grooves. Chalk marking the tyres with their wheel positions (FL for Front Left, RR for Rear Right, et.) will help to find the orret positions aording the rotational plan. General: DO STORE TYRES where it is lean, dark, dry and moderately ventilated. Moist onditions should be avoided. Tyres destined for retreading/repairing should be thoroughly leaned and dried out before suh operations are performed. DO STORE TYRES at temperatures not exeeding 35h C (95F), preferable below 25h C(77F). Diret ontat with hot pipes and radiators must be avoided. Also deeply old temperatures, those well below the freezing point, might lead to brittleness and tyres should be arefully warmed up before use. DO STORE TYRES, if outdoors, proteted by an opaque waterproof overing, but avoid reating a heat box or steam bath. Ensure proper ventilation. DO STORE TYRES, if outdoors, where tyres are raised off the storage surfae. AVOID STORING TYRES on piers, ship deks, or other unproteted areas AVOID STORING TYRES, where they an be damaged by passing objets lawn mower, biyle, or garden tools. AVOID STORING TYRES where the area is wet, oily, and/or greasy suh as with gasoline or petroleum-based produts. Also, do not store on or against sensitive surfaes where staining an take plae. AVOID STORING TYRES in the proximity of hemial agents like solvents, fuels, oils, hydroarbons, paint, aids, disinfetants, et. AVOID STORING TYRES where subjet to extreme temperatures, diret sunlight or artifiial light with a high ultra-violet ontent. Room lighting with ordinary inandesent lamps is preferable to fluoresent tubes. Never store them near battery hargers, ovens, or open fires. AVOID STORING TYRES on blak asphalt or other heat absorbent surfaes and on highly refletive surfaes (i.e., sand or snow overed ground) AVOID STORING TYRES in the same area as an eletri motor or other ozone generating soure. If there is a question, hek ozone levels to be sure they do not exeed 0.08 ppm. Do not use tyres as a workbenh or tool stand. Soldering irons, power drill and tools an damage a tyre. Never put a burning igarette on a pile of tyres. Do not store other items on top of a tyre, espeially where staining of the surfae would be a onern. Loose tyres or tyres mounted on rims, but not installed on a vehile: DO STORE TYRES so that tyres retain their shape. Mounted tyres should preferable be inflated to only 100 kpa (15 psi /1 bar). Be sure to adjust the tyres to the reommended inflation pressure before mounting on the vehile. Tyresinstalledonavehilein long term storage: If possible, store the vehile on bloks to remove all weight from the tyres and over the tyres to protet them from environmental exposure. Tehnial Databook Car Tyres

Operating instrutions Tyres with rims Inflated Do not stand them upright hang them or pile them (restak every four weeks) Tyres without rims Do not pile them, or hang them stand them upright and rotate them every four weeks (on raks lear of floor) If the vehile annot be bloked up from the storage surfae, ompletely unload the vehile, so minimum weight will rest on the tyres. The storage surfae should be firm, reasonably level, well drained, and lean. In ases where the tyres will be supporting the vehile, it is permissible to inflate the tyres to the maximum pressure listed on the sidewall. Be sure to return the inflation pressure to reommended usage pressure before operating the vehile. In ases where the tyres will be supporting the vehile, it is reommended that the vehile be moved every month to minimize ozone raking in the bulge area and also to minimize a flat spot from developing. If the tyres do develop flat spots, this will usually disappear in a short period of servie. Before Returning Tyres (inluding full-size spares) to Servie Inspet tyres to be sure they are lean and free from foreign objets. Remove any water that has olleted in an unmounted tyre. When using a spare tyre, have it heked for proper inflation pressure and ondition suh as raking in the tread or sidewalls, weather heking, and other signs of prolonged storage by a full-servie tyre dealer, before plaing it in servie on the vehile. Full-Size Spare Tyres Full-sizespares,ofthesamesizeandtypeasthe road tyre, require speial maintenane onsiderations. The spare tyre position on the vehile is frequently not suitable for long term storage for full-size spare tyres that are not properly maintained /rotated as reommended. Tyres ontain speial ingredients suh as waxes, et. to protet the rubber. These speial tyre ingredients normally migrate throughout the tyre when in servie and protet the tyre against deterioration aused e.g. by sunlight, humidity and ozone. Therefore, full-size spares that are left for prolonged periods of time in the spare tyre position should be inspeted, properly inflated just like road tyres, and inluded in the regular tyre rotation. 50 Tehnial Databook Car Tyres

Operating instrutions Tyre repair! SAFETY WARNING! Serious injury or death may result from a tyre disablement that is aused by failing to observe the following safety and maintenane information. During its servie life, a tyre undergoes a variety of different usage onditions and an be damaged in many different ways. This damage an result from puntures, impats, uts, et. Tyre damage an redue a tyre s strutural integrity by, for example: Air loss resulting in underinflated servie onditions whih lead to internal strutural damage; Diret damage to tyre omponents suh as rubber and plies; Exposure of internal materials to the outside environment and resulting degradation; and/or Exposure of internal materials to pressurized air (Intra-arass pressurization). For these reasons, tyres should be regularly inspeted by the onsumer. An inspetion of the tyres should also be inorporated during routine vehile maintenane proedures. If tyre damage is suspeted or found, it should be arefully assessed by a trained speialist immediately. A onsumer should never repair a damaged tyre. Only a trained tyre speialist who an base his assessment on a thorough and omprehensive inspetion of the speifi tyre an determine whether an individual tyre is suitable for repair or should be removed from servie. This assessment should also take into aount the omplete servie life history of the tyre inluding inflation, load, operating onditions, et. If the tyre speialist deides to repair the tyre, then he should stritly follow all appropriate national tyre industry repair standards regarding the inspetion proess and repair proedures. Barum is not responsible for the speialist s deisions or the repaired tyre. Barum advises if a tyre is returned under omplaint and reason for the produt s disablement is in any way assoiated with a repair or the reason for repair the manufaturer s warranty is invalidated. It is forbidden by law to regroove ar tyres. Tyre servie life for passenger ar and light truk The tyre industry has long reognized the onsumers role in the regular are and maintenane of their tyres. The point at whih a tyre is replaed is a deision for whih the owner of the tyre is responsible. The tyre owner should onsider fators to inlude servie onditions, maintenane history, storage onditions, visual inspetions, and dynami performane. The onsumer should onsult a tyre servie professional with any questions about tyre servie life. The following information and reommendations are made to aid in assessing the point of maximum servie life. Tyres are designed and built to provide many thousands of miles of exellent servie. For maximum benefit, tyres must be maintained properly to avoid tyre damage and abuse that may result in tyre disablement. The servie life of a tyre is a umulative funtion of the storage, stowing, rotation and servie onditions, whih a tyre is subjeted to throughout its life (load, speed, inflation pressure, road hazard injury, et.). Sine servie onditions vary widely, aurately prediting the servie life of any speifi tyre in hronologial time is not possible. The onsumer plays an important role in tyre maintenane. Tyres should be removed from servie for numerous reasons, inluding tread worn down to minimum depth, damage or abuse (puntures, uts, impats, raks, bulges, underinflation, overloading, et). For these reasons tyres, inluding spares, must be inspeted routinely, i.e., at least one a Tehnial Databook Car Tyres

Operating instrutions month. Regular inspetion beomes partiularly important the longer a tyre is kept in servie. If tyre damage is suspeted or found, Barum reommends that the onsumer have the tyre inspeted by a tyre servie professional. Consumers should use this onsultation to determine if the tyres an ontinue in servie. It is reommended that spare tyres be inspeted at the same time. This routine inspetion should our whether or not the vehile is equipped with a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). Consumers are strongly enouraged to be aware of their tyres visual ondition. Also, they should be alert for any hange in dynami performane suh as inreased air loss, noise or vibration. Suh hanges ould be an indiator that one or more of the tyres should be immediately removed from servie to prevent a tyre disablement. Also, the onsumer should be the first to reognize a severe in-servie impat to a tyre and to ensure that the tyre is inspeted immediately thereafter. Tyre storage, stowage and rotation are also important to the servie life of the tyre. More information regarding proper storage, stowage and rotation is loated in other Barum publiations, whih are available upon request and through its websites. Tyre servie life reommendation Barum is unaware of any tehnial data that supports a speifi tyre age for removal from servie. However, as with other members of the tyre and automotive industries, Barum reommends that all tyres (inluding spare tyres) that were manufatured more than ten (10) years previous 1) be replaed with new tyres, even when tyres appear to be usable from their external appearane and if the tread depth may have not reahed the minimum wear out depth. Vehile manufaturers may reommend a different hronologial age at whih a tyre should be replaed based on their understanding of the speifi vehile appliation; Barum reommends that any suh instrution be followed. Consumers should note that most tyres would have to be removed for tread wear-out or other auses before any prosribed removal period. A stated removal period in no way redues the onsumer s responsibility to replae tyres as needed. Minimum removal tread depth for passenger and light truk tyres 1.6 mm is the most widely aepted minimum tread depth standard at whih tyres should be removed from servie. This standard has been adopted as a regulation by many of the world s national transportation authorities. As an indiation to the onsumer, there are tread wear indiator bars in the main grooves of the tyre that beome level with the tread surfae at approximately 1.6 mm of remaining tread. In addition to aknowledging the above, Barum reommends that all passenger and light truk tyres in highway motor vehile appliation be removed from servie at the following tread depths: summer/high performane tyres=3 mm winter tyres=4 mm These reommendations are based upon Barum s testing as well as real world experiene whih shows that drivers an maintain the performane potential (e.g. wet grip) of their tyres by replaing them before they reah the regulatory minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm. This applies espeially to winter tyres for whih winter driving properties suh as snow tration are signifiantly redued at tread depths below 4 mm. 1) Prodution ode of tyres seepage5. 52 Tehnial Databook Car Tyres

Guidelines on tyre safety for drivers and vehile operators (reommended for vehile handbooks). Tyres need to be properly handled if they are to keep you and other road users safe. So please note the following: 1. The tyre pressure must be as indiated in the operating instrutions for your vehile or as marked on the vehile itself. The pressure applies to old tyres; it must not be any lower. Tyres that have beome warm, e.g. through driving, will inrease in pressure. Never release air from warm tyres, or the pressure ould fall below the minimum. Thepressuremustbehekedevery 14 days when the tyres are old. Don t forget to hek the spare. If the pressure is too low, heat may build up in the tyre and lead to internal damage. At high speeds the tread may even ome off and thetyremayhaveablowout.tyre damage that annot be seen is not put right simply by raising the pressure afterwards! 2. Drive over kerbstones slowly and, if possible, at right angles. Don t drive up or against any steep or sharp-edged kerbstones or other objets (e.g. stones); this an lead to nonvisible tyre damage whih an ause problems later the tyre may fail when running at high speeds. 3. Chek tyres regularly for damage, suh as stones, nails et. that have penetrated the tyre, as well as any uts, tears or bulges (in the sidewall). Foreign objets an also damage the inside of the tyre. Let your tyre dealer or speialist hek to see if the tyre an be repaired. If a repair is not possible or doubtful, replae the tyre. Damaged tyres an burst. 4. Never fit used tyres whose life story you don t know. And remember that tyres age even when they are little used or not used at all. If your spare tyre remains unused for years, you should only use it in emergenies and drive arefully. 5. Chek the tread depth of your tyres regularly. The lower the depth, the greater the risk of aquaplaning. Ensure that your tyres omply with the legally required tread depth. Tehnial Databook Car Tyres
