4 1. Introduction Congratulations on your purchase of the RoboReel Power Cord System. With this decision, you have shown that high quality, engineering excellence, exciting design, and exceptional functionality are important to you, and that you understand the value of a product which possesses these attributes. Enjoy all the time and reduced stress that our product will provide you for many years. Please let us know if there are ways you feel we can improve our product. It was designed with your needs in mind, and we want to continually improve it to be even more functional. Our goal is to make your life a little easier. Carefully read all instructions before operating the unit for the first time and save for future reference. Keep your power cord system box for at least 30 days. If you need to return the power cord system for any reason, you will need the box and internal packing pieces for shipping. 2. 5 3. Important Safety Information WARNING: The power cord system is designed for use in North America with 120V 60Hz AC only. Use with any other power or voltage will result in damage to the unit and may cause personal injury or death. WARNING: Beware of electrical shock hazards. Do not operate the power cord system near water or in wet areas. Do not connect or disconnect any electronic devices or utilize the cord reel during an electrical storm. CAUTION: The power cord system is for dry, indoor use only. CAUTION: Do not use the power cord system if there is any damage to the power cord or the power entry cable. CAUTION: Never use the power cord system near a heat-generating device, such as a space heater. WARNING: If the unit is mounted, the unit must be installed into a structure which can support the weight of the unit. Mounting the unit into structures unable to support the weight may cause injury or death. CAUTION: The portable power cord system can be bench-mounted or wall-mounted. It is not designed to be mounted on a ceiling or hung from any other horizontal surface. CAUTION: When mounting the power cord system on a wall (optional wall mount), make sure the three center holes of the wall mount bracket are aligned with a stud in the wall. WARNING: Do not attempt to move or lift the power cord system when in operation. Doing so may cause personal injury or damage to the cord reel. WARNING: Supplying power to the receptacle ball using the retract/power button may turn on electrical devices plugged into the power cord system. Any electrical device that does not contain a separate ON/OFF switch, or devices which are switched to the ON position, could automatically power on and cause personal injury or damage. Inadvertently powering on heating devices, such as soldering or heating irons, could result in a fire. Always use caution when turning on the power. CAUTION: Overriding the strain relief can cause the extension cord to detach from the power cord system. Using excessive force which causes the extension cord to detach voids the warranty. WARNING: If the top hemisphere becomes detached at any time, immediately unplug the power entry cable from the outlet. Do not touch any internal part of the unit. Failure to discontinue power may cause injury or death. CAUTION: Never use the power cord system if the receptacle ball is cracked or broken. WARNING: When overheated, the cord is very hot. Do not touch the cord directly. Extract it using a glove or other thermal protection. WARNING: Unplug the power entry cable from the outlet before attempting to replace or maintain the power cord. Failure to discontinue power may cause injury or death. All electrical appliances care some risk of injury. No product eliminates all possible risk. However, ROBOREEL reduces the risk significantly. 5

6 CAUTION: Do not rotate the internal hub with the power cord removed. This will change the internal timing and may cause the unit to retract incorrectly. CAUTION: Never remove the top hemisphere of the power cord system. It is not designed to be removed. CAUTION: Do not insert objects into the power cord system, as they may touch dangerous voltage points or cause shorts. Always disconnect the power cord system from the power source before attempting to remove a foreign object. CAUTION: Do not attempt to service the power cord system or any components for which GSI has not provided servicing instructions. CAUTION: Keep the power cord system free of excess dirt and dust. In case of excess surface dirt, never apply cleaner directly to the surface of the power cord system. Always apply it to a cloth first, and then wipe the cord system surface. 4. Using the Power Cord System Figure 2 WARNING: The power cord system is designed for use in North America with 120V 60Hz AC only. Use with any other power or voltage will result in damage to the unit and may cause personal injury or death Make sure the power entry cable is plugged completely and securely into the back of the power cord system. Pull the power entry cable and plug through the leg assembly above the bottom leg (see Figure 2), then plug into a standard three prong outlet. 2. The power cord system will emit a tune indicating the unit is ready for use. a. Once the power cord system has surpassed the number of winds in the warranty, a different tune will be emitted. 3. Extract the power cord to the preferred location. a. When fully extended a small amount of the power cord will remain inside power cord system and at this point the unit restricts extraction. This is done as strain relief to protect power cord becoming detached from the system. b. The last amount of power cord can be extracted by using slightly more force. Use extreme caution. This is NOT RECOMMENDED as it could cause the power cord to detach from the power cord system.

7 CAUTION: Overriding the strain relief can cause the power cord to detach from the cord system. Using excessive force which causes the power cord to detach voids the warranty. 4. Hold the retract/power button (see Figure 3) on the receptacle ball for one second to supply power. The orange LEDs on the receptacle ball indicate when power is supplied to the cord. Figure 3 WARNING: Supplying power to the receptacle ball using the retract/power button may turn on electrical devices plugged into the cord system. Any electrical device that does not contain a separate ON/OFF switch, or devices which are switched to the ON position, could automatically power on and cause personal injury or damage. Plug your electronic device(s) into the receptacle ball. 6. When you are finished using the power cord, unplug the electronic device(s) from the receptacle ball. 7. If power is being supplied to the receptacle ball (LEDs will be illuminated), press either the retract button on the top of the cord system once or the retract/power button on the receptacle ball once to shut off power (LEDs will no longer be illuminated). 8. To retract the cord, press either the dome retract button on top of the power cord system, or the retract/powerbbutton on the receptacle ball again. To avoid whipping, the cord slows to docking speed just before retraction is complete. If the cord is restrained in any way, retraction stops. 9. Pushing either the dome retract button on the top of the power cord system or the retract/power button on the receptacle ball during retraction will stop retraction. NOTE: The power cord will not retract while power is being supplied to the receptacle ball. NOTE: If the power cord has been extracted while the power cord system was not plugged into an outlet, the initial retraction may be slow for most or all of the retraction. The next time the retraction is initiated, the power cord will retract at the normal speeds. 7

8 5. Thermal Protection To protect against overheating, the power cord system is equipped with a thermal protection feature that turns off power to the power cord until the power cord system returns to a safe, operational temperature internally. Two high/low audible beeps indicate when the power cord system has attained its maximum, safe temperature and that the power cord system is temporarily unusable. When the power cord system is in this condition the power is shut off to the receptacle ball and the cord will not retract. This sound will continue until the power cord system has cooled to temperatures that are safe for operation. If the power shuts off due to heat, completely extract the power cord and do not coil it. Wait for the unit to cool before resuming use. WARNING: When overheated, the cord is very hot. Protect your hands when extracting the power cord. Do not touch the power cord directly. 6. Over Current Protection The power entry cable is equipped with a circuit breaker, which enables a 15A current to flow uninterrupted. Figure 4 If the current exceeds 15A, the circuit breaker will activate. To reset the circuit, push the circuit breaker button on the power entry cable. 8

9 7. Mounting the Power Cord System The portable version of the power cord system may be used freestanding, however, it can also be mounted on a bench or wall. The included bench mount bracket may be used to prevent the unit from being accidently pulled off of a bench, or other elevated surface. The bench mount bracket should not be used to mount the unit to a wall or other vertical surface. In order to mount the portable power cord system on a wall or other vertical surface, an optional wall mount must be purchased. The portable version of the power cord system should not be mounted on a ceiling or hung from any other horizontal surface. WARNING: If the unit is mounted, the unit must be installed into a structure which can support the weight of the unit. Mounting the unit into structures unable to support the weight may cause injury or death. CAUTION: When mounting the power cord system on a wall, make sure the three center holes of the wall mount bracket are aligned with a stud in the wall. 7.1 Bench Mount A bench mount is included with your power cord system and may be useful when using your power cord system on a work bench. The bench mount will ensure the power cord system is not inadvertently pulled off the bench. CAUTION: Do not use the bench mount to mount the power cord system to a wall or to hang it from a ceiling. The bench mount is intended for the top of flat surfaces only. To bench mount the power cord system: 1. Locate an area where an outlet is within reach of the power entry cable. 2. Using the included bench mount bracket and screws, install the bench mount on a flat, horizontal surface that can support the weight of the cord reel. 3. Insert the lower back part of the legs into the mount and gently pull forward (see Figure 5 and Figure 6). 4. Plug the power entry cable into an outlet. Figure 5 9

To remove the power cord system from the bench mount, gently push the legs from the front to disengage from the mount. 7.2 Wall Mount You may want to mount your power cord system on a wall for convenience, accessibility and to save space. An optional wall mount may be purchased online at or by calling GR8-STUF ( ). CAUTION: When mounting the power cord system on a wall, make sure the three center holes of the wall mount bracket align with a stud in the wall. Do not attempt to mount the portable power cord system on a ceiling. To wall mount the power cord system: 1. Locate an area where an outlet is within reach of the power entry cable. 2. Install the wall mount on a flat, vertical surface. Ensure that the three center holes align with a stud in the wall and use screws with washers to attach the mount to the wall. Use screws with washers, and dry wall anchors in the mounting holes near the edges of the wall mount. 3. Before mounting the power cord system, vertically rotate the cord system sphere so the cord opening is facing straight up (see Figure 7). 4. Insert the lower, back part of the legs into the upper brackets on the mount (see Figure 7). 10

Ensure that the power cord sytem opening is facing straight out (as shown in Figure 8) and not downward. Otherwise, wind quality will deteriorate. Figure 8 6. Plug the power entry cable into an outlet. 7. To remove the power cord system, reverse steps 4 through 6. Locks may be installed on the mounting bracket to help safeguard the power cord system. 11

12 8. Setting the Location of Docking Speed Initiation Your power cord system is designed to wind in fast and slow down during the last few feet to docking speed before coming to a stop at the opening of the power cord system sphere. You may wish to change the location where docking speed initiates. This may be useful in applications where the power cord system has been mounted on a bench or wall and the default location for docking speed initiation does not slow the cord quickly enough to prevent the ball end from impacting cabinets or walls. To change the location where docking speed is initiated: 1. Mount the power cord system in the desired location. 2. Ensure the power cord system is plugged into an outlet. 3. Make sure the cord is fully retracted. 4. Extend the cord until the receptacle ball is laying flat on the floor or ground. 5. Press and hold the Retract/Power button on the receptacle ball until the LED lights illuminate (approximately 1 second). 6. Release the Retract/Power button. 7. Press and hold the Retract/Power button on the receptacle ball until the LED lights flash twice (approximately 5 seconds). 8. Release the Retract/Power button. Programming is now complete. 9. Press the Retract/Power button on the receptacle ball to turn off the LEDs (approximately 1 second). 10. Press the Retract/Power button on the receptacle ball and fully retract the cord. 11. Fully extract the cord. 12. Press and release the Retract/Power button to fully retract the cord. Determine if the new docking speed initiation point allows the cord to slow sufficiently, preventing the ball end from impacting cabinets or walls. 13. If not, repeat steps 4 through 12, initiating the programming of the unit further away from the cord system, until an appropriate location is determined. 12

13 9. Clearing Programmed Data If the cord becomes difficult to extract because strain relief is coming on too early or if the power cord system unit exhibits any odd behavior while winding in, the power cord system counter may be incorrect. In order to fix this the power cord system can be reset in either of the following ways: To reset the unit using the dome retract button: 1. Ensure that the motor and power are turned off (LED lights off). 2. Hold down the dome retract button for 5 seconds. 3. A tune will play indicating that the system counter has been reset. 4. If the cord is fully retracted during the three steps above then the unit is ready for use. If the cord is extracted during this process, the next retraction must go all the way home to set the new values correctly. To reset the unit using the retract/power button on the receptacle ball: 1. Ensure that the motor and power are turned off (LED lights off). 2. Hold down the retract/power button on the receptacle ball for 5 seconds. 3. The power will turn on after 1 second and then turn off again at 5 seconds. This indicates that the system counter has been reset. 4. If the cord is fully retracted during the three steps above then the unit is ready for use. If the cord is extracted during this process, the next retraction must go all the way home to set the values correctly. Functionality to clear the programmed data (docking point, ball stop location, etc.) is also included in the cord system software. To clear the programmed data: 1. Unplug the cord system from outlet. 2. Hold the dome retract button down. 3. Plug the power cord system into outlet while continuing to hold down the dome retract button. 4. Continue holding the top base button until tune is heard (5 seconds). Note: This does not clear the system count of the unit. 10. Maintenance and Cleaning CAUTION: Never remove the top hemisphere of the power cord system. WARNING: Do not pour water directly onto the unit. Beware of electrical shock hazards. Do not operate the power cord system near water or in wet areas. CAUTION: Never apply cleaner directly to the surface of the power cord system. Always apply it to a cloth first, and then wipe the power cord system surface. If the power cord system requires cleaning due to scuffing or excess dirt, it may be surface cleaned. To clean the power cord system: 1. Unplug the power cord system. 2. Using a gentle household cleaner (not water) applied to a cloth; wipe the surface of the power cord system. 3. Use compressed air to remove dirt or debris from the inside of the cord system. 13

14 11. Replacing the Power Cord WARNING: Unplug the power entry cable from the outlet before attempting to remove the extension cord from the power cord system. Failure to discontinue power can cause injury or death. WARNING: The top of the hemisphere is not designed to be removed. Replacement of the power cord may only be done through the opening in the front of the unit. CAUTION: Do not rotate the internal hub with the power cord removed. This will change the internal timing and may cause the unit to retract incorrectly. If the power cord and/or receptacle ball sustain damage and are no longer safe for use, a replacement power cord (receptacle ball included) may be ordered online at or by calling GR8-STUF ( ). To replace the power cord: 1. Unplug the power entry cable from the outlet. 2. Extract the power cord completely. 3. Slightly rotate the reel forward to access the 3 captive screws (see Figure 9). 4. If necessary, an additional screwdriver can be utilized to keep the spool from rotating. NOTE: Since the top of the hemisphere must never be removed, shining a flashlight or lamp into the power cord system opening is helpful during this procedure. 5. Remove the damaged cord by loosening the 3 captive screws that attach it to the reel under the top hemisphere (see Figure 9). a. It is recommended that you use a Phillips-head #1 screwdriver for the top screw (number one in Figure 9) and a Phillips-head #2 screwdriver for the bottom two screws (number two and three in Figure 9). 15 CAUTION: Do not rotate the internal hub with the power cord removed. Over-rotating the reel at this point will change the internal timing of the unit and cause the power cord to wind incorrectly. 6. Insert the new cord, aligning the prongs to the hub (see Figure 10). 7. Push about 3 inches of the cord down into the hemisphere, so the attachment piece lies flush with the spool and the prongs and screws align. Leaving the full cord outside the hemisphere makes the pieces difficult to align (see Figures 10 and 11). 16 9. Tighten the captive screws to the hub (see Figure 12). Figure Plug the power entry cable into an outlet. 11. Retract the cord. Note: Hold the cord lightly against the right side of the opening in the upper hemisphere during the first 2-3 winds around the spool. The cord will retract slowly during the initial retration after replacement. 12. Replacing the Wear Ring WARNING: Unplug the power entry cable from the outlet before attempting to replace the wear ring on the unit. Failure to discontinue power can cause injury or death. The receptacle ball on your power cord system unit comes attached with a wear ring, which helps prevent damage and abrasion of the receptacle ball. Additional wear rings can be purchased online at or by calling GR8-STUF ( ). To replace the wear ring: 1. Use a Phillips-head #1 screwdriver to remove the two screws that attach the two sides of the wear ring. 2. Take the old wear ring off of the receptacle ball and discard it. 3. Attach the new wear ring in the same position that the old wear ring was located using the provided screws. a. Use a Phillips-head #1 to securely attach the new wear ring to the receptacle ball. 16

If your RoboReel Power Cord System fails to operate properly at any point before the earlier of (a) 4 years from your date of purchase of the product, or (b) 4000 winds of the product (a wind being defined as each time that a retract button on the unit or on the receptacle ball is engaged), once the defective product is returned to Great Stuff, Great Stuff will (at Great Stuff s sole discretion) either (1) repair the product at no charge, using new parts or parts equivalent to new in performance and reliability, (2) exchange the product with a product that is new or equivalent to new in performance and reliability and is at least functionally equivalent to the original product. EXCLUSIONS AND LIMITATIONS This Limited Warranty applies only to the RoboReel Power Cord System. This Limited Warranty does not apply to any other product, even if packaged or sold with the RoboReel Power Cord System. Manufacturers or suppliers, other than Great Stuff, may provide their own warranties to the consumer purchaser, but Great Stuff, in so far as permitted by law, provides the RoboReel Power Cord System as is. This Limited Warranty may be void if any of the following occur: 1. The RoboReel Power Cord System is no longer owned by the original purchaser; 2. The RoboReel Power Cord System has been tampered with beyond the requirements of regular maintenance; 3. Parts other than those sold through Great Stuff have been integrated into the RoboReel Power Cord System; or 4. The RoboReel Power Cord System has been modified in any way. Furthermore, this Limited Warranty shall not apply to (a) cosmetic damage, including but not limited to scratches, dents, and broken plastic caused by abuse or misuse by the user; (b) damage caused by accident (including dropping), abuse, misuse, liquid spill or submersion, flood, fire, earthquake or other external causes; (c) damage caused by operating the product outside the permitted or intended uses described by Great Stuff (such as dropping, throwing, abuse or misuse by the user); or (d) damage caused by service performed by anyone who is not an authorized representative of Great Stuff. TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THIS LIMITED WARRANTY AND THE REMEDIES SET FORTH ABOVE ARE EXCLUSIVE AND IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, REMEDIES AND CONDITIONS, WHETHER ORAL OR WRITTEN, STATUTORY, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED.
