3 Objectives of Train the Trainer Our purpose today is to work together to: Understand your roles and responsibilities as Instructors Increase your knowledge and skills around adult learning and change Reinforce what you ve learned over the past two days and translate that learning into your ability to adequately train your system end users Practice the delivery of training using the tools provided

5 What are the Roles of an Effective Instructor? Cheerleader Communicator System Expert Coach Mediator Sounding Board
6 Instructor s Responsibilities Create a repeatable training experience Enrich the course with your experience Allow participants to ask questions, contribute, and practice what is presented Recognize correct responses immediately and clearly Correct misunderstandings (not opinions) immediately, do not criticize answers Tie the course into daily work activities Support participants in the learning process Present the material in the way most comfortable to you (be yourself)
7 Instructor s Responsibilities, continued Use techniques to facilitate discussion Call on people by name (tags or labels) Seek participation from all participants Ask open-ended questions Respond to participants with positive statements Summarize input to show your interest and understanding
8 Before teaching: Instructor s Responsibilities, continued Review all materials (PowerPoint presentations and UPK simulations) Be well prepared to manage all aspects of the course Ensure student materials are prepared for the class Learn how to operate all classroom equipment (for example, projection unit) Make sure the classroom and equipment are ready to be used
9 While teaching: Instructor s Responsibilities, continued Make an effective presentation Help create a positive image for the new system Remain objective Make links between materials and on-the-job activities Manage time wisely Observe participants behaviors and respond accordingly Make learning enjoyable
10 Instructor s Responsibilities, continued After teaching (revise for 1 on 1): Help ensure that the room is returned to its original condition Ensure that the class attendance sheet is returned to the training team Report any problems with training materials, equipment, or facilities to the training team Follow up on unresolved issues and questions raised in class
11 Successful Instruction Participants can describe the new business processes and system principles Participants define and utilize basic PeopleSoft terms Participants begin to think of themselves as an important part of a global, integrated system Participants can perform core system procedures as part of their daily job functions Participants can explain what they know Participants can explain what they do not know how to perform

13 Training Adult Learners Adult learners cannot be instructed in the ways that children are instructed: Adult learners come to training with a rich body of life experience, clear attitudes and preferences, and a lot to lose from failure Adult learners approach learning with life, task, or problem agendas Adult learners need to be self-directing and quickly use what they learn
14 Managing the Adult Learning Environment Provide a clear structure for adult learners. Communicate early: Ground Rules Timeframe Objectives Skills to be acquired Do not wing it. Manage your instruction so that you can focus on end users learning.
15 Adult Learner Attitudes Every adult learner enters your training room with an attitude. Positive learners are more likely to use new tools and feel satisfied when they do. Your job is to be aware and sensitive to end users feelings, and manage the atmosphere. In doing so, you can convert end users attitudes towards change. Anxious Timid Pessimistic Resistant Cautious Enthusiastic Confident Eager Ready
16 Resistance = Opportunity Listen to resistance; it is an opportunity for change Hear both the positive and negative aspects of resistance Pinpoint the source of resistance Learn from resistance Respond to the resistance It usually quiets down
17 What is Effective Instruction? Information relates to the participants jobs Information builds on participants past experiences Materials are easy to understand and follow Participation is encouraged Students leave having learned discrete tasks or specific information

19 PowerPoint Presentations The PowerPoint presentations provided to you are intended to offer a structured approach to delivering the training. They cover key concepts, new business processes and describe the new functionality.
20 UPK Simulations UPK simulations are used to provide learners with an opportunity to practice hands-on tasks in a safe environment. Links to the UPK simulations are provided in the PowerPoints at the point in the presentation when they are to be utilized.
21 PeopleSoft You will be able to login to the PeopleSoft Test Environment to practice what you have learned today and also to train users prior to Go-Live

25 Practice Time Use this time as an opportunity to pair up and practice teaching what you ve learned this week using the tools provided. Select a portion of a topic of your choice and present the information as it s provided in the associated PowerPoint deck. Use a UPK simulation to demonstrate how to complete a PeopleSoft task. Allow you partner time to repeat that task using the UPK simulation. Take turns going back and forth as Instructor and Learner until you are comfortable in your role as an Instructor. Ask questions at any time if there is anything that you need to be successful in your role moving forward.
