1 Teaching Tips: Guide to Windows Movie Maker Introduction This is not a comprehensive guide to using Windows Movie Maker and it is certainly not the definitive Help file for Movie Maker! The aim of this resource is to highlight some of the functions of Movie Maker that teachers have found useful and to provide some guidance on the commands and operations needed to use these functions. Many Dynamic Learning titles contain Video resources documents that detail useful video clips that can be downloaded from the British Pathe archive and which many schools can use freely for educational purposes. To find out the exact position of your school you will need to contact your Regional Broadband Consortium Content Manager. This site might be a good starting point: broadband consortia.html. There are also other sources of moving image material, such as the Teachers TV web site and the Internet Archive. Before you can use Movie Maker to create your own films you will have to download the film clips and/or images you want to use and then work with the clips from this new location. Make sure you make a careful note of where you save your clips. Once you have your clips and images ready you are ready to explore the potential of Movie Maker. Step by step 1. 2 2. To import your image or movie clip go to the task panel and click Import pictures or Import video. Select the folder where your clip is saved, select the file you wish to use and then click Import. If you use the Restore down button you can also drag and drop movie clips or images into Movie Maker. The middle button is the Restore Down button. Note that Movie Maker divides clips into smaller segments when it imports a clip. This can sometimes be useful, and at other times irritating. You can stop Movie Maker from dividing clips into scenes by making sure that the box Create clips for video files is NOT ticked you import a clip. 3. You can import music/sounds into Movie Maker in just the same way. Click on Import audio or music and select the files to be imported. 4. Once you have imported your video files you are ready to make your movie. Start by working in Storyboard mode. Copyright 2009 Hodder Education. All rights reserved. 2 of 6

3 5. Select the clip or picture you want to start your movie by clicking on it once and dragging it to the first space on the storyboard. 6. Add further clips or pictures in the same way. You can also view your film coming together using the Timeline view. This gives you a sense of how long each clip or image will last on screen as a proportion of the whole film. 7. If you want to view your movie so far, click on the first clip on the storyboard and then click play on the monitor window. Show full screen Play Remember to save your work frequently. 4 8. Once you have the clips and/or pictures in you can add transitions to make the movie look more professional, e.g. dissolve or fade. In the Task panel click on View video transitions and then click and drag the one you want to the space between the two clips. 9. Add further transitions and then save. 10. 5 11. You can click Change the title animation to change the animation, e.g. to change from scrolling to spinning titles. Change the title animation 12. To edit your movie more precisely swap from Storyboard to Timeline view. You can now shorten or lengthen the clips, add music (import music and then drag to the audio bar) and students can add their voiceover. 6 13. To record a voiceover click on the microphone (Narrate Timeline) icon under the task panel. Once in the narrate timeline option, plug in your microphone and then click Start Narration. The clip will play simultaneously so that you can time your voiceover to match the pictures/clips. To finish narration click Stop Narration.
