2 Message from the President As President of the World Maritime University (WMU), it gives me enormous pleasure and pride to present our Executive and Professional Development Programme. We have entered a very exciting period in the history of WMU. The WMU Board of Governors and the IMO Council have endorsed the IMO Secretary-General s Study on the Sustainability of WMU, which identifies eight strategic directions for the University. In light of this development, WMU has expanded its offerings to include oceans and energy goals of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and in particular Goals 7, 14 and 17. Goal 7 concerns access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. Goal 14 deals with the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans, seas and maritime resources for sustainable development. Goal 17 deals with strengthening the means of implementation and revitalization of the global partnership for sustainable development. WMU is the global center of excellence for postgraduate maritime education, research and capacity building. With the strength of its solid track record, it is well placed to offer Postgraduate Diploma programmes that meet the educational and capacity building needs of maritime and ocean constituents, including the relevant industry actors. We have, for instance, strengthened our partnership with Lloyd s Maritime Academy to include Postgraduate Diplomas in Maritime Energy and in International Maritime Law. This builds on our existing joint programme on Marine Insurance, which has been running since We are also pleased to announce our new partnership with DNV GL with a Postgraduate Diploma in Executive Maritime Management covering topics of critical importance for today s maritime managers, including on global maritime and ocean regulatory and management issues. These courses are offered through distance learning and e-learning modalities, complementing our other academic programmes delivered at our headquarters in Malmö and campuses in China. It is my hope that you will find our Postgraduate Diploma programmes relevant and responsive to your needs as well as that of the broader marine and ocean constituents. I am therefore inviting you to join one of our programmes as an investment well worth making. We have a commitment to the highest level of academic and professional standards. 4 Introduction by the Director of Executive Education and Professional Development The World Maritime University (WMU) has established a proven track-record of offering Postgraduate Diplomas (PgDips) and distance-learning Executive Education, along with Executive and Professional Development Courses (EPDCs), which meet the educational needs of maritime professionals, organizations and administrations, building maritime capacity globally. Our Postgraduate Diplomas offer a fine blend between academic theory and business practice as they are delivered in partnership with leading providers of maritime training and education: Lloyd s Maritime Academy (LMA) and DNV GL Maritime Academy. The knowledge acquired can be effectively transferred and immediately applied to the work environment. The different Postgraduate Diplomas offered are carefully designed and continuously revised to meet the much changing educational needs in the maritime industry. Our distance-learning programmes are an indispensable investment to our students and a significant contribution to meeting the need for expertise across the international maritime community. The currently offered Postgraduate Diplomas represent all topics of current maritime interest and importance. Our oldest Diploma, Marine Insurance, introduced in 2005 (with LMA), is one of the most established study programmes in the industry in that area. Our innovative Maritime Energy Diploma, introduced in 2014 (with LMA), provides up-to-date analysis of current initiatives and future developments in energy efficient shipping. The Executive Maritime Management Diploma, introduced in 2015 (with DNV GL), provides a boot camp for managers, addressing current operational, legal, commercial and technical topics of critical importance, allowing managers to remain competitive. Finally, the International Maritime Law Diploma, offered since 2002 by LMA and from 2015 in a new partnership with WMU, develops academic knowledge and awareness of international trade and maritime law. You can contact me or my associate Ms. Tanya Nystedt, the Senior Faculty Assistant, along with the Directors of each of the four Postgraduate Diplomas, to discuss your maritime distancelearning education needs and to find the best educational solution from WMU. We welcome your interest in WMU s Postgraduate Diplomas and distance-learning Executive Education and look forward to collaborate with you during our programmes. 6 Postgraduate Diploma in Marine Insurance The World Maritime University and Lloyd s Maritime Academy offer the only Postgraduate Diploma in Marine Insurance by tutored distance learning. Designed to be of benefit to anyone involved in insurance, shipping, international trade and commerce, along with professional advisers, brokers and agents in the sector, the programme delivers postgraduate education in the way the marine insurance markets function and the terms of standard covers available. With premium income now often insufficient to cover claims in several categories of marine insurance there is no more important time to study the subject in order to gain personal and commercial expertise to maintain competitive advantage. The course is delivered via a latest generation online learning management system and supports study globally via the internet. Programme Information The Modules: The 12-month programme consists of five modules, each of which is a compulsory element of the course, and which are assessed by four assignments and a final examination. Tutorial Seminar: During the programme you will be invited to attend an optional seminar that provides additional support. Additional materials: Together with the distance study modules participants receive the core textbook Marine Insurance: Law and Practice by FD Rose to support their studies. Credits: The programme consists of 40 ECTS. The Programme Covers: 1. Principles of Marine Insurance Law: Explores the essential features and peculiarities of the law of marine insurance, with particular emphasis on the Marine Insurance Act 1906, as well as an introduction into carriage of good by sea. 2. Special Categories of Marine Insurance Cover: Investigates all main categories of insurance contracts in the maritime field. It deals with basic insurance cover for the maritime property of the ship owner and cargo owner as well as for protection against other economic risks. Comprehensive explanations of the perils insured against, including collision liabilities, are explored. 3. P&I Clubs and Mutual Insurance: This method of providing liability insurance to ship operators continues to dominate the market, and the module studies how the P&I Clubs came into existence and why they continue to operate in much the same way. 4. Marine Reinsurance: Insurance is a way of transferring the economic consequences of a risk to another party, the insurer. Insurers in their turn further transfer and spread the risk to other insurers by reinsurance. This specialised area is comprehensively scrutinised in this module. 5. Claims: The module examines the practical procedures and implications related to filing a claim under a marine insurance policy. 6 wmu.se/distance-learning

8 Postgraduate Diploma in Maritime Energy With the shipping industry under increasing pressure to meet more stringent environmental rules and regulations while remaining competitive, the Postgraduate Diploma in Maritime Energy, offered by WMU in partnership with LMA, delivers the key knowledge and critical understanding needed to drive a more efficient and responsible shipping industry - which at the same time can enhance profitability. In a sector where varying trade volumes, overcapacity, freight rates and bunker costs regularly forcing industry leaders to pursue all cost-saving possibilities to survive, this is an important strategic and operational course. From naval architects and surveyors, to shipping company operations personnel and commercial managers, through to regulators and marine administration personnel, this course is ideal for anyone with a role to shape today s and tomorrow s maritime industry. Programme Information The Modules: The 12-month programme consists of five modules, each of which is a compulsory element of the course, and which are assessed by five assignments and a final examination. Additional Materials: In addition to the core study modules students will also have access to a series of WMU recorded video lectures addressing related subjects. Credits: The programme consists of 42 ECTS. The Programme Covers: 1. Introduction to Energy Management and the International Response in Shipping: Key notions of energy sources and security, the impact of air emissions and the international response, particularly in shipping, are explored. The module builds a common vocabulary and understanding, starting by exploring notions such as externality, management and governance. 2. Energy Efficiency and Ship Design: Fuel consumption in ship design and operation is studied and a complete ship energy system design is examined, including pertinent IMO regulations. Both ship resistance and propulsion are reviewed to establish principles of ship powering in the context of energy efficiency improvement methodologies. 3. Energy Efficient Ship Operations: Optimal ship operation provide by far the greatest opportunities for energy saving and CO2 reduction. This module considers key topics in energy efficiency; from management to legal and commercial issues; from just-in-time and virtual arrival to slow steaming and relevant technical and legal constraints; from weather routing to e-navigation and advanced communication systems; and from ballast water to trim optimisation and port/terminal operations. The module also considers how success depends on a range of stakeholders from charterers and port operators to ship owners and managers, and binding legal contracts that need to be observed. Consideration is given to how these impose constraints and create barriers to the most efficient operation of ships. 4. Energy Management On-Board Ship: The proper management and maintenance of various ship-board systems and technical assets represent an important opportunity for greater energy efficiency and reduced costs. This module deals with ship-board activities and their impact on fuel consumption with a particular focus on the optimal performance of technical systems and machinery. 8 wmu.se/distance-learning
