2 The French Pyrenees Tour Leaders: David Tattersfield Naturetrek Botanist David Morris Naturetrek Ornithologist Participants: Stephen Locke Nina Locke Al Parks David Whitelaw Eunice Robertson Stuart Robinson Pat Martin Bob Martin Carol Wood Heather Stockton Richard Dewing Venetia Stent Roger Parkes Pam Parkes Day 1 Saturday 8th June An early departure from Stansted meant that much of the day remained for our explorations. We arrived in Lourdes to steady rain and a cool 10 degrees and set off towards the mountains. After shopping for lunch in Luz-St-Sauveur, we drove through the old spa resort to the Pont Napoleon. Crag Martins wheeled below the bridge and the silver rosettes of Pyrenean Saxifrage Saxifraga longifolia and the endemic Ramonda myconi could be seen on the cliffs. At the hotel, we were met by our amiable hosts, Odile and Philippe, and after a quick change, set off up the valley for lunch by the river. Nearby, Pyrenean Lily Lilium pyrenaicum was in bud, with Cowslip Primula veris, Early Purple Orchid Orchis mascula, Twayblade Listera ovata and both purple and yellow Elderflowered Orchid Dactylorhiza sambucina scattered in the turf. A short walk along the road revealed Forked Spleenwort Asplenium septentrionale, on the rocks and in the shade of Hazel woodland, there was Baneberry, Actaea spicata, Bird s Nest Orchid Neottia nidus-avis, Sword-leaved Helleborine Cephalanthera longifolia and the three-lobed leaves of Hepatica nobilis. Much of the wood lay shattered by the huge avalanches that had tumbled from the cliffs during the winter. We moved on up the valley, glimpsing Dipper on the river and took a short circular walk around the little hamlet of Heas, over the attractive packhorse bridge. The temperature had dropped to 5 degrees and the cafe provided welcome drinks and shelter from the drizzle. This however soon cleared and it was not long before we saw our first Griffon Vultures. Indeed, the rest of the afternoon proved to be excellent for sightings and we totalled twenty Griffon, three Lammergeier, two Golden Eagle, two Honey Buzzard, Common Buzzard, Kestrel and Chough, flying high overhead. We returned to Gedre and enjoyed a delicious evening meal, before recording our finds and discussing the plan for the week ahead. Naturetrek April 14 1

3 Day 2 Sunday 9th June It was a very late season, almost everywhere in Europe and the Pyrenees was no exception. The region had received record snowfalls and colossal amounts still remained. It was clear that we would have to make significant changes to the week s itinerary. Today we set off down the valley, stopping several times to examine the roadside habitats. Numerous plants were recorded but the highlights included the deep blue Aquilegia vulgaris and the rare Round-leaved Restharrow Ononis rotundifolia. The group had morning coffee in Luz, while we stocked up for lunch and then we continued up to Bareges, where Wallcreeper had been reported on the wall of the cinema but we had no luck. We continued up the valley where Northern Wheatears were plentiful and we had good views of Yellowhammer and Linnet. On wet banks Primula farinosa and Large-flowered Butterwort Pinguicula grandiflora were prominent and a Slow Worm was seen. At Super Bareges, snow drifts prevented further progress and we pulled off the road under the Chairlift, where there was a little shelter from the drizzle. This proved an ideal spot for lunch, using the chairs as seats, and a good vantage point to survey the surroundings. We had hoped for Snowfinch here and three birds were observed at close quarters, as we ate. An unexpected surprise was, however, the four Rock Thrushes that were feeding in the turf nearby. The wet hillsides above us had fresh flowers of Green Hellebore Helleborus viridis, white Ranunculus pyrenaeus and large drifts of Daffodil Narcissus bicolor, each with its characteristic truncated perianth tube. Back down the valley we made a stop to photograph Oxlip Primula elatior, Solid-tubered Corydalis Corydalis solida, the endemic blue Pyrenean Squill Scilla liliohyacinthus and Yellow Anemone Anemone ranunculoides, all unexpected bonuses of the late season. A final roadside stop for St Bernard s Lily Anthericum liliago concluded a most interesting day. Day 3 Monday 10th June Early cloud slowly cleared to leave a beautiful sunny day. We made roadside stops along the Heas Valley, admiring the many Early Purple Orchids and adding Lesser Butterfly Orchid Plantanthera bifolia and Fragrant Orchid Gymnadenia conopsea to our list. Narcissus-flowered Anemone Anemone narcissiflora and Alpine Pasque Flower Pulsatilla alpina were flowering on steep shady banks with a variety of ferns and primroses, especially the early-flowering Hairy Primrose Primula hirsuta. After parking and distributing the lunch, we crossed the dam wall of the Barrage des Gloriettes. Spikes of White Asphodel Asphodelus albus were scattered across the hillsides and in damp areas the pendant bells of Pyrenean Snakeshead Fritillaria pyrenaica stole the show. Overhead were the usual Griffon Vulture, Chough and Alpine Chough with the odd Lammergeier, Golden Eagle and Short-toed Eagle. Everywhere, there were Black Redstart and Water Pipit, with their distinctive call and gliding flight and a group of nine Isard could be seen grazing below the cliffs. We crossed onto limestone with a different flora and had lunch in the shelter of a large boulder by the river. Daphne laureola was in full flower around the rocks and in wet flushes was an attractive combination of pink Primula farinosa and yellow Marsh Marigold. We continued up the valley a little way into the National Park passing lots of Narcissus bicolour, patches of Corydalis solida and stunning blue clumps of Trumpet Gentian Gentiana acaulis and Spring Gentian Gentiana verna. Some of the group returned the way we had come, while others crossed the bridge and took a slightly longer route. On rocky knolls, there were magnificent plants of Garland Flower Daphne cneorum, the forms of which, in this region, are more compact than is usual. 2 Naturetrek April 14

4 On one limestone boulder we were delighted to find tight cushions of Yellow Saxifrage Saxifraga aretioides, a rare plant of the Engeleria subsection of the genus, found here and in the Cordillera Cantabrica in northern Spain. It was a warm afternoon and we were in no particular hurry, eventually returning to the hotel around 7.00pm. Day 4 Tuesday 11th June A clear sunny morning saw us heading into the Ossoue Valley, the lower half of which is dominated by massive limestone cliffs. We stopped first by the river and made a short circular walk on an old trail, crossing the river again over a deep gorge. Silver rosettes of Pyrenean Saxifrage Saxifraga longifolia and Ramonda Ramonda myconi were seen on the boulders, a Swallowtail Butterfly flew by, the only one of the week and we had good views of Red Squirrel in the Hazels. As the day warmed up, Griffon Vultures started to appear, making use of rising thermals above the cliffs. A little further on, many Rush-leaved Daffodil Narcissus assoanus made an eye-catching display, alongside Mountain Kidney-vetch Anthyllis montana. We descended a track towards the river. We startled a Green Lizard, the western species of the complex, Lacerta bilineata but it returned to allow a little photography. By now the cliffs, opposite were becoming busy with twenty or so Griffon Vulture, four Lammergeier, two Golden Eagle and even a Red Kite and a Black Kite. In addition there were Crag Martin and many Chough, mostly the yellow-billed Alpine Chough. Eventually, we needed to eat, so we returned to the bus and found a grassy meadow, a short distance up the valley. Plants in the vicinity included the Daphne relative, Thymelaea calycina, some stunning Cowslip Primula veris and more of the sweetly-scented Narcissus assoanus. We then took the road up to the Ski-station above Gavarnie, stopping to observe Red-backed Shrike, in their usual locality. In the late afternoon and we returned to the hotel for drinks before dinner. Day 5 Wednesday 12th June At last, the weather looked settled and we were to enjoy a beautiful sunny and warm day. After our usual bird watching from the hotel, where we regularly saw Firecrest, Griffon Vulture, and occasionally Lammergeier, we set off for Gavarnie. The trail led us first to a viewpoint, where we had commanding views of the magnificent scenery, surrounding the Cirque. Among the smaller birds were Tree Pipit, Citril Finch, Goldfinch and Common Whitethroat. Onwards, a delightful path took us through meadows and forest, towards our goal. An interesting ground flora included Irish Spurge Euphorbia hyberna, Herb Paris Paris quadrifolia and Whorled Solomon s Seal Polygonatum verticillatum. As we climbed, we were able to observe some of the special inhabitants of the pine forest, including Goldcrest and Crested Tit. We scanned the cliffs for Wallcreeper, without success. During lunch in the Cirque we watched over one hundred Alpine Choughs circling overhead and several came very close in search of leftovers. After we had eaten, we adjourned to the hotel for refreshments, before the second half of the day s adventures. We followed an airy path, high above the valley, which threaded its way below the cliffs. Highlights of the walk included Long-leaved Butterwort Pinguicula longifolia, its long sticky flypaper leaves covered in the remains of insects, the trailing shoots of Pyrenean Yam Dioscorea pyrenaica and the pristine white flowers Pulsatilla alpina. Above our heads, on the cliffs, we had distant views of Alpine Accentor. The path ascended through forest and emerged in a green meadow at the Auberge de Pailla, our highest point at 1800m. 5 Ring Ouzel is a regular breeder in the junipers that dot the open hillsides and one was seen briefly. From here we followed a long zigzag path down into the valley. It was such an amazing day that some of us chose to linger in the sunshine at a quiet cafe, across the river. It had been a long but very rewarding day and we returned to our hotel, well satisfied with our efforts. Day 6 Thursday 13th June On a sunny morning we set off down the valley, stopping in Luz-St-Sauveur to replenish lunch supplies. We drove up through the spa town of Cauterets and the steep, forested, Val de Jeret, to the car park below Pont d Espagne and enjoyed a drink, as we took in the spectacle of the waterfalls and narrow gorge. To maximise our time in the upper valley and to save our legs, we took the chairlift. The short ride above the treetops gave us brief glimpses of the elusive Black Woodpecker and left only a short level walk to Lac de Gaube. The area is composed of granite and consequently has a very different flora from that of the limestone. Forests of Pine and Silver Fir dominate a landscape scarred by avalanche chutes and boulder screes. High cloud drifted in from the west and thick mist rose out of the valley, so by the time we reached the lake, only the shore was visible. We made use of the tables outside the cafe for lunch and retreated inside for drinks during a period of heavy rain, after which the views of the lake improved somewhat. It continued to rain steadily as we returned to the chairlift but abated to allow a circular walk in the valley, back to the minibuses. Thunderstorms echoed round the mountains but it was dry when we arrived back in Gedre, just before 5.00 pm. Day 7 Friday 14th June For our final day we drove up the Heas Valley towards the Cirque de Troumouse. The pasture on the way up was, in places, pink with Daphne cneorum. The dramatic setting of the Auberge du Maillet at 1837m invited a coffee stop and in any case the road beyond was blocked by snow. Walking up, following the road where we could and cutting corners, we came across some amazing plants, including Alpine Snowbell Soldanella alpina, Entire-leaved Primrose Primula integrifolia and the endemic Pyrenean Buttercup Ranunculus pyrenaeus, all in perfect condition in the sodden turf. Further up, patches of the deep-blue upright bells of Alpine Gentian Gentiana alpina kept the photographers busy. The car park was still buried under two metres of snow but where the snow had receded there were carpets of white Pyrenean Buttercup, a special feature of the acid turf in the region. After lunch, we returned down the valley, stopping at a meadow covered in Elder-flowered Orchid Dactylorhiza sambucina in yellow or purple. To round off the week, we took the road opposite the hotel, to the Plateau de Sauge, where we had a commanding view into the Cirque de Gavarnie. There were good views of Red-backed Shrike, Citril Finch and Serin but it will be the sheets of Marsh Marigold and Daffodil that will linger long in our memories. Day 8 Saturday 15th June We had enjoyed a great week in these magnificent mountains, greatly enhanced by the comfort of the hotel and the hospitality of our hosts. Thanks to Odile, we had a very early breakfast, before leaving for our 9.40 am flight from Lourdes back to Stansted. 4 Naturetrek April 14
