Introduction EMM offers a complex suite of features. Select a vendor that simplifies management and enhances mobile functionality in your organization. This Research Is Designed For: Enterprises seeking to select a solution for Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM). Their EMM use case may include: Enhancing security and manageability for devices, applications, and content. This Research Will Help You: Understand what s new in the EMM market. Evaluate EMM vendors and products for your enterprise needs. Determine which products are most appropriate for particular use cases and scenarios. Implementing key technology as part of an enterprise mobility strategy. Enhancing the functionality of mobility in the organization, regardless of ownership model; bring your own device (BYOD), corporately owned business only (COBO), and corporately owned personally enabled (COPE) models can all benefit from parts of an EMM suite. 8

Executive summary Info-Tech evaluated 11 competitors in the enterprise mobility management market, including the following notable performers: Champions: AirWatch by VMware continues to innovate and add features that are making it an all-in-one end-user management suite. Citrix has a powerful standalone EMM product with XenMobile and increasing integration with its virtualization. IBM, with the well-known MaaS360 EMM suite, balances ease of use with breadth of features. MobileIron remains a champion pure-play EMM vendor with a comprehensive set of advanced features. Value Award: IBM s strong product rating earned it Info-Tech s Value Award. Gaps between prices are narrowing, but IBM offers the most functionality for a price comparable to that of other top vendors. Trend Setter Award: SOTI goes in a different direction than other vendors, innovating with Android instead of ios, and addressing industry-specific needs, while maintaining solid general enterprise EMM. Info-Tech Insight 1. MDM is a feature, not a product: In only a few years, mobile device management has gone from defining a market to a minor, non-differentiating feature among EMM suites. When choosing a vendor, focus on application management, content management, and other advanced features, rather than basic MDM. 2. Pure-play vendors are in the minority: EMM-only vendors are being acquired by vendors with broad product sets and deep pockets. The remaining pure-plays appear lower in our landscape in comparison with some of the largest vendors in technology, but their products are still innovating rapidly in order to differentiate themselves. 3. EMM-style management is spreading: Expect EMM to expand beyond mobile devices. After finding success with the power and flexibility of EMM, customers and vendors alike are racing toward a single management tool for mobile, Windows, OSX, and even the Internet of Things. 9

Market overview How it got here BlackBerry made smartphones into powerful tools for businesses, and pioneered the importance of central management of those devices. Later, consumer-focused smartphones and tablets also became powerful business tools, but lacked central management. Early MDM arose to add management capabilities across all mobile devices and platforms. Trends like BYOD emphasized the need for mobility management by increasing the variety and complexity of mobile devices. But do users really want their own devices controlled by IT? It has become clear that MDM is not enough. No matter who owns the device, it contains a mix of personal and corporate applications, documents, and other data. MDM vendors have evolved. They no longer only manage the devices, but the company applications that run on those devices, and the content within those applications. Enter the all-encompassing set of tools known as Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM). Where it s going EMM brings more options than ever. IT leaders will have to decide which aspects of EMM will fit the organization best. The ultimate goal of many mobile strategies is to enable access to corporate resources from any device and any location. EMM is positioned as a platform-neutral tool to help achieve that goal. To even better position themselves as the best route to device agnosticism, many EMM vendors are expanding beyond mobility. Starting with support for desktop operating systems primarily OSX and Windows 8 EMM will increasingly be able to handle any device thrown at it, no matter what platform it runs on or who owns it. Trends like wearable devices and the Internet of Things will further increase the number of devices and platforms requiring enterprise-grade management. Expect to see EMM vendors racing to innovate and find their place in a world overflowing with devices, applications, and data. As the market evolves, capabilities that were once cutting edge become default and new functionality becomes differentiating. Basic MDM has become a Table Stakes capability and should no longer be used to differentiate solutions. Instead focus on advanced application management, content management, and the separation of work from personal to get the best fit for your requirements. 10

EMM vendor selection / knock-out criteria: market share, mind share, and broad capabilities Device management is no longer enough. The vendors included in this Vendor Landscape go beyond MDM to offer a key technology piece in a comprehensive mobility strategy. Most organizations require an integrated suite of products that offer broad functionality, rather than single-purpose tools. The vendors listed here met these criteria. For this Vendor Landscape, Info-Tech focused on those vendors that offer broad capabilities across major mobile platforms and that have a strong market presence and/or reputational presence among mid and large sized enterprises. Included in this Vendor Landscape: AirWatch by VMware. A well-known vendor that continues to offer a comprehensive feature set. BlackBerry. Increasing cross-platform functionality has made BES a viable EMM suite. Citrix. XenMobile is an innovative product with increasing integration with Citrix s other products. Good. Rounding out its product suite has helped Good position itself to provide general-purpose EMM. IBM. Fiberlink has long been a top EMM contender, and has thrived after its acquisition by IBM. Microsoft. Rapidly improving EMM functionality has kept Microsoft s Intune in the Landscape. MobileIron. A recognizable vendor with premium features, MobileIron has held its ground against larger vendors. SAP. A relatively long history in MDM has allowed SAP to make the transition to full-featured EMM. 16 The Info-Tech EMM Value Index What is a Value Score? The Value Score indexes each vendor s product offering and business strength relative to its price point. It does not indicate vendor ranking. Vendors that score high offer more bang-for-the-buck (e.g. features, usability, stability, etc.) than the average vendor, while the inverse is true for those that score lower. Price-conscious enterprises may wish to give the Value Score more consideration than those who are more focused on specific vendor/product attributes. Champion On a relative basis, IBM maintained the highest Info-Tech Value Score TM of the vendor group. Vendors were indexed against IBM s performance to provide a complete, relative view of their product offerings Average Score: *The vendor declined to provide pricing and publicly available pricing could not be found. 17 Table Stakes represent the minimum standard; without these, a product doesn t even get reviewed The Table Stakes Feature App Distribution Management Group, Policy, & Inventory Mgmt. What it is: App portal, visibility into installed apps, pushing required apps, and volume purchasing. Restrict access, features, or attachments. Integration with policy compliance. Administer policies and configuration by directory-defined group. Dashboards, reporting. What does this mean? The products assessed in this Vendor Landscape TM meet, at the very least, the requirements outlined as Table Stakes. Many of the vendors go above and beyond the outlined Table Stakes, some even do so in multiple categories. This section aims to highlight the products capabilities in excess of the criteria listed here. Hardware & Browser Mgmt. Location Services Security MDM level control over device features. Browser control and web filtering. Locate managed devices to display on a map to admins or users. Apply / enforce security policies, remote wipe, jailbreak detection, encryption, and compliance. If Table Stakes are all you need from your EMM solution, the only true differentiator for the organization is price. Otherwise, dig deeper to find the best price to value for your needs. 17

Advanced Features are the capabilities that allow for granular market differentiation Scoring Methodology Info-Tech scored each vendor s features offering as a summation of its individual scores across the listed advanced features. Vendors were given one point for each feature the product inherently provided. Some categories were scored on a more granular scale with vendors receiving half points. 21 When management focuses on apps rather than devices, choose a vendor with strong mobile application management Application management is a key component of EMM. All vendors have basic app distribution, but some add exemplary additional functionality App management Why Scenarios? In reviewing the products included in each Vendor Landscape TM, certain use cases come to the forefront. Whether those use cases are defined by applicability in certain locations, relevance for certain industries, or as strengths in delivering a specific capability, Info- Tech recognizes those use cases as Scenarios, and calls attention to them where they exist. Exemplary Performers AirWatch s customizable enterprise app store offers a similar look and feel across all devices even PCs and Macs. The AirWatch marketplace lists apps compatible with the EMM suite, including AirWatch s own collection of applications. A Software development kit (SDK) and app wrapping aid with app development. Good Technology s app store rivals public app stores with features like integrated ratings and reviews. The Good Developer Network provides a community and marketplace for custom apps, alongside app wrapping, an SDK, and IBM MobileFirst Platform integration. MobileIron pioneered the concept of a connected ecosystem of managed apps as an alternative to locking down devices or developing containers. It uses proprietary technology for wrapping and an SDK to enable the ecosystem, alongside a collection of thirdparty apps designed to work with MobileIron. For an explanation of how Scenarios are determined, see Information Presentation Scenarios in the Appendix. 21

Strong mobile content management enhances mobile productivity Some vendors stand out in enabling users to manipulate documents on mobile devices, while IT keeps documents safe Content management Why Scenarios? In reviewing the products included in each Vendor Landscape TM, certain use cases come to the forefront. Whether those use cases are defined by applicability in certain locations, relevance for certain industries, or as strengths in delivering a specific capability, Info- Tech recognizes those use cases as Scenarios, and calls attention to them where they exist. Exemplary Performers AirWatch was an early leader in mobile content management with its Secure Content Locker. It is a powerful content management solution in its own right, with built-in editing, custom branding, integration with other cloud repositories, and version control. Citrix s ShareFile, included with XenMobile, is a powerful cloud file sharing application made strong by EMM integration. It is flexible with respect to where content is stored, and editing can be done within ShareFile or Citrix s own editor without compromising security. MobileIron s Docs@Work integrates with attachments, even when using native clients. It works with most cloud repositories, and enables access to on-premise resources without a separate VPN. In-app editing is available, and the AppConnect ecosystem opens up other editing options. For an explanation of how Scenarios are determined, see Information Presentation Scenarios in the Appendix. 22

Support for desktop platforms and Android fragmentation differentiates vendors Every EMM vendor supports ios, but support for other platforms is hit and miss. 24 IBM s MaaS360 emphasizes ease of use without sacrificing functionality Champion Product: Employees: Headquarters: Website: Founded: Presence: MaaS ,000 Armonk, NY IBM.com 1911 NYSE: IBM 3 year TCO for this solution falls into pricing tier 7, between $100,000 and $250,000 $1 $1M+ Pricing provided by vendor Overview IBM acquired MDM champion Fiberlink late in Throughout 2014, IBM has integrated the MaaS360 EMM product into its MobileFirst initiatives, while continuing to add new features and functionality. Strengths Integration with other IBM products is being introduced to MaaS360. For example, integration with IBM MobileFirst Platform Foundation (formerly Worklight) further increases mobile app development capabilities. Previously a cloud-only product, MaaS360 is now available as a cost-effective on-premise deployment. MaaS360 continues to be praised for its ease of use and an extremely quick deployment. Challenges With the acquisition by IBM, MaaS360 is now one product among many. Integrating with other IBM products introduces complexity to a solution that focuses on simplicity, and can drive up costs. The Secure Productivity Suite contains , a browser, and an application launcher. Each can be purchased separately by the organization, but are accessed in one suite by the user. Those looking for separate applications for each function will find this container approach less flexible than other vendors ecosystems. 24

AirWatch by VMware is thriving in its new home Champion Product: Employees: Headquarters: Website: Founded: Presence: AirWatch by VMware 16,800 Palo Alto, CA air-watch.com 1998 NYSE: VMW 3 year TCO for this solution falls into pricing tier 7, between $100,000 and $250,000 $1 $1M+ Pricing provided by vendor Overview AirWatch has thrived in its new home at VMware. Since being acquired in early 2014, the company has continued to innovate, and integrations with VMware s portfolio are further strengthening its EMM offerings. Strengths The AirWatch-provided ecosystem of user applications is growing, providing many mobile functions in a fully managed environment. AirWatch was an early leader in mobile content management, and its Content Locker remains strong, keeping up with pure-play cloud file sharing vendors. Management of traditional desktop operating systems is a focus, providing all-in-one management of endpoints. The user interface is intuitive despite a wealth of features. Challenges Deployment options are plentiful. Flexibility is a strength, but some organizations will require assistance choosing from the many options available. Only basic telecom expense management is included, and AirWatch does not offer advanced expense management features such as split billing. Some of the most powerful features require convincing users to adopt non-native AirWatch-provided applications. 26

AirWatch should be on almost every shortlist Vendor Landscape Product Vendor Overall Features Usability Afford. Arch. Overall Viability Strategy Reach Channel Options for Separating Work and Personal Value Index Ecosystem: A collection of EMMmanaged apps that can only share data with each other, but reside alongside personal apps. 28 Citrix remains a top EMM vendor Champion Product: Employees: Headquarters: Website: Founded: Presence: XenMobile 9,200+ Santa Clara, CA citrix.com 1989 NASDAQ: CTXS 3 year TCO for this solution falls into pricing tier 7, between $100,000 and $250,000 $1 $1M+ Pricing provided by vendor Overview Since purchasing Zenprise in 2013, Citrix has incorporated enterprise mobility management as a key part of its product portfolio. Integration with other Citrix products has been improving quickly, and is now a differentiator for XenMobile. Strengths A strong ecosystem of Citrix mobile applications work seamlessly with XenMobile and with each other. Increasing integration with other Citrix products, such as their well-known virtualization offerings, further highlight advantages to adopting multiple enduser computing products from a single vendor. Sharefile, a Champion-level file sharing product, is included and integrated with XenMobile. The admin interface in XenMobile 10.0 is a major improvement over previous versions. Challenges Although XenMobile is a capable mobility management product on its own, some of the most impressive functionality requires deeper investment in Citrix s ecosystem, such as NetScaler for security and single sign on (SSO). XenMobile does not manage OSX devices yet, but has planned support for

MobileIron s razor-focus on EMM has paid off Champion Product: Employees: Headquarters: Website: Founded: Presence: The MobileIron Platform 700+ Mountain View, CA mobileiron.com 2007 NASDAQ: MOBL 3 year TCO for this solution falls into pricing tier 7, between $100,000 and $250,000 $1 $1M+ Pricing provided by vendor Overview One of the few vendors left that focuses solely on EMM, MobileIron has continued to innovate and develop its own technology to maintain its position as an EMM leader. Strengths MobileIron offers a comprehensive set of advanced features, most of which are internally developed and patented, though it also has a large collection of third-party applications and services integrated into its platform. Help desk automation and security are particular areas of focus, with differentiating features such as remote view of ios devices and secure multi-user profiles. A recent IPO will give MobileIron resources needed to compete against the larger vendors that now dominate the EMM landscape. Challenges The larger companies that have entered the EMM landscape have pushed MobileIron left in the vendor landscape. As a pure-play vendor, MobileIron will have to continue innovating and adding new functionality to keep up. MobileIron is one of the most expensive EMM suites, especially when going beyond basic device and application management. However, consider the total cost of integration and maintenance when choosing a vendor. 30

Expense Mgmt. Help Desk & Automation Platforms & Desktop Support Info-Tech Recommends: MobileIron is positioned as a premium EMM choice. Initial and ongoing costs can be higher than other vendors, but its feature set, strength in security, and future-proof strategy can be worth the cost for organizations with complex EMM needs. 31

BlackBerry Enterprise Service has improved its cross-platform management with some standout features Market Pillar Product: Employees: Headquarters: Website: Founded: Presence: BlackBerry Enterprise Service (BES) ~ 7,000 Waterloo, ON blackberry.com 1984 NASDAQ: BBRY 3 year TCO for this solution falls into pricing tier 7, between $100,000 and $250,000 $1 $1M+ Pricing provided by vendor Overview BlackBerry s renewed focus on enterprise security is starting to pay off after years of losing ground to competitors on several fronts. BES12 is finally available, and brings many improvements that make it a viable cross-platform EMM solution. Strengths An improved upgrade path from older versions of BES addresses the criticism that switching to another vendor is easier than upgrading. BlackBerry remains a leader in security, with more security approvals and certificates than any other vendor. Integrating the acquisition of Movirtu, WorkLife by BlackBerry directly tackles the issue of splitting mobile costs into separate work and personal bills. On telecom providers where it is available, WorkLife can fill a frustrating EMM void. Challenges Despite newfound strength, BlackBerry finds itself in a position where many of its customers have moved on to other mobile hardware and management vendors. Gaining ground again will be a challenge, but the company is making strong efforts to regain profitability. Content management is largely accomplished via partnerships and integrations rather than BlackBerry s own technology. 32

BlackBerry s future as a company is still uncertain, but existing customers looking to expand to cross-platform management should consider sticking with BES. 33

Microsoft has been improving Intune quickly Market Pillar Product: Employees: Headquarters: Website: Founded: Presence: Microsoft Intune 128,000 Redmond, WA microsoft.com 1975 NASDAQ: MSFT 3 year TCO for this solution falls into pricing tier 8, between $250,000 and $500,000 $1 $1M+ Pricing solicited from public sources Overview Microsoft has introduced the Enterprise Mobility Suite, which includes Azure Active Directory Premium, Azure Rights Management, and Intune. The main EMM product is Intune, but integration with Microsoft SCCM can increase functionality. Strengths Microsoft is the only vendor that offers document management that keeps control of documents while editing them in native Microsoft Office mobile applications. Microsoft is unlikely to partner with other EMM vendors and lose this key advantage. Microsoft now includes a subset of Intune s features in Office 365 at no additional cost, giving many organizations a way to test Intune for free. Challenges Intune s advanced feature set has improved throughout 2014, but still lags behind leading EMM products. Microsoft focuses on integration with Microsoft products, with few integrations or partnerships with third parties. When not included with other products, Intune is one of the most expensive EMM suites available. 34

SOTI offers some unique features Innovator Product: Employees: Headquarters: Website: Founded: Presence: SOTI MobiControl 400+ Mississauga, ON soti.net 1995 Privately held 3 year TCO for this solution falls into pricing tier 7, between $100,000 and $250,000 $1 $1M+ Pricing provided by vendor Overview SOTI has a long history in device management, and remains privately held in the face of competition from massive vendors entering the space. MobiControl stands out with several features that are unique to SOTI. Strengths SOTI is one of the only vendors to take Android fragmentation head-on by partnering directly with over fifty Android device manufacturers to increase enterprise manageability. Remote support and control features are stronger than any other vendor s, especially on Android devices. MobiControl contains some differentiating geo-aware features, such as distracted driving reduction features and distributing documents by location. Challenges SOTI has a powerful SDK for integrating custom applications with MobiControl, but automatic app wrapping can only be achieved via a partnership with Mocana. Despite a long history and powerful product, SOTI lacks name recognition as a full-featured EMM vendor. SOTI is historically recognized for its support of ruggedized devices rather than consumer devices. It continues to differentiate with industry-specific features, but is working towards growing its footprint and recognition in the enterprise for general EMM. 36

Good has broadened the flexibility of its EMM offerings and remains focused on security Innovator Product: Employees: Headquarters: Website: Founded: Presence: Good Enterprise Mobility Management Suites 850+ Sunnyvale, CA good.com 1996 Privately held 3 year TCO for this solution falls into pricing tier 7, between $100,000 and $250,000 $1 $1M+ Pricing provided by vendor Overview Good has been providing mobility management solutions for over a decade. Recently, it acquired MDM vendor BoxTone, allowing it to expand the breadth of its feature set. The later acquisition of Fixmo increased Good s depth in security features. Strengths Good has addressed gaps in its feature set, and expanded the diversity of deployment options to include cloud hosting, making it a viable option in organizations of different sizes and use cases. Through its acquisition of Macheen and a partnership with DataMi, Good will offer bill splitting, allowing for better separation of work and personal costs. Split billing is only available on some carriers, but is a powerful feature that is not yet common among EMM vendors. Security remains one of Good s main strengths. Challenges Good is best known for its secure container approach to mobility management, and potential customers need to be made aware of other options that are available from Good. Formerly an MDM market pillar, in this new world of massive vendors incorporating EMM, Good has the challenge of being thrust into the role of an innovator. Pure-play vendors may struggle against the raw wealth of resources behind larger vendors products. 38

SAP s EMM has increasing integration with SAP s ecosystem Emerging Player Product: Employees: Headquarters: Website: Founded: Presence: SAP Mobile Secure Suite 66,500 Walldorf, Germany SAP.com 1972 NYSE: SAP 3 year TCO for this solution falls into pricing tier 6, between $50,000 and $100,000 $1 $1M+ Pricing provided by vendor Overview SAP Mobile Secure is a cloud-based EMM suite that includes MDM, application management, and content management. Onpremise solutions are available as well, including early MDM frontrunner, Afaria, for on-premise MDM. Strengths SAP is a large vendor with many global partners for sales and support. Current SAP customers will benefit from integration with other SAP products, and future integrations will further increase the value of staying within SAP s ecosystem. The suite s enterprise app store is attractive and includes some advanced features, such as app bundling. Challenges Advanced features are lacking compared to vendors with a stronger focus on EMM. Although the starting price is low, per-device (rather than per-user) pricing will drive the cost up for organizations where users have multiple devices. Prospective customers will find it difficult to find up-to-date information on SAP s website. 40

SAP offers strong document management Vendor Landscape Product Vendor Overall Features Usability Afford. Arch. Overall Viability Strategy Reach Channel Options for Separating Work and Personal Ecosystem: A collection of vendor-provided and EMMmanaged apps that reside alongside personal apps. SAP can manage company apps separately from personal apps, and control sharing between company apps. Value Index 94 Features 5 th out of 11 Applications Containerization Document Mgmt. Expense Mgmt. Help Desk & Automation Platforms & Desktop Support Info-Tech Recommends: SAP s products have a relatively long history in MDM and EMM. However, the company has been struggling to keep up with more innovative EMM vendors. Existing SAP customers with simple needs will benefit most from SAP s EMM products. 41

Sophos is rapidly improving to master EMM basics Emerging Player Product: Employees: Headquarters: Website: Founded: Presence: Sophos Mobile Control 2,200 Abington, UK sophos.com 1985 Privately held 3 year TCO for this solution falls into pricing tier 6, between $50,000 and $100,000 $1 $1M+ Pricing provided by vendor Overview Sophos got into the mobility management space later than other vendors after acquiring Dialogs in Mobile Control improves as rapidly as competitors, but remains a step behind. Strengths Security is a focus for Sophos, and integration with its security databases and analysis features allows for more effective web traffic and app filtering than most other vendors. The admin interface is attractive, easy to use, and is set to improve further in the next release. A self service portal, automated alerts, and screen sharing can enhance help desk s support for mobile devices. Mobile Control has the lowest price of the vendors evaluated here. Challenges Sophos can enhance security of individual applications and documents, but it does not provide a way of creating a secure ecosystem of connected applications. Separating work and personal is not as smooth as it is with other EMM solutions. Mobile Control does not yet manage OSX or Windows 8 devices. Sophos concentrates on mastering EMM basics and integrated security rather than attempting to keep up with the cutting-edge innovations of larger or more focused vendors. 42

Sophos Mobile Control is a bargain for organizations with simple needs Vendor Landscape Product Vendor Overall Features Usability Afford. Arch. Overall Viability Strategy Reach Channel Options for Separating Work and Personal Value Index Container (Light): A single app or portal that leads to a container where various work-related functions reside, walled off from personal apps. Note that Mobile Control contains only basic enrolment, support, and an app store, rather than a full collection of applications. 99 Features 2 nd out of 11 Applications Containerization Document Mgmt. Expense Mgmt. Help Desk & Automation Platforms & Desktop Support Info-Tech Recommends: Some advanced functionality is missing in Sophos s feature set, but for organizations with simple needs, a lower-than-average price for strong security and basic EMM can be the right choice. 43

Symantec is going through changes, and its EMM is currently a risky choice Emerging Player Product: Employees: Headquarters: Website: Founded: Presence: Symantec Mobility: Suite 20,000+ Mountain View, CA symantec.com 1982 NASDAQ: SYMC The vendor declined to provide pricing, and publicly available pricing could not be found $1 $1M+ Overview Symantec thrived in a world of desktops, but had less impact in an increasingly mobile landscape. Perhaps as a result, the company has announced plans to split into two public companies. Its Mobility Suite will reside with the security-focused side of the split. Strengths Symantec s security focus puts it in a better position than most EMM vendors to offer protection from risky apps and websites. A per-user pricing option and a new free MDM for existing Symantec customers will make the Mobility Suite a cost-effective choice in some organizations. Thanks to some key acquisitions, Symantec has strong app wrapping capabilities (via acquisition of Nukona), and a fullfeatured container (via acquisition of NitroDesk, creators of the popular TouchDown client). Challenges Symantec now supports Windows Phone, but PC and Mac management are provided in a separate product (Symantec Endpoint Management). Some advanced security features, such as proactive app risk reporting, are only available for Android. Document management is very basic, lacking editing capabilities or built-in integration with corporate document repositories. Restructuring, layoffs, and CEO turnover may make potential customers concerned for Symantec s future in mobility. Symantec has not been afraid to drop products during tough times before. 44

Symantec can enable a protected app ecosystem, but lacks other key features Vendor Landscape Product Vendor Overall Features Usability Afford. Arch. Overall Viability Strategy Reach Channel Options for Separating Work and Personal Value Index Ecosystem: A collection of EMM-managed apps that can only share data with each other, but reside alongside personal apps. Symantec enables controlled data sharing via app wrapping, partners in its Symantec Sealed program, and vendor-provided apps. N/A Features The vendor declined to provide pricing, and publicly available pricing could not be found. Applications Containerization Document Mgmt. Expense Mgmt. Help Desk & Automation Platforms & Desktop Support Info-Tech Recommends: A free MDM option for existing Symantec customers may entice some organizations to try it, but those looking for full EMM should consider other options first. 45

Vendor Landscape Methodology: Overview Info-Tech s Vendor Landscapes are research materials that review a particular IT market space, evaluating the strengths and abilities of both the products available in that space, as well as the vendors of those products. These materials are created by a team of dedicated analysts operating under the direction of a senior subject matter expert over a period of six weeks. Evaluations weigh selected vendors and their products (collectively solutions ) on the following eight criteria to determine overall standing: Features: The presence of advanced and market-differentiating capabilities. Usability: The intuitiveness, power, and integrated nature of administrative consoles and client software components. Affordability: The three-year total cost of ownership of the solution. Architecture: The degree of integration with the vendor s other tools, flexibility of deployment, and breadth of platform applicability. Viability: The stability of the company as measured by its history in the market, the size of its client base, and its financial performance. Strategy: The commitment to both the market-space, as well as to the various sized clients (small, mid-sized, and enterprise clients). Reach: The ability of the vendor to support its products on a global scale. Channel: The measure of the size of the vendor s channel partner program, as well as any channel strengthening strategies. Evaluated solutions are plotted on a standard two by two matrix: Champions: Both the product and the vendor receive scores that are above the average score for the evaluated group. Innovators: The product receives a score that is above the average score for the evaluated group, but the vendor receives a score that is below the average score for the evaluated group. Market Pillars: The product receives a score that is below the average score for the evaluated group, but the vendor receives a score that is above the average score for the evaluated group. Emerging Players: Both the product and the vendor receive scores that are below the average score for the evaluated group. Info-Tech s Vendor Landscapes are researched and produced according to a strictly adhered to process that includes the following steps: Vendor/product selection Information gathering Vendor/product scoring Information presentation Fact checking Publication This document outlines how each of these steps is conducted. 47

Vendor Landscape Methodology: Vendor/Product Selection & Information Gathering Info-Tech works closely with its client base to solicit guidance in terms of understanding the vendors with whom clients wish to work and the products that they wish evaluated; this demand pool forms the basis of the vendor selection process for Vendor Landscapes. Balancing this demand, Info-Tech also relies upon the deep subject matter expertise and market awareness of its Senior, Lead, and Principle Research Analysts to ensure that appropriate solutions are included in the evaluation. As an aspect of that expertise and awareness, Info-Tech s analysts may, at their discretion, determine the specific capabilities that are required of the products under evaluation, and include in the Vendor Landscape only those solutions that meet all specified requirements. Information on vendors and products is gathered in a number of ways via a number of channels. Initially, a request package is submitted to vendors to solicit information on a broad range of topics. The request package includes: A detailed survey. A pricing scenario (see Vendor Landscape Methodology: Price Evaluation and Pricing Scenario, below). A request for reference clients. A request for a briefing and, where applicable, guided product demonstration. These request packages are distributed approximately twelve weeks prior to the initiation of the actual research project to allow vendors ample time to consolidate the required information and schedule appropriate resources. During the course of the research project, briefings and demonstrations are scheduled (generally for one hour each session, though more time is scheduled as required) to allow the analyst team to discuss the information provided in the survey, validate vendor claims, and gain direct exposure to the evaluated products. Additionally, an end-user survey is circulated to Info-Tech s client base and vendor-supplied reference accounts are interviewed to solicit their feedback on their experiences with the evaluated solutions and with the vendors of those solutions. These materials are supplemented by a thorough review of all product briefs, technical manuals, and publicly available marketing materials about the product, as well as about the vendor itself. Refusal by a vendor to supply completed surveys or submit to participation in briefings and demonstrations does not eliminate a vendor from inclusion in the evaluation. Where analyst and client input has determined that a vendor belongs in a particular evaluation, it will be evaluated as best as possible based on publicly available materials only. As these materials are not as comprehensive as a survey, briefing, and demonstration, the possibility exists that the evaluation may not be as thorough or accurate. Since Info-Tech includes vendors regardless of vendor participation, it is always in the vendor s best interest to participate fully. All information is recorded and catalogued, as required, to facilitate scoring and for future reference. 48
