1 Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas de El Salvador History: The Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas (UCA) was created in September of 1965 in a context of optimist in a development decade. The University was created by a group of Roman Catholic families who appealed to the Salvadoran Government and to the Society of Jesus to create another educative alternative. HISTORY AND FACTS The Social of Jesus for several years contemplated the possibility to establish a university with two important points. First one, to be a public utility corporation whose administration is responsible of board directors. Second to be oriented towards economic and social development of the region. The founders chose the name of the institution of Jose Simeón Cañas as a historic symbol of independence in El Salvador. The UCA is a university of Christian inspiration to the service of the Salvadoran and Central American societies, with a strong committed for the social change. This social change the university promote through teaching, research and projects. 2 The UCA education system is according the Salvadorian higher education law; administrated by Ministry of Education (Ministerio de Educación MINED). The UCA use the Valuation Units VU (Unidades Valorativas UV) to measure the weight of a subject and also the commitment required of the student. The Valuation Units in each signature include the time class (teaching), the laboratory practice, discussion and the personal work with the student. Grading Scale (Coeficiente de Unidades de Mérito CUM) The Grading Scale obtains divide the Merits Units by the total of the Valuations Units in each signature. To calculate GS: a) Only will take the last grade obtain, in the signature studied according by the respective studied plan. b) It will take into de account the subjects used to grant equivalence either internal or external. To graduate, the student must have the next grading scale: a) Under-graduate: cannot be less than 7.0 b) Master degree: cannot be less than 7.5 c) Faculty Degree: according by the Ministry of Education d) PH.D: cannot be less than 8.0 For AMIDILA: ALERT: the duration of the AMIDILA scholarship does not necessarily corresponds to what will be the actual duration of the Bachelor, Master or PhD programme you will enroll to. 4 All the programs at the University are taught in Spanish. Spanish courses for foreigners The School of Languages at UCA offers courses in Spanish. The duration of each course is 40 hours. The Spanish program is composed of nine levels, three basic, three intermediate and three advanced courses. The student may take a placement test that is administered at the time of registration. For the academic year, each course costs $68.00, and the placement test is $4.00. DEGREE SEEKING ADMISSION AND AMIDILA MOBILTY PROJECT Degree seeking candidates: 4 Admission to the University: the University will consider your AMIDILA application form as a double application including your request for getting admitted AND the request for receiving an AMIDILA scholarship. So, you will not need to submit any other application in order to get admitted. This nevertheless means that the admission and the AMIDILA scholarship are strongly connected: if you get an AMIDILA scholarship you also get the admission BUT if you do not get an AMIDILA scholarship at the same way you will not get admission regardless you receive a positive academic evaluation. - Full Bachelor: you must already hold a Secondary education title by the time of submitting your application form. - Full Master: you must be either a final year student who will receive by June/July 2014 the Bachelor degree or already hold your Bachelor degree. You must check that your Bachelor degree allows you to embark on a Master level studies. Professional diplomas for instance may not be eligible. In the case your title is eligible for getting access at Master level study you will not be required to do any preparatory years. HOW TO PREPARE YOUR AMIDILA MOBILITY PROJECT Credits seeking/exchange Undergraduate and Master: First of all consult our AMIDILA Academic offer. You will find in any Info Sheet of the BA/MA programs we offer a link to the BA/MA programme website Consult the Study Plan and choose the subjects of your interest. Check with your Home University if these subjects are compatible with your Home Study Plan and will be therefore recognized. Fill out the AMIDILA Tentative Study Plan using the template provided. 5 Payment system for university studies For students in undergraduate programs, UCA has established a system of payment by differentiated fees, which consists of establishing your payment based on an assessment of the socioeconomic conditions of your household. The quota is within a reasonable pay scale that combines both the high cost of quality higher education with the financial resources of the families of the students. For students who join UCA, the value of tuition, per cycle, is $82.00 and monthly dues are $86.00, $110.00, $134.00, $158.00, $182.00, $206.00, $230.00, $254.00, and $ The optional fee is $ per month. This last installment is also applied to those students who fail to submit an individual socioeconomic survey, the date specified. In addition, a fee for use of laboratories is paid. These rates apply only to undergraduate programs. Masters and PhD programs have different rates. Housing The University has no facilities on campus, but there are shelters and university residences around the campus. The approximate cost of these homes is $ per month, which includes room and board. "Only rooms" are also available within walking distance from the University. Students can find a furnished room for $ to $ monthly all-inclusive. Unfurnished rooms for $80.00 to $ are also available. Rent A house of 3 or 4 bedrooms costs from $ to $300.00, and can be rented by a group of people. The rent does not include utilities. Laundry Most sites charge $5.00 for washing clothes (15 pieces). Food, water and cleaning supplies. Depending on the type of diet, students spend from $ to $ per month per person.
