2 HOW TO HOLD A TRULY SCRUMPTIOUS BAKE SALE Here are 10 simple steps to make organising your bake sale a piece of cake. 1 The more the merrier, so get friends, colleagues and family in on the baking action. They could bake a few treats or help out on the day. 2 Find a venue that you can use for free your home, work, local sports centre, place of worship or community hall. 3 Pick a date for your bake sale as soon as you ve chosen the venue to avoid double bookings. 4 Time your bake sale for elevenses, lunch or afternoon tea, when people are most likely to fancy a sweet bite. 5 Don t be shy. Tell everyone about your bake sale, in person, on Facebook, Twitter, and noticeboards in the lead-up to the big day. Use our readymade poster in this kit and, for even more ideas, check out our Promote your Fundraising Guide. 6 Take plenty of containers and sandwich bags in case anyone wants their baked treats to go. People will buy more cakes if they have something to take them home in. 7 Extras on the side like tea, coffee or soft drinks to wash down all that cake will help you raise a bit more cash too. 8 Have a list of ingredients next to your cakes for people with allergies. You can use the cake tags and labels in this kit to label your nut-free or gluten-free bakes. 9 Bring a small float with you so that you have enough spare change for people, and make your cake prices round numbers to make things easier. 10 Use the sweepstake poster to raise an easy 18 extra. Bake it better: The average Sport Relief baker raises an amazing 180. This 180 can make a world of difference for people living incredibly tough lives here at home in the UK and across the world s poorest communities. 180 could provide professional training and one-to-one support to two people who are caring for loved ones with dementia. 180 could train a midwife to provide life-saving care for thousands of pregnant mothers and newborns in Africa. Of all the money raised by the public for Sport Relief, 50% is used to make a difference right here at home, in the UK. The other 50% goes towards transforming lives across the world s poorest communities. The money you raise can do incredible things.

3 LITTLE EXTRAS TO RAISE MORE CASH A pick and mix of tried and tested ideas to really help your fundraising rise to the occasion. 1 Have a lucky cupcake. Ask a local business to donate a prize, add a sticker to the bottom of the cupcake, and whoever picks it wins. Simply brilliant. 2 Guess the weight of the cake pay to enter and whoever guesses closest to the real weight wins the cake. 3 Fill a cookie jar with cookies or sweets; everyone pays to enter and the person who guesses nearest to the actual number wins the jar. 4 Download and hang up the Bake Off Sweepstake Poster and ask people to pay to play. 5 Bring your icing kit along and offer to personalise cupcakes for your customers and charge a little extra for this. 6 Make up recipe cards and sell them alongside your cakes. 7 If you re having the cake sale at work, you could ask your employer to match the funds you raise. 8 Have a money box at the door so that people can give a little extra if they want. 9 You could make your bake sale part of a bigger event like a clothes swap or quiz. 10 Let everyone know about your event using our Promote your Fundraising Guide. 4 CHOCOLATE CHIP BANANA BREAD Banana bread is a classic all-in-one cake. This one has a lovely dense texture, so there is no need for baking powder. Dark brown bananas add intense flavour and sweetness. Ingredients MAKES: 1 large loaf cake 100g unsalted butter 250g self-raising flour Good pinch of sea salt 150g light muscovado sugar 100g plain pecan or walnut pieces 50g dark chocolate chips 250g peeled very ripe bananas (2 3 depending on size) 2 medium eggs, at room temperature, beaten SUGGESTED SELLING PRICE 1 a slice Method 1 Preheat the oven to 180 C (160 C fan), 350 F, Gas 4. Grease the tin with butter and line the base and two short sides with a long strip of baking paper. 2 Gently melt the butter in a small pan over a low heat, or in the microwave. Leave to cool. 3 Put the flour, salt, muscovado sugar, pecan or walnut pieces and dark chocolate chips into a mixing bowl and mix thoroughly with a wooden spoon, crushing any big lumps of sugar. 4 Put the peeled bananas onto a large plate and mash them fairly roughly with a fork you don t want a smooth purée, it s better to have some small lumps left in to give a little texture to the cake. Add the bananas to the bowl with the eggs and the cooled melted butter, then mix together for 1 minute, using a wooden spoon, until everything is well combined. 5 Scrape the mixture into the prepared tin and spread it around evenly, getting it right into the corners of the tin. 6 Bake for 55 minutes until the top of the cake is a good golden brown. Check your cake is cooked by inserting a cocktail stick or skewer into the centre; if it comes out clean, it is ready. Test it in a few other spots, too, in case you hit a lump of molten chocolate. 7 Stand the tin on a wire rack and leave to cool for 5 minutes. Run a round-bladed knife around the inside of the tin to loosen the cake, then carefully lift it out using the ends of the lining paper. Leave it on the wire rack until it is completely cold, then peel off the lining paper. 5 INDIVIDUAL PARIS-BRESTS TECHNICAL CHALLENGE Good luck! Ingredients For the choux: 80g water 60g milk Pinch of salt Pinch of sugar 55g butter 112g strong flour 3 eggs 1 egg, for egg wash Flaked almonds For the filling: 600ml double cream 1 vanilla pod For the praline: 200g caster sugar 100g hazelnuts SUGGESTED SELLING PRICE 2 Method 1 Preheat the oven to 200 degrees centigrade, fan. 2 Put the water, milk, salt, sugar and butter in a saucepan and heat over a medium heat until the butter has just melted. 3 Turn the heat up and add the flour to the mix. 4 Remove the pan from the heat and beat vigorously until a soft dough is formed that comes away from the sides of the pan. Return to the heat and cook out for at least five minutes. 5 Allow to cool slightly and then gradually beat in the egg until a soft glossy dough is formed. 6 Put the pastry into a piping bag, and snip a generous hole. 7 Pipe four rings approximately 10cm in diameter. It's best if each ring is piped in one motion. 8 Lightly brush the top with egg wash. Then sprinkle flaked almonds over the top of the choux. 9 Bake in the oven for minutes. Turn the heat down to 160 degrees fan and bake until the choux is golden and well risen for a further 10 minutes. 10 Once baked, immediately slice the rings in half horizontally and return to the oven to dry out for approximately 3-4 minutes. 11 To make the praline, melt the caster sugar in a pan over a medium heat until the sugar has melted and a caramel colour is achieved. Add the hazelnuts to the pan and swirl so the hazelnuts are coated in the caramel. Pour out onto non-stick silicon paper and allow to cool and harden. 12 Once cool, blitz the praline in a mini food processor into a fine dust. 13 Slice the vanilla pod in half and scrape out the seeds, stirring them through the cream. Softly whip the cream. Place into a piping bag fitted with a star nozzle. 14 Sprinkle half the praline onto the bottom halves of the choux rings. Then pipe the cream in a generous circular motion over the praline. 15 Sprinkle the remaining praline over the cream and put the pastry ring lids on top. 16 Dust with icing sugar and place on serving plates.

8 THE ICING ON THE CAKE Add the finishing touches to your bake sale with some readymade bunting for the venue. Instructions: 1 Print out the sheet as many times as you need. 2 Cut out each section of bunting along the dotted line. 3 Fold the tab over and attach to some string or ribbon with tape or glue. 4 Hang up and decorate around your bake sale. fold fold charity (England/Wales); SC (Scotland). 9 DIY CAKE TAGS AND LABELS 1 Print out the sheet as many times as you need. 2 Cut out each label/tag along the dotted line. 3 For the tags, punch a hole where indicated and thread string or ribbon through the hole and attach to your plates of cakes. 4 For the labels, just fold in half and you re done.
