3 Page 3 of Introduction The purpose of this volume is to document the rules by which Lenovo product package labels must conform. Before reading this volume you should first read volume 1 (p/n 41U2997- Labeling Overview). It contains details on bar code printing and background information that pertains to all of the volumes in the Global Labeling series. 2. Definition The Product Package Label is a label which is affixed to the product package for a finished good, or components or parts consumed in Lenovo manufacturing processes. Its purpose is to allow the customers, business partners, and distributors easy identification of products and their configuration. This volume does not address FRU ( Field Replaceable Units) package labels. FRU are addressed in volume 6. 41U Requirements 3.1. Ground Rules for Lenovo 1. Every item manufactured by or for Lenovo must have a product package label. This includes machines, components, options, FRUs, features, etc. 2. There are 2 package labels used for Lenovo systems. Package label type #1 is the standard system product carton label, this label is used when the product ordered is a machine-type model. Package label type #2 is used in conjunction with Label #1 for CTO and Variant products that require customer configuration and other information. Examples of these labels can be seen in sections 5.1 & The Product Identification section at the top of System carton labels should reflect the brand type and model such as ThinkPad T41, or ThinkCentre T50p, the machine type model, and serial. See label example in section Product Regulatory Compliance Markings (UL, CE, NOM18, Russian GOST, KC, Ukraine, etc ) : System carton label compliance marking requirements: Each system carton label must show the compliance markings for which countries that the product is sold, and can be found on the Product Information label. These compliance marks are defined product-by-product in the Development Engineering Specification agency approval list. The markings must be present unless a deviation to omit the marking(s) is granted. When the certification ID number is required to be printed along with certification logo, the ID number must be compliance with the corresponding certification report, which is provided by Lenovo R&D or ODM R&D. Option carton label compliance marking requirements : Option carton labels should have compliance markings that apply to the countries to which the product is sold. To view regulatory compliance markings, go to volume 8. ( p/n 41U Special labels and symbols) 5. It is vital that the product identification (e.g. part number or machine type model) matches what the customer or business partner ordered. This permits the customer or business partner to easily reconcile their order. 6. The product package label must properly identify the Country of Origin. Country of Origin requirements are documented in volume 1 ( p/n 41U Labeling Overview). 7. Product package labels of any product manufactured under the control and responsibility of Lenovo must show the following statement : Manufactured by Lenovo for products manufactured by any Lenovo owned manufacturing facility, e.g. LIPC Manufactured for Lenovo for products manufactured by any Lenovo suppliers. Note: if there is not enough space to accommodate the entire statement, the word Manufactured may be abbreviated with Mfg. 8. Bar codes must be printed on the product package labels as specified in sections 3.2 and 3.3. See requirements for proper bar code printing in volume 1 ( p/n 41U Labeling Overview ).
4 Page 4 of For security reasons it may be necessary to hide product information during transportation with an overpack (or buff wrapping), so that only the shipping label is accessible. See Lenovo Spec C-B L. 10. Product descriptive information (e.g. memory size or processor speed) may be printed on the product package labels unless prohibited for security reasons (see previous bullet). 11. If empty boxes are purposely used to fill out a pallet or shipping container, each such empty box shall have a label affixed that says EMPTY BOX in large bold letters. No other labels should be affixed to such a box 12. Do not leave old labels on containers that are reused - always remove old unnecessary labels. 13. Do not hand write information on packaging labels, all information must be machine printed. 14. The recommended label format is portrait 5 inches by 6 inches (127 mm by 152 mm). Other formats (e.g. square or landscape) may be used if required by the package size. Do not use labels smaller than 1 inch by 3 inches (25 mm by 75 mm) for product package label applications. 15. A third party logo only can appear on a Lenovo product package under the following circumstances: a) The product is co-branded - meaning that it has corporate branding approval to use the Lenovo and third party logos together. b) the product is a third party option and is not an option that has been manufactured for Lenovo and which is then marketed with a Lenovo part number. 16. Comply with the country specific requirements outlined in volume 1 ( p/n 41U Labeling Overview ) Data Elements & Data Identifiers on The following data elements must appear on a product package label. They are required unless indicated differently. If a data identifier is listed in column 4, a bar code is required unless otherwise indicated in the Comments colum The Format of column 3 pertains to the format of the data element : a data element may be numeric only (= N), alphabetic only (= A) alpha-numeric (= AN). The numeric value that follows indicates the length of the data element, i.e. the number of characters. It may be a variable element within a certain range (x y) up to a maximum length ( y) or fixed length (y). The column indicating DI pertains to the data identifier that shall be used if a data element is bar coded. All Data Identifiers must be compliant to Lenovo Corporate Standard C-S L. Also see Global Labeling Guide volume 1 ( p/n 41U Labeling Overview ) for bar code printing rules.
5 Page 5 of 25 Data element Format DI Comments Product AN In large bold letters at the top of the label should appear: Identification and Serial Number 1. Marketing product name (e.g. ThinkPad R31) 1. Machine type-model, Part number, and/or Feature Code of the product 1. Serial number of the product, if the product is serialized 1. Permissible, but not required : additional information such as processor speed, memory etc. Box x of y N 1 3 /. REQUIRED IF the product or the order item consists of multiple boxes. N 1 3 The box number and total number of boxes should be specified by either Box X of Y or Box X / Note: do not print leading zeros! Configuration AN. REQUIRED IF the product is built or configured to order. Shall contain the configuration / features in sales nomenclature, as ordered by the customer, including quantity and description. Note 1 : this section is required only for configured hardware, i.e. the product is built or configured to order. Otherwise, this section should be omitted. Note 2 : if the number of configuration/features exceeds the dedicated space of the configuration section, a separate packing list shall be provided in an envelope affixed to the box adjacent to the product package label which lists the entire configuration. If such a list is provided, then section 2 should contain only a reference to the envelope. Refer to Vol.7 (p/n 41U Packing Lists) of the Global Labeling Guidelines for layout and contents of a packing list. Bar codes for : Machine type - model AN 7 31P REQUIRED IF the product is assigned a machine type-model. Top Bill Part Number AN 7 30P REQUIRED IF the product has a top bill part number assigned and can be ordered as such. Feature Code AN 4 19P REQUIRED IF the product has assigned a feature code and is ordered as such. Note 1: This does not relate to the feature codes of the configuration section. Note 2: If the feature code is not known at product packaging time (because the product is ordered later as part of a pick and pack operation ), then the feature code must be affixed as a separate label during the pick and pack operation. The feature code is important, because it is the identifier by which the customer orders the product. Having it on the product package permits the customer to reconcile the order. FFBM Part Number AN 7 1P REQUIRED IF the product is an MES. The FFBM (field feature bill of material) is associated with one or more manufacturing part numbers Part Number AN 7 1P or P REQUIRED IF the product is a component part or option, known and ordered solely under its part number. Note: parts for consumption in (Lenovo) manufacturing lines must be prefixed by data identifier P Program Number AN 7 1P REQUIRED IF the product is a software program Serial Number AN 7 S REQUIRED IF the product is serialized. Quantity N 1 Q REQUIRED IF the package contains more than one of the item. If specified, the bar code is also required.

Placement of label #1: When using only Package label #1, place the product package label in the upper right-hand corner of the side that is most likely to be facing out when the package is placed on a pallet. This will generally be the narrow side. Leave sufficient room from the corner so the label will not be covered up by shipping container packaging material such as corner posts. If the package is larg(length+depth+width is greater than 72 inches or approximately two meters), then do one of the following Placement of label #1 & label #2: When label #1 and label #2 are to be used (CTO or Variant), apply label #1 as described in 4.1 above. The 30P bar code is only required if needed by the LENOVO Geography that the product is shipped to, and if a revenue part number is assigned to the product. CTO and Variant products do not have revenue part numbers and this barcode should not be printed. EMEA is the primary geography using the 30P data element. 2. For Special Bid Variant products, the M/ T Model fields will use as the last 3 characters of the variant designation instead of the released CTO model. This is the orderable item. It is the Product ID field on the system unit label Brand Identification Product Brand Identification Print KC mark and the code for Korea model only Customer requested info
