Bursary brochure is available on request. Write to the contact address below. APPLICATION CHECK LIST PLEASE TICK OFF (3) THE APPROPRIATE BLOCKS A certified copy of your identity document. A certified copy of matric results (first year students only). A certified copy of your academic results if you studied at another institution. Certified copies of parents /guardians Identity Document and siblings birth certificates/identity Document. A recent pay slip (not older than three months) of your parents/guardian, e.g. grandparent, aunt, etc. A certified audited copy of the most recent balance sheet / most recent certified financial statements-if owners of a business, three months bank statements for company and both parents). An affidavit from parent/guardian, e.g. grandparent, aunt, etc. regarding income if income is derived from informal trading. If parents are unemployed a UIF card together with an affidavit and a report from a social worker or religious leader. Letter of retrenchment from employer. A recent tax assessment if not employed and income is derived from interest on capital. An affidavit from your mother if she is a housewife/unemployed. If living with a guardian (e.g. grandparent, aunt, etc), a proof of guardian s income, i.e. pension slip, child support grant, etc.note: An affidavit should accompany the documents to confirm the whereabouts of parents. A report of family status by a social worker or religious leader. If any of your parents are deceased we need: (a) A certified copy of their marriage certificate and (b) Certified copy of death certificate(s) should one or both of them be deceased. A certified copy of divorce decree and annexures (if parents are divorced) and amount of maintenance received. An affidavit from your mother/father/guardian to explain the whereabouts of any parent not living at your home, and the amount that your absent parent contributes towards your care. A report of family status by a social worker or religious leader. Siblings older than 21 must provide a proof of income or if unemployed an affidavit confirming umemployment. If the student is self-supportive, student to provide a recent payslip. A recent tax assessment if not employed and income is derived from interest on capital. Or a UIF card together with an affidavit and a report from a social worker or religious leader. If applicable, a letter of retrenchment from employer. Proof of registration for any brothers/sisters who are at tertiary institutions. Recent retrenchments of parents/guardian (within last two year: (a) Provide proof of lump sum payout and monthly pension. (b) Provide documentation to show how much of this has been invested. Please be reminded that the certification of all supporting documents must not be more than three months old. ALSO CHECK THAN THE FOLLOWING: Have you signed the declaration on the last page of the financial aid application? If you are under 16 years that your parents/guardian have also signed the declaration. Please ensure that your application is returned before the closing date (shown above). NOTE LATE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED. Your application will only be finalised once all your supporting documents have been received. Incomplete forms will not be accepted. Please note that we do not accept faxed or scanned documents. 2 Information pages to be retained by the student bursary merit awards financial need academic abilities eligibility DEFINITIONS A grant of money that is offered in aid of financially needy and deserving students. Candidates are usually chosen on the basis of financial need and satisfactory academic performance. Financial aid or other assistance, where a specific faculty or department nominates a student, usually on the grounds of his or her outstanding academic performance. The calculated financial need of the applicant. It is the most important criterion for granting financial aid. The financial need of the applicant is determined via a means test. The following are taken into consideration: i) Gross family income ii) Net value of assets iii) Number of dependents Satisfactory academic performance is a prerequisite for the granting of all financial aid. An applicant must comply with the minimum requirements as specified by the donor. Donors usually ask for the latest progress reports on academic performance and results. In terms of the requirements (criteria) set by the donor, with which the student must comply in order to qualify for that specific grant. GENERAL 1 You may apply for financial assistance once you have registered as a full-time student of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. 2 Financial assistance is available to students who satisfy the requirements of the financial aid policy, namely: a) Financial need b) Acceptable academic performance. 3 The awarding of financial assistance is subject to your being registered at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology for a recognised course check with your department whether your course is a formal Cape Peninsula University of Technology course. 4 Only South African citizens are eligible for financial assistance. MAXIMUM AMOUNT AWARDED The financial aid package offered by the Cape Peninsula University of Technology will in some cases be a percentage of your study costs. Any outstanding balance will have to be paid by yourself, your parent(s) or guardian(s). You are advised to make payment arrangements well in advance of payment due dates to avoid facing payment difficulties. RENEWAL OF BURSARY APPLICATION You must reapply for financial assistance each year/semester, before the stipulated deadline. Renewal of financial assistance is dependent on your continued financial need and acceptable academic performance. PLEASE NOTE Financial aid is granted subject to the conditions stipulated by the donors and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. Financial aid is granted on merit and financial need. Such aid is not automatically renewed each year/semester. Students must therefore reapply annually if year students, and each semester if registered for semester courses. The applicant should be of sound moral standing and show proof of academic progress. Financial aid is administered by the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. Financial aid at the Bellville Campus and the Cape Town Campus is awarded in accordance with individual requirements and students are allowed to apply for aid at their campus of choice only. Only registered students may receive financial aid, and such funds will be paid directly into the student s fee account. Donors are entitled to a full and detailed account of the administration of their money. The Financial Aid Committee is authorised to take special circumstances into consideration when allocating financial aid. Financial aid is granted to full-time students only. Students who enroll for short courses or part-time classes are excluded from all financial aid schemes. 3 BURSARIES, MISCELLANEOUS BURSARIES AND TRUST BURSARIES FOR ALL FIELDS OF STUDY All applications are evaluated according to specific criteria and the more deserving candidates are considered. NATIONAL STUDENT FINANCIAL AID SCHEME (NSFAS) The NSFAS is South Africa s only public non-commercial student loan scheme which helps academically deserving and financially needy students to achieve academic goals at tertiary institutions in South Africa. This scheme is only for full-time National Diploma qualifications. ELIGIBILITY FOR NSFAS LOANS An applicant should be a citizen of the RSA; a registered student at an appointed tertiary institution of education in South Africa, e.g. the Cape Peninsula University of Technology; considered to have the potential to succeed; regarded as financially in need, and should be a member of a family who cannot afford to pay for the course not already have been awarded a bursary and/or scholarship by another source, that would cover the cost of studies; be unable to finance his or her studies without a NSFAS loan. The specific criteria to qualify: An average academic percentage of 50% Financial income: A means test will be used. All students who meet the criteria of the loan will not necessarily need the maximum loan permissible, since the loan should be the student s last resort in seeking financial aid. It is important to note that up to 40% of the initial loan amount can be converted into a bursary, depending on the student s academic performance. Applicants under the age of 16 should apply with the assistance of parents or legal guardians. Once the completed form has been returned to the University, it is checked, and considered in accordance with set criteria. On being satisfied that the student has been properly selected and that the Loan Agreement form/contract is in order, NSFAS will deposit the amount of the loan at the University s bank to be paid into the fee account for the student concerned. FINANCIAL DECLARATION Who should complete the declaration? If the student is under 16 years of age the declaration must be completed by the student and the parent or legal guardian on whom the student is dependent for financial assistance. If over 16 years of age the declaration may be signed by the student and parent or legal guardian. If the declaration is completed by a single parent who does not receive maintenance from the spouse, a short explanation must be given in the form of an affidavit. FINANCIAL AID COMMITTEE The Financial Aid Committee is responsible for granting and administering financial aid in terms of the general regulations of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, and in accordance with the criteria determined by donors. SPECIAL NOTES Full details of your family s financial situation must be disclosed in the financial aid application. An application for financial assistance may be refused if the Financial Aid Office is not satisfied that the information provided in the financial aid application is accurate and/or a complete and true statement of your and/or your family income. After submission of the form, the Financial Aid Office must be informed of any change of marital status or any change of financial and/or academic circumstances. DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED All members of the family (including the student) who are in receipt of an income (daily/weekly/monthly) and who must be included on the application form must submit either: a recent pay slip (not older than 3 months) if an employee, or a certified audited copy of the most recent balance sheet/financial statement if self-employed, including 3 months bank statements for both parents and company a recent tax assessment if not employed and income is derived from interest on capital, or a recent pension slip/letter (reflecting the gross amount) if in receipt of a pension, e.g. government pension, company pension or civil pension, or a UIF card together with an affidavit if one of the parents is not employed. 3
