4 History of Elite Hotels At the end of the 1950s, a business concept was created at the Stockholm Student Union. The idea was that student housing that stood vacant during the summer months would be let as hotel rooms. The business was driven successfully through a foundation-like organisation during the 1970s. In 1980, the business was transformed into a corporation, SSRS Holding AB, with Bicky Chakraborty at the helm. Three years later, the prestigious Hotel Savoy in Malmö was acquired and the march towards today s quality profile had begun. Since 1991, the organisation has been run under the name, Elite Hotels of Sweden. The sole owner and CEO is Bicky Chakraborty. origins The story of SSRS originates in the Stockholm Student Union. The goal was to create an international centre for Swedish and overseas students. This was made possible when the international student dorm Forum was built. The centre was inaugurated by the Education Minister at that time, and future Prime Minister, Ingvar Carlsson. Bicky Chakraborty was the centre s founder and initiator of the undertaking. In 1980, the corporation SSRS Holding AB (Stockholm Student Reception Service) was formed as a whollyowned subsidiary of SSSB. In 1983, the stately Hotel Savoy in Malmö was acquired, which was the beginning of SSRS history as an independent operation. By January 1985, the corporation s substantial growth meant that a different ownership structure would be required. Bicky Chakraborty took over ownership of SSRS from SSSB along with two listed companies, AB Aritmos and Skrinet AB. Ownership has changed several times over the years and was unstable until the end of Since January 1999, Bicky Chakraborty has had 100% ownership. There was, for a time, a tendency to tear down all the old city hotels in the country in order to build modern hotels similar to American motels. The company s mission was to acquire and refine traditional family-run city hotels and guest houses. Run with a strong sense of commitment and a good understanding of financials, the hotels have become profitable and this has subsequently afforded the opportunity to undertake careful restorations and refurbishment. current operations The company s name (from April 1991) is under the name Elite Hotels of Sweden AB. The five-star Elite Plaza Hotel is located in the street Västra Hamngatan, within walking distance of the Central Station, Gothenburg Opera, shopping and restaurants. Situated in a palatial building from 1889, in which all the original features have been preserved with great care, combining ancient stucco ceilings and mosaic floors harmoniously with elements of modern art and design. Bicky Chakraborty acquired Savoy Hotel in 1983, and has since then cared for the historic hotel with great reverence, implementing extensive restoration and refurbishment. Since March 2015 the hotel hosts the new exciting restaurant Savoy Grill, run by the famous duo behind the popular restaurant Johan P. The stylish Elite Hotel Residens also has a long history. Elite Hotel Stockholm Plaza in Stockholm s city centre is a stately and historical hotel in a beautiful building. It was designed in 1884, and opened in the mid 1980 s. Situated just next door, in the same building, is the hotel s famous restaurant Vassa Eggen Steak House, where food is always given the highest priority. An excellent choice of nightclubs, shopping areas and restaurants are all close by. The classic hotel, Elite Palace Hotel, is located in the picturesque quarter, Vasastan, opening its doors for the first time in The hotel was originally built to accommodate a growing number of motorists in Sweden and had a garage with 250 spaces that serviced the cars during the day. Elite Hotel Marina Tower is located in a unique old mill from 1890, in an impressive setting on the quayside, overlooking the inlet to Stockholm. The hotel opened in 2010, and is a modern conference hotel with a restaurant, outdoor terrace and a newly opened spa and Turkish Hamam, including a sauna, pool and gym. Elite Eden Park Hotel opened in summer This is an exclusive design hotel, located in central Stockholm, next to the tranquil Humlegården Park and the bustling shopping district of Stureplan. On the one side, there is the gastro pub, The Bishops Arms, whilst on the other, the restaurant, Miss Voon a member of the well-reputed Group F12 family, guaranteeing its guests a memorable gastronomic experience. Elite Hotel Adlon became a part of the chain in february 2014 and is the chain s latest addition in Stockholm. The hotel is situated on Vasagatan in central Stockholm. 9 Bicky Chakraborty owner and ceo In 1966 Bicky Chakraborty arrived in Stockholm and enrolled at the University of Stockholm for studies in social sciences. Immediately after arriving in Stockholm he was in the headlines of a Swedish daily Aftonbladet: He came from Calcutta to bring life to the nightlife of Stockholm. This was in respect to a charity show organised by him for the benefit of the Save the Children organisation. Bicky Chakraborty subsequently got involved in the social and political activities of Stockholm Student Union. He was the first non-swedish person to hold the prestigious post of Programme Secretary of Stockholm University Students Union. In 1970 Bicky Chakraborty became the head of the International Student Centre run by the Student Unions of Stockholm. The aim was to bridge the cultural gap between the Swedish and foreign student bodies. Another objective was to provide short term solution to housing problems, faced particularly by the foreign students at that time. In 1980 Bicky Chakraborty founded SSRS holding AB to develop a new brand of hotel enterprise in Sweden. He acquired well known, family run heritage hotels located all over Sweden. Most of these hotels were run down, suffering from financial and managerial difficulties. Had these properties not been acquired by Bicky Chakraborty most of them would, in all likelihood, have ceased to exist. The efforts to preserve these heritage buildings were hailed by many Swedes, both in government and in cultural circles, as substantial contribution to the preservation of inner city areas dating from the late 19th century. Today the company operates about 27 premium hotels under the brand name Elite Hotels of Sweden and 4 Hotel Bishops Arms. In 2016 Elite Hotels will open two new hotels in Umeå and Uppsala. The company also owns and operates 40 English quality pubs as The Bishops Arms all over Sweden. Elite Hotels of Sweden is currently one of the larger Swedish hotel groups with a turnover of SEK 2 billion and an EBITDA of SEK 320 million. Bicky Chakraborty is the sole owner of the company.
