3 1st cartoon: Cartoonist: Leslie Gilbert Illingworth Published:Daily Mail, 29 October 1962 (a British daily newspaper) 2 men are making an arm-wrestling sat on enormous H-bombs (hydrogen bombs) which are more destructive than the A-bomb. One of the two men is perspiring abundantly, he is probably aware that his opponent is ready to press on the switch of firing of his "seat". It is during the crisis of the rockets of Cuba in 1962, that this arm-wrestling takes place. Khrushchev tries to settle rockets threatening directly the American territory, on the island of Cuba, country managed by his ally Fidel Castro. JFK by the blockade of the island obliges the USSR to remove its missiles. Major crisis of the cold war with risk of one third world war, a nuclear war this time. Determination of JFK is shown here, K gives up what the text and facts confirm.

4 2nd cartoon: This Hurts Me More Than It Hurts You Cartoonist : Edmund Valtman Published in The Hartford Times, an Americandaily local newspaper, October 30, 1962; We can see a man who is extracting another man s teeth. The latter is wearing a military dress with a 5 ramification star as an insignia. He is telling him that he suffers more than him. This is Khrouchtchev who is withdrawing the missiles from Castro in Cuba. The catchphrase hints at / alludes to the fact that Castro felt betrayed by this withdrawal. In link with cartoon 1 for explanations. On october 30 th Khrushchev gave up and accepted to withdraw the missiles.

5 3 rd cartoon: Caricature, Punch, 1947 A character plants stakes in the shape of dollars to protect a territory, the Western Europe, in front of a disturbing space (dark forest, restless sky even threatening ). It is about Truman, the US president who applies his doctrine of the "containment",= prevent communism to extend, here in a Europe ravaged by the war, by offering to this one an economic assistance to bring it out of the "chaos" and thus avoid that it falls under communism with the influence of the USSR. It is about a reference to the Marshall plan (1947 is the Year of the beginning of the Marshall plan)

6 4 th cartoon dating of July, 1948 thus we are in the middle of a crisis of the blockade of Berlin, begun for 1 month: On the roofs of the city of Berlin, there is a armed "hunter" with a blunderbuss and we can see storks carrying bundles full of coal and food. The man = Stalin. Diversion of the symbol of the storks which usually bring babies, here it is the resupplying by American airlift for West Berlin surrounded by the Soviet army (blockade to get back West Berlin). Stalin is threatening but his weapon is too archaic to fire and risk a war with the US who have the atomic weapon, not him. Outcome: Stalin has to give up, but Germany is divided into 2 States separated between 2 blocks, Berlin is also shared, until 1989 (fall of the wall built in 1961 to prevent the East Germans to flee the East
