2 Course Description/Rationale This course draws on a variety of themes to promote extensive development of reading and writing skills and to reinforce oral communication skills. Students will gain a greater understanding of French-speaking cultures in Canada and around the world through their readings of a variety of materials, including a short novel or a play. Students will produce various written assignments, including a formal essay. The use of correct grammar and appropriate language conventions in both spoken and written French will be emphasized throughout the course. Unit 1 Holidays and Special occasions Students will be able to exchange information about festivals and special occasions and will gain some understanding of significant festivals in French-speaking countries. They listen to or read the accounts of young people describing a variety of different festivals (Christmas, Diwali, Halloween ) and carry out different gap fill/comprehension tasks. They then choose a festival that is significant to them and write a description of it. They are also asked to prepare invitations to a special occasion. Students read descriptions of birthday celebrations and then write a description of their favorite birthday ever or their worst birthday ever. Unit 2 - L'amitié Le Petit Prince This unit explores friendship. Students will read and listen to different examples of friendship throughout the unit. The major activities include a written monologue that expresses emotions, reflections, and decisions. The monologue will then be performed orally. They will also read «Le Petit Prince». And together we will look at how the novel treats the theme of friendship. Unit 3 - Bien dans sa peau Students look at what it means to be healthy. They explore ways of maintaining health and well-being of the body and mind. Students analyze how healthy is portrayed in the media and express their views on different diets and beauty obsessions. As a final task, students research a health problem teenagers might be dealing with and present possible solutions or remedies to the problem. Language Structures:Use of subjonctif present of high frequency verbs (avoir, etre, aller, faire, savoir) with the impersonal expression (il faut), affirmative and negative infinitives following impersonal expressions (Il est important de se protéger contre les rayons du soleil.). Unit 4 - La publicité et le marketing - 2 -

3 This unit focuses on the techniques used in advertising and marketing. Students will create and present an ad campaign in the target language, and will also write an argumentative dialogue exploring a key issue in advertising and marketing. Language structure: Negation and Interrogative - 3 -

4 Overall Curriculum Expectations By the end of the course, students will be able to: listen and respond to a variety of spoken texts; listen and respond to a variety of non-structured media works; express ideas and opinions in conversations and teacher-guided discussions; make oral presentations on a variety of topics; use appropriate language conventions during oral communication activities read and demonstrate an understanding of a variety of texts and simple authentic materials; apply critical thinking as they read (e.g. infer meaning from the text, analyse information, determine cause and effect, and go beyond the surface meaning); identify and understand language conventions used in their reading materials. express ideas and opinions in short written texts; create short written texts in structured and open-ended situations; identify and use appropriate language conventions in their written work

7 Program Planning Differentiated Instruction: Teachers will differentiate the strategies and tools used to assess students progress towards their learning goals in a way that enables each student to demonstrate his or her learning. Content will be differentiated so that achievable learning goals are identified for each student. Process will be differentiated so that a variety of instructional and management strategies engage all modalities. Similarly, achievement data will be gathered through various assessment tools in order to ensure that products are differentiated. Education for Exceptional Students: A Student Success Plan (SSP) will be maintained for each student who is identified. The SSP outlines, as appropriate, any modified or alternative curriculum expectations and any accommodations (i.e., the specialized support and services) that are required to meet the student s needs. The SSP also identifies the methods by which the student s progress will be reviewed. The Role of Technology in the Curriculum: This course is rich in media sources. Students will make use of the Internet by exploring a variety of different French websites. During this French course, the students will have the opportunity to complete language labs online. Also PowerPoint presentations will be used on a regular basis. English Language Learners: This course is based on communicating effectively in French. The course itself requires a rich source of visuals and gestures, and as such does not rely heavily on knowledge of the English language. This is a course that can be adapted easily for all learners without losing the challenge of the assignments given. Career Education: The course will highlight the benefits of speaking French, including benefits in the workplace. A course that is based on communication can be productive for many different careers
