1 VII. CIRCULATION OF WEEKLIES AND OTHER PERIODICALS The Indian Press, especially comprising weeklies, monthlies and other periodicals, has shown significant growth in the recent years, which has been reflected elaborately in different statistical tables from 7.1 to 7.10 in this Chapter. The periodicals other than dailies and tri/bi weeklies formed an important part of the circulation in Print Media. It highlights and covers diverse topics such as finance, religion and philosophy, medicine, current affairs, fiction, art and science, sports, women power and children in different languages. For the current financial year , a total number of 14,882 annual statements were received from the publishers online in respect of other periodicals raising their claimed circulation figure to 21,32,45,547 copies per publishing day (Table 7.2). As a growth rate of 16.78% was recorded in e-filing of annual statements by weeklies and other periodicals, an increase of 15.02% was also recorded in their claimed circulation this year compared to the year previous year Among the periodicals, Weeklies dominated the scene by bagging a total number of 8,084 publications out of 14,882 publications which filed online annual statements for and in circulation also remained at the top by claiming 12,74,83,338 out of 21,32,45,547 copies per publishing day, followed by Monthlies 3,912 with circulation of 5,22,92,669 copies, Fortnightlies 2,219 with circulation of 2,87,69,695 copies, Quarterlies 309 with circulation of 18,24,274 copies and Annuals 76 with 14,97,868 copies. The remaining 282 publications were of other periodicities with a claimed circulation of 13,77,703 copies per publishing day. (Table 7.2) LANGUAGE WISE While going through Annual Statements filed for the year , it has been observed that periodicals were brought out in all principal languages of the country except Bodo. Language wise analysis states that Hindi periodicals have maintained a lead with 8,815 publications followed by English (1,409), Gujarati (1,016), Telugu (619), Urdu (539), Marathi (534), Odia (222), Bengali (179), Kannada (158), Tamil (150) and Malayalam (134). (Table 7.3) In circulation also, Hindi periodicals maintains their lead with a total circulation of 11,61,56,946 copies per publishing day followed by English (2,87,99,009), Gujarati (96,35,051), Marathi (82,97,679), Telugu (81,79,205), Urdu (80,08,806), Malayalam (67,37,016) and Odia (54,25,849). (Table 7.3)
2 358 The Press in India STATE/UT WISE Uttar Pradesh continued to maintain its lead with 3,458 periodicals; Delhi came second with 1,797 followed by Madhya Pradesh 1,778, Uttaranchal 1,611, Rajasthan 1,221, Gujarat 1,094 and Maharashtra 995. (Table 7.4) Uttar Pradesh remained on top position in terms of circulation also with a claim of 5,60,92,715 copies per publishing day followed by Delhi with 3,63,69,689 copies, Madhya Pradesh 1,77,80,850 copies, Maharashtra 1,75,32,364 copies, Uttrakhand 1,25,97,312 copies, Gujarat 05,63,696 copies, and Andhra Pradesh 1,04,12,374 copies per publishing day. (Table 7.4) CONTENTS The periodicals have been classified into 21 categories according to their contents as per total number of annual statements received for the year The periodicals which cover major topics fall under the category of NCA (News and Current Affairs 12,975), followed by AOC (231), SOW (Social Welfare 214), EDU (Education 189), LAC (Literary & Culture 132), MAH (Medicine & Health 110), AAH (Agriculture & Animal Husbandry 74) CHI (Children 69), ART (Arts 60), WOM (Women 60) and CAI (Commerce & Industry 55) etc. (Table 7.5) Weeklies and Monthlies maintained the leading trend in terms of coverage of matters pertaining to News and Current Affairs with 7,924 and 2,789 publications in numbers respectively. (Table 7.5) Periodicals were published in all major Indian languages except Bodo and Manipuri covering topics on news and current affairs Hindi periodicals continued to dominate the scene in the category of News and Current Affairs with 8,285 publications followed by Gujarati & English with 930 & 754 publications respectively. They continued to remain on top leaving aside rest of other categories such as topic on social welfare, religion and philosophy, literary and culture, etc. (Table 7.6) Circulation wise also the periodicals covering News and Current Affairs as the main topic remained on top with 18,14,76,817 copies followed by UNC (Unclassified 84,41,594) EDU (Education 35,73,010), SOW (Social Welfare 30,44,214) LAC (Literature & Culture 28,26,387) and WOM (Women 19,38,805). (Table 7.7)
3 Circulation of Weeklies and Other Periodicals 359 GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS There were 51 Government Publications, which filed annual statements for the year , out of which 38 belonged to the Central and 13 to the State Governments (Table 7.8). However, the actual number of publications brought out by the Central as well as State governments and their various Departments are much more higher Out of the 51 Government Publications, monthlies dominated the scene having 23 in number followed by quarterlies, weeklies, fortnightlies and daily having 04, 03, 02, and 01 publication respectively. Remaining 05 were of other periodicities. (Table 7.8) Language wise, the largest number of government publications were brought out in English (15) followed by Hindi (14), Telugu (07), Urdu (04), Bi-lingual (03) and Malayalam (02). (Table 7.9) CENTRAL GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS Out of 38 Central Government Publications; 14 were in English, 12 in Hindi, 04 in Urdu, 02 in Telugu, and 01 each in Konkani, Malayalam, Gujarati, Punjabi, Odia and Marathi. (Table 7.9) Out of the 38 Central Government Publications; 29 were published from Delhi followed by 03 from Maharashtra, 02 from A.P. and 01 each from Gujarat, Kerala, Rajasthan and Uttrakhand. (Table 7.10) STATE GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS There were 13 State Government Publications which filed their annual statements in Out of them 05 were in Telugu, 03 were in Bi-Lingual, 02 were in Hindi, 01 each were in Bengali, English and Malayalam. (Table 7.9) State-wise study shows that, 03 publications were from A.P., 02 each were from Kerala, M.P. and Telangana, 01 each from Delhi, Tamil Nadu, U.P. and West Bengal. (Table 7.10) LARGEST CIRCULATED GOVERNMENT PUBLICATION Central Government Employment News, English/Weekly published from Delhi by the Publications Division, M/o I&B, Government of India, had a circulation of 2,71,364 copies per publishing day.
