1 Sample Lesson Plan High Intermediate ESOL Objectives Students Will Be Able To: Follow 2-3 step instructions Form questions Ask and answer questions as a way to get to know each other Organize themselves for the academic year Core Skills Organizing Scheduling Critical thinking/problem solving Soft skills Correlation to Follow oral instructions Massachusetts Participate in class discussions Curriculum Form questions in simple present Frameworks Ask and answer question in the present tense Skills Speaking and Listening Grammar Materials Icebreaker-How Well Do You Know Your Classmates handout Organization photo handout Organization activity handout Time Management Activity handout Warm-up (10 minutes) Preview Activity (25 minutes) Presentation of New Skills/Materials (30 minutes) Controlled Practice (20 minutes) Free Practice (10 minutes) Greet your classmates (discuss a variety of greetings and responses to them) Review names and see how many adjectives they remember Review notes from last class Icebreaker-Provide oral instructions for the activity How Well Do you Really Know Your Classmates? Students form the questions first Walk around asking and answering the questions Share the results-what did you learn about each other? Do you have a lot in common? Organization: Brainstorm- Look at the Organization Photo-What do you see? Answer the questions in small groups-come back together and discuss their responses to the photo Group work: In small groups-using the organization activity handout, students complete the activity-working together on it Come back together and share what we wrote on the handout about organization

(Write down his/her name.) Find 2 people who have children. Find out the ages of their children. (Ex: John-5 and 8) Q: Do you have children? How old are they? 1. Find 2 people who own cars and what kind of car they have. (Ex: Mary-Honda Civic) Find out the names of the town/cities 5 of your classmates live in
4 Find out the favorite food of 3 classmates. 3. Find out the favorite colors of 2 people. Find out the job that 2 people had before they came to the U.S.A. (past tense question) Find out the year that 3 of your classmates came to the U.S.A (past tense question) 3.
