This unit is internally assessed by centre staff (eg teachers, trainers, support workers, carers, assessors) and externally moderated by OCR. Units are graded Pass or Fail. 5 Submitting the claim and candidate work All candidates work must be assessed and complete before being submitted to the OCR examiner-moderator. Only work that meets all of the assessment criteria should be submitted for moderation. Once the assessment is complete, you need to make a claim for certification and submit work to the OCR examiner-moderator: Certification claims are made online via Interchange. For information and guidance on how to build an online claim please refer to the OCR Admin Guide and the Step-by-step guides (which is at: As soon as you have submitted your claim online, you need to send the candidates work (for all of the candidates for whom you have made a claim) to your OCR examiner-moderator. You will already have received contact details for your OCR examiner-moderator when you registered your candidates. Failure to submit an online claim will result in your examiner-moderator being unable to moderate the work. What needs to be submitted to the OCR examiner-moderator? You should complete and send the following to the OCR Examiner-moderator: For each candidate, you will need to submit: A completed Assessor s Observation Record (the form is contained in this document) and any supporting notes For each claim you make (which may include a number of candidates), you will need to submit: An Assessment Front Sheet (contained in this document and available at: How much evidence needs to be submitted? If you are sending notes to support a candidate s work these must be clearly referenced to the unit and the candidate. It is expected that only final versions of supporting notes are sent to the OCR Examiner-moderator. Supporting notes can include feedback that was given to the candidate as part of their summative assessment. Where feedback is included, it must be in relation to summative assessment only. The purpose for including feedback in the supporting notes is to indicate to the OCR examinermoderator how the candidate met the assessment criteria. This can be overall feedback as appropriate or can be focussed on particular criteria. OCR Level 2 Speak to communicate information, ideas and opinions 5
The assessment recording documentation within this guide can be printed. Word versions of the recording documentation are also available at: Important: We cannot return candidates work, so before submitting candidate evidence to the OCR examiner-moderator, please ensure that you copy all paperwork for your own reference. 6 OCR Level 2 Speak to communicate information, ideas and opinions
1.1 Assessing the Level 2 Speak to communicate information, ideas and opinions unit Preparing for Assessment The following assessment will need to be conducted under the conditions described in the OCR Cambridge Award/Certificate in English Centre Handbook. Assessors may select the topic (context/subject) of the assessment as appropriate to the candidate. Candidates are allowed to prepare for their assessment by researching the topic so that they can actively participate in the assessment. It is recommended that this is carried out in class time so that all learners have the same opportunity for preparation. Preparation notes and/or scripts must not be used during the assessment. Centres must take care to select a topic that is appropriate to the candidate s level of ability and does not create any accessibility barriers. Topics can be those relating to other subject areas, where delivery of the teaching for this unit is embedded in other subject teaching programmes. Evidence of summative assessment must be produced for each candidate, even where more than one candidate is being assessed on their contributions to the same assessment task. The OCR Assessor s Observation Forms are intended for the summative (final) assessment of a candidate but assessors can use them during formative assessment to help when giving feedback to the candidate. Records of formative assessment must not be sent to the OCR examinermoderator. Incorrectly completed Assessor s Observation Records may cause claims to be withdrawn by the OCR examiner-moderator. Please ensure that all observation records are completed clearly so that there is no ambiguity in the decision of the centre assessor. Recording assessment decisions When completing the Assessor s Observation Record, centres must not merely repeat the wording of the assessment criteria but clearly say how the candidate has met the criteria. For example, the comment,...made relevant contributions to the activity is unhelpful, because it does not identify how the contribution was relevant. Centre assessors should fully support their assessment decisions with notes that describe candidate activity, observations and responses. These should be submitted to the OCR examinermoderator, so that the centre assessment decision can be agreed and the claim verified. There is no requirement for video or audio recordings of any centre- assessed evidence for the moderated Cambridge Award/Certificate in English qualifications. OCR Level 2 Speak to communicate information, ideas and opinions 7
Group size and composition The size and composition of groups acceptable for this assessment are highlighted in the Tutor Guidance section of the assessment task. Centres must ensure that all candidates participating in the assessment task are able to contribute effectively without disadvantaging others. Timings of the assessment The length of time for the unit assessment is given in the task. Where the timing of the assessment is less than the prescribed time, it is up to the centre assessor to judge if the candidate has met the required standard within the time. If the centre assessor is unhappy with the evidence presented during the allocated time of the assessment, they should consider if the candidate can demonstrate competence for the unit at this level. 8 OCR Level 2 Speak to communicate information, ideas and opinions
Assessment task Centre assessor guidance for the assessment task Please read these instructions carefully before beginning the assessment task. You should print the Learner Guidance sheet for the candidate, or read the instructions to the candidate, so that they are clear about what they need to do for the assessment task. The assessment task requires candidates to confidently speak, to demonstrate that they can adapt and structure their delivery to the needs of the audience and situation. The candidate will need to use technical vocabulary and syntax to deliver complex meanings, ensuring that this is then explained at a level the audience can understand and engage with. The candidate will need to respond effectively to questions and interruptions, whilst still maintaining the thread of the delivery. The context in this assessment task is accidents at home. It can be changed to suit the candidate. Where the context is changed, the centre assessor must ensure that the candidate still has opportunity to meet the assessment criteria during the assessment. If you want to change the context we strongly recommend that you change only the text that has been underlined in the task. The remaining instructions for the candidate relate to the competence they are expected to demonstrate to meet the assessment criteria. In order to ensure that the assessor can concentrate on observing and assessing the candidate, it is recommended that the assessor does not participate in the assessment. Where additional input may be required to meet the assessment criteria, the centre assessor may have questions related to the assessment to put to the candidate. These must be asked after the assessment activity has taken place. It may be necessary for the assessor to prompt the candidate to make sufficient contribution in order to be assessed. Prompts should only be used where absolutely necessary. Candidates are not allowed to use notes or scripts during the assessment. The assessment should take no more than 20 minutes in total. The candidate will be expected to deliver sustained speaking on their own to an appropriate audience, so that the assessment is individual to the candidate. Assessment of group delivery (ie assessment of more than one person delivering to the same group at the same time) is not allowed. OCR Level 2 Speak to communicate information, ideas and opinions 9
Learner guidance for the assessment task For this assessment, you will tell someone about accidents at home. You need to: Make sure that you have researched information about accidents at home fully, before you start tell your audience about accidents in the home, using examples, fact and descriptions to help structure your speaking make sure that you keep your audience interested by using detail that they will understand make sure that you have enough information and detail to talk for up to 20 minutes about accidents in the home tell your audience about the types of injury that result from accidents in the home, using correct technical medical terms where appropriate be prepared to answer questions. Remember to: Speak clearly and confidently so that your audience can hear and understand you Structure your delivery, so that it is logical Include as much detail as possible (for example, use statistics on the types of accident, accident occurrences across the world, impact on hospitals etc) Talk about complex detail in a way that your audience can understand Use specialist and technical words to that relate to accidents, making sure that you explain their meaning to the listener Respond to questions about accidents in the home while making sure that you return to the purpose of your delivery. 10 OCR Level 2 Speak to communicate information, ideas and opinions
