How-to Guide Tips, tools and ideas to make the most of your hairy sacrifice. Phone: #worldsgreatestshave
Thanks so much for signing up! Take a look through these brilliant tried and tested ways to help you make your hairy sacrifice a guaranteed success. How the money helps 2 Getting sponsored to shave your hair is an extraordinary way to help people with blood cancer Today, 34 Australians will be given the devastating news that they have leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma, and they ll turn to the Leukaemia Foundation for help. By shaving, colour or waxing the hair on your head, chest or face, you give families the free emotional and practical support they need, and continue the urgent search for cures. $560 can give a regional family a free place to stay close to treatment in the city, for one week. $1,200 can provide free transport for people who are too ill to drive after chemotherapy treatment, for two weeks. $2,000 can aid future breakthroughs by funding a major blood cancer research project, for one week. $4,800 can fund the laboratory costs of a researcher working on a major blood cancer research project, for 3 months. We ll update your page as you reach each fundraising milestone so you and your supporters can see how much of a difference you re making. Good Luck!
Choose your hairy challenge There are options! You can shave, colour, wax, lose the beard and more. Shaving If you re going to shave, we prefer clipper length No1 or No2. Many women opt for No3 or No4. For health and liability reasons we don t recommend blade shaves down to the skin. Colouring If you re colouring, spray your locks with a stunning temporary hair colour. We recommend you use non-permanent hair spray or chalk which washes out the same day. Cinta Intense Hair Colour Sprays are ideal and are available from all good pharmacies. Wear a wig. Other ideas for girls Wear a wacky style for the day. Go crazy with clips, scrunchies and hair extensions! Got long hair? Go short then shorter still! Other ideas for guys Try shaving off your beard, moustache or sideburns. Wax your legs or chest! Lose the mullet or the comb-over! Use face-paint to get creative on your already bald head.
Tell your friends! Give your sponsors a heads up to kick start your fundraising. Announce your shave to friends, family and workmates then there s no backing out! Make your Shave Page work for you Your online shave page is the key to success. 4 Upload a profile photo to make the page all about you Add your personal story to tell people why you re taking part Post updates and photos on your page to keep your supporters in the picture Spread the word Like our page on Facebook to keep up with the latest news and share ideas with fellow shavers. Post a link to your Shave Page on Facebook to make it even easier for friends to sponsor you online. Set this up by clicking the Get Social panel when you log in to our website. Each time you update your Shave Page remember to share your post on social media, too! Always use #worldsgreatestshave when you post pics and updates on social media. Ask your friends to join you Shaving and fundraising is a lot easier and more of a laugh in a group. Get friends or workmates to join in the fun and assemble a dream team! It s easy to invite people to join your team by . Log in and go to Team Tools and then Recruit Team Members. You can also send texts and post invitations on social media. LinkedIn is great if you re planning a team at work. And if you re with a national company we can even create a Super Team. It will list everyone on a single Shave Page and total up your combined effort in one place. To do this call us on
Decide When and Where Shave or colour anytime during our advertised World s Greatest Shave weekend, or any date that suits you. Attend one of the free events Many events are open to the public with hairdressers and equipment all provided. 5 For a list of public events visit worldsgreatestshave.com Host your own event Host a public event World s Greatest Shave is more fun when you stage your own shave! Your shave event can be as simple or sophisticated as you want and held on any day. Hold an event at work and don t just keep it in-house. Tap up your clients, suppliers, families of employees and really get behind the cause. Use the checklist on page 8 to help you plan. Working together will make you all feel good about supporting people with blood cancer and their families. With the Leukaemia Foundation behind them, they can focus on what s most important their treatment. We re always looking for people who are willing to host a shave event where the public can shave in front of a crowd. Fancy being an official host? We can send you a special host kit and list your event on the website so shavers know where to come! Call us on or get in touch by at worldsgreatestshave.com/help We ll get straight back to you to set everything up.
Top tips for getting sponsors The hardest part about raising money can be asking people to sponsor you! Here s our who, what, where and how! When What 6 Start asking for sponsorship right now! Don t wait until after you ve done the deed to kick-start your fundraising. Tell everyone your goal and get started today. Fundraise on the day you shave. Auction off the right to shave your hair and collect donations from onlookers. Keep fundraising after you shave. Your can keep going until June 30. One easy way is to charge people $5 to touch your freshly shaved head! Who Ask everyone you know: Family, friends, club members, workmates, clients, customers, other stores or departments and suppliers at work. Check out the memory jogger. It has a list of everyone you can ask there are bound to be some you ve not thought of! Always ask for a specific amount. Often your friends and family just don t know how much to give and sometimes this uncertainty can actually put them off. $27 can provide a pack to help someone understand their disease and the challenges ahead $36 can give emotional support to help someone overcome the initial shock of being diagnosed $58 can provide free transport to someone who is too ill to drive before and after chemotherapy $80 can give a regional family a free place to stay close to treatment in the city, for one night $120 can fund a scholarship to give essential support to a major blood cancer research project, for one day Start by sponsoring yourself on your page. You ll set an example for others to follow. So give as much as you can afford! Fast fact: Previous shavers who asked for a specific amount raised nearly twice as much as those who just asked generally.
Why How Your friends are far more likely to donate to your shave if they understand why you re doing this extraordinary thing. Always tell your sponsors that their donation will go towards research which is needed urgently to find better treatments and cures for blood cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma, as well as supporting families during their long and gruelling treatment. The Leukaemia Foundation provides vital practical and emotional support to families, free of charge. Where Asking face-to-face is very successful. The key is to ask. Most people are surprised at how generous their sponsors can be, so don t be nervous about asking. Send s, SMS and Facebook posts asking for sponsorship. Log in and use the Sponsor tools to send messages, which include a link to your Shave Page so people can sponsor you with their credit card and get a receipt by straight away. Check to see if the company you work for runs a dollar-matching scheme and make sure you apply for a share. It really motivates everyone at work if they know that the bosses will double what they donate to your shave! Here s how you could hit a goal of $560 in just one week! Ask yourself! Start by making your own donation for $50. Ask four family members to sponsor you for $25 each. Ask two businesses you frequent to donate $50 each. Ask 5 co-workers to sponsor you for $20 each. Ask 5 people at school club or church to donate $10 each. Ask your boss for a company contribution of $100. Ask 3 friends to donate $20 each. $560 can give a regional family a free place to stay close to treatment in the city for one week. That makes it really worthwhile doesn t it? 7
Preparing for your big day Use this list to check you ve thought of everything. 8 Book a room or space for your event Invite everyone to come Put up posters Set up a Facebook event and invite friends Ask the business to dollar match employees fundraising or make a company conation Buy hair colour spray and disposable gloves Buy capes, balloons, T-shirts and hats from worldsgreatestshave.com Organise clippers and disinfectant Check there s electricity to plug them in and long enough cables Organise a hairdresser and people to spray colours Organise helpers for setting up Ask someone to be the MC or make a speech Find brooms and garbage bags for cleaning up hair Arrange mirrors and chairs Ask someone to take before and after photos Provide food or drinks Take selfies before you shave Log in, check your total and tell everyone the latest news Send one last to sponsors and remind friends on social media that today s the big day Take a collection box around spectators Auction off the right to do the shaving Savour the experience and be proud of the extraordinary difference you re making Open your on-the-day envelope and wear your badge so people know what you ve done and why Post before and after pics on social media including #worldsgreatestshave Be sun smart cover your head and ears with a hat or beanie, apply SPF 30+.
Paying in Your Money The easiest way to raise money is online ask by or Facebook. Your sponsors complete their credit card donation on the web. Easy-peasey! At the bank Collect all the cash and cheques and take them to any branch of the bank on your deposit slip (there are two inside your receipt book). Direct deposit using BPAY Put the money directly into our bank account using telephone or online banking. Important! Return your books! Tax Office rules say we MUST get your receipt books back. Our address for returned books is: Leukaemia Foundation GPO Box 9954 IN YOUR CAPITAL CITY. 9 Our BPAY biller code and your unique reference number are on page 3 of your receipt book. It s as easy as paying a bill. Put it on your own plastic! You can pay in funds collected at our website. Log in and use the Sponsor Tools to Pay-in Funds that you ve raised from family and friends. You can display their donation on your page and pay it with your own credit card. Mail us a cheque Enclose a cheque when you send your receipt book back. Make it payable to the Leukaemia Foundation.
Frequently Asked Questions Here is a list of some common questions that you might have about the World s Greatest Shave. 10 Do I have to raise money when I shave? Getting sponsored to shave off your hair is the whole point! Don t miss the chance to have fun and help a really important cause at the same time. You don t have to raise thousands, every bit helps. Can I set a target so I only shave when I get to $x? Yes, you can but we ask that you commit to colouring your hair first and tell your sponsors you will shave if you reach your target. That way, you are doing something to your hair whatever you raise. Do I need public liability insurance for my event? The Leukaemia Foundation has public liability insurance of $50 million which covers standard fundraising including World s Greatest Shave as long as you stick to all the event policies. Your venue will also need to have its own public liability insurance. If your venue needs proof of your cover, call us. Where can I get colour hair spray? It is available at most public shaves or go to your local pharmacy, large retail chain or hairdresser where there are lots of non-permanent coloured hairsprays to choose from. We recommend Cinta Intense Hair Colour Sprays which are available at many leading pharmacies and large retail chains. Can I shave or colour at another time of year? Absolutely. You re welcome to shave any time during the year. Call us on to discuss a time that suits you. Can I use some of the money I ve raised to pay a hairdresser or to buy hair spray? Your sponsors have donated money believing it will go towards the charity, so you must give it directly to the Leukaemia Foundation. If you need a receipt for donated goods please contact us. (Tax Office rules do not allow us to give receipts for donated services).
Under 18? Don t give the grown ups a nasty shock! Always get permission from a parent and check with your school first. They need to fill in the consent form available on our website. When you signed up you should already have told us a parent or guardian s name and phone number if not log in and tell us now, or call us free on Can I donate my hair? Your hair can be used to make wigs for people who lose theirs during cancer treatment. It has to be 35cm or longer, plaited, tied with elastic bands at both ends (before it s cut), not coloured or bleached, and in good condition. Search online for wigmakers or try your local hospital. The Leukaemia Foundation can t accept donations of hair so please don t send it to us in the mail. Can I knock on doors on my street to ask for donations? Please don t doorknock your neighbourhood to collect sponsorship or promote the World s Greatest Shave. In many council areas around Australia, doorknocking is illegal without a special permit. How do I give receipts for an unusual amount of money (e.g. $51)? Write out one of the blank, hand written, receipts in the back of the receipt book. It s even easier to ask for sponsors online and we ll them a receipt. 11 Can I get media coverage for my event or for my shave? Please feel free to tell your local media about what you re doing you can download our media release online. If the media need information about the Leukaemia Foundation, leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood disorders they must talk to the Leukaemia Foundation s media team in your state on More questions? Search through our comprehensive list of Frequently Asked Questions online at worldsgreatestshave.com/help Or chat with us using our Live Help Online instant messaging service. Or call us on and talk to a local expert!
