1 How to Install Audacity and the LAME MP3 Encoder on Windows Step 1 Open your web browser and type in the address bar. Step 2 Click the link to download the current stable version. Step 3 After clicking the link, you will be brought to the Audacity download page. Click the installer link listed under recommended download.

2 Step 4 After clicking the link, a save file dialog box will appear. Click Save File. Step 5 Save the file in your desired location. Then open audacity-win exe when it has finished downloading. Step 6 After you have opening the installation file, the setup audacity dialog box will appear. Click Next.

3 Step 7 After clicking Next, the license agreement box should appear. Click I accept the agreement and then click Next. Step 8 After clicking Next, an Information dialog box will appear. Click Next.

4 Step 9 After clicking Next, a Select Destination Location dialog box will appear. Here you can determine where you would like Audacity to be installed. After you have picked your location, Click Next. Step 10 After clicking Next, a Select Addition Tasks dialog box will appear. In this box you can determine if you want Audacity to appear on your desktop and if you want to associate Audacity with Audacity project files on your computer. After you selected your options click Next.

5 Step 11 After clicking Next, an installation dialog box will appear. Click Install Step 12 When the Audacity has finished installing a dialog box will appear. Click Finish. That completes the installation of Audacity itself. To save recorded files in certain formats, i.e. to encode them, you will need to install the required encoders. The following steps detail how to install a popular MP3 encoder

6 Step 1 In order to save files as.mp3s on Audacity, you have to download the LAME MP3 Encoder off the website. Return to Step 2 Click on the link LAME MP3 Encoder which is listed under Optional Downloads. Step 3 After clicking the link, your browser will bring you to a page which contains the link to the LAME download page. Click the LAME download page link under the Windows category. This link will redirect you to another website because due to software patents, the software could not be distributed on the Audacity website.

7 Step 4 Once you have been redirected to the LAME download page, click on the link libmp3lame-win-3.97.zip listed under the title For Audacity and on Windows. Step 5 After clicking the link, an Open Dialog Box will appear. Make sure that Open with is selected and CompressedFolder is selected in the drop box. If all these requirements are met, Click OK. (If you are using Internet Explorer the dialog box will not give you the option of which program to use and instead of clicking OK, you will click Open)

8 Step 6 After the file is finished downloading a window will open with the file libmp3lame-3.97 listed under Name. Double click on that file. Step 7 After double clicking on the file, another window will appear. In this window select File and click on Extract All under the File menu.

9 Step 8 After clicking Extract here, an Extraction Wizard dialog box will appear. Click Next. Step 9 After clicking Next, a Select a Destination dialog box will appear. Click Browse.

10 Step 10 After clicking Browse, another Select a destination dialog box will appear. It is important to select the right destination for the libmp3lame-3.97 file or your.mp3 encoder will not function. Click the plus sign next to My Computer. Step 11 After clicking on the plus sign next to My Computer, subcategories should drop down below My Computer. Click on the plus sign next to Local Disk (C:).

11 Step 12 After clicking on the plus sign next to Local Disk (C:), more subcategories should drop down below Local Disk (C:). Click on the plus sign next to Program Files. Step 13 After clicking on the plus sign next to Program Files, more subcategories should drop down below Program Files. Click on the plus sign next to Audacity.

12 Step 14 After clicking on the plus sign next to Audacity, more subcategories should drop down below Audacity. Click on the file Plug-Ins, so it is highlighted in blue. Then click OK. Step 15 After clicking OK, you will be sent back to the original Select a Destination dialog box. Verify that C:\Program Files\Audacity\Plug-Ins is displayed in the text box under Files will be extracted to this directory. If this requirement is met, Click Next.

13 Step 16 After the files are extracted, the Extraction Complete dialog box will appear. Click Finish. That completes the installation of the MP3 encoder. Now you will be able to encode your Audacity files to a compatible MP3 format.
