5 2 Introduction In January 2009, the LISS panel was presented a questionnaire about the ministers currently serving in the fourth cabinet Balkenende. Panel members were assigned to one of three groups on the basis of a random variable. One group was presented a photograph of the minister concerned when asked to assess this minister. A second group was presented a group photo on which the minister concerned was individually encircled. The third group was not presented any photographs while completing the questionnaire. In July 2009, the survey was repeated, in which the first question queried more personality characteristics than in January. There was also just one condition: the respondents were only shown a photograph of the minister concerned. This survey is repeated in January Following the collapse of the government in February, an extra measurement was conducted in March 2010 using an abbreviated version of the questionnaire. It was presented to a random part of the panel. In January 2011 the questionnaire was repeated, but then featuring the new ministerial team of the first Rutte government. The questionnaire was presented to 7,316 panel members, and it was completed by 5,225 (response percentage 71%). Changes with respect to the January 2010 measurement (bc10b) The question text belonging to variables bc10b166 to bc10b190 was changed. In January 2010 the text read: Below are a list of characteristics which you believe are important for a credible minister to have.' In January 2011, the word credible was replaced by good again, as was the case in July The associated variables therefore have been renamed as: bc11d051 to bc11d075. Also for the questions bc10b025 to bc10b050, the word credible was replaced by good. For this reason the names of these variables have been changed to bc11d251 to bc11d276. The phrasing of the fifteenth characteristic was changed from vision of the future to focused on the future. Because of the new ministerial team, the variables bc10b076 to bc10b155 were removed and replaced by bc11d191 to bc11d250. Decreasing trust in democratic governments wave 5 3/32

6 3 Codebook This codebook contains the questionnaire as fielded in the LISS panel. The variable names are printed in bold and correspond to the names in the dataset. The questionnaire routing is printed in italics for each variable concerned. Open: answer box; no limit to the length of the answer. String: answer box allowing a maximum number of characters (standard is 255). The range within which a respondent could provide an answer for numerical variables is printed in the codebook in italics if this range was not visible to the respondent.
