2 About Tekna What is Tekna? Tekna is the association for professionals with master s degrees in science or technology disciplines. 3 Join Tekna Membership benefits Salary negotiations Tekna will help you to negotiate the appropriate level of remuneration by providing you with the information and arguments you need. Tekna has agreements on salary and terms and conditions of employment with private, government and municipal sector employers. Salary statistics Tekna s annual salary statistics provide a sound basis for assessing your salary. The full set of statistical data is available only to members. Moreover, each year Tekna calculates a recommended starting salary for new graduates. The contract of employment In cooperation with NHO (the Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise) Tekna has drawn up a standard contract template, which we recommend that you use. If you wish, Tekna will review your contract for you. Contact us before signing. Legal assistance As a member you are eligible for free legal advice on your terms and conditions of employment. Subject to further evaluation, Tekna s legal office may prepare and prosecute disputes before the courts. Examples of situations in which we can help include dismissals and reorganisations as well as questions relating to patents and copyright. Banking and insurance As a member of Tekna you will be eligible for a range of special products from Gjensidige Forsikring. In addition, you will receive a discount on all their standard property insurance policies. Gjensidige Bank is an online and telephone bank that offers free withdrawals, payments and loans. Professional development and career advice As a member of Tekna you will have access to a broad professional network which will be important in your professional development. We organise events within key areas of technology as well as management development and project management courses. Tekna offers courses, conferences and seminars of a high quality. The courses are developed by leading professionals within their fields. Tekna members qualify for discounts of up to NOK 1,000 on course fees. Anyone with a master s degree in a technical or scientific discipline can become a member of Tekna (for further details see the next page). Membership fee Student members: NOK 300 per year Ordinary membership fee: NOK 3,600* (2010), NOK 3,700* (2011) *+ membership fee to the local branch ranging from NOK 96 to NOK 264 per year. For the 2010 financial year, up to NOK 3,660 of the membership fee is tax deductible. Discounts In your first year after graduation you will pay one-quarter of the ordinary membership fee. In the second year you will pay half the ordinary membership fee, and in the third year threequarters of the ordinary fee. From the fourth year onwards the full membership fee is payable. If both you and your partner/spouse are members you will both pay a three-quarter membership fee from the fourth year after graduation. Tekna offers discounts to PhD students on scholarships and other students in higher education as well as to unemployed members. We also offer discounts to those on career s leave, members undertaking their military service, retired members and members living abroad. 4 Completing the application form Completing the application form This form is for use by applicants with higher education qualifications. Applicants with lower qualifications will need to complete a different application form. Go to Applicants with higher education qualifications Holders of master s degrees or the equivalent in which science or technology disciplines make up the primary part of the qualification are eligible for membership of Tekna. Please see the overview of qualifications for membership at: If the educational institution at which you received your master s degree is Norwegian or is registered in the database for foreign educational institutions compiled by the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education, see No further documentation need be submitted. In the case of qualifications from other educational institutions we would ask you to submit documentation in the form of your diploma and a description of the content and duration of the course of study. Professionals with higher education qualifications working in a science or technology post who have relevant experience in this area from their work, may also be eligible for membership, even if scientific or technology disciplines do not make up the primary part of the course of study. Applicants with graduate-level qualifications Professionals who have acquired knowledge equivalent to master s degree level through their professional training and practice may also apply for membership of Tekna. This applies to applicants with qualifications such as bachelor s and cand. mag. degrees and chartered engineers.
