1 School of Innovative Technologies and Engineering Foundation Access Course for Undergraduate Programme (Science and Technology) August 2011 VERSION 2.2 FACUP University of Technology, Mauritius La Tour Koenig, Pointe aux Sables, Mauritius Tel: (230) Fax: (230) website:
2 Foundation Access Course for Undergraduate Programme A. PROGRAMME INFORMATION Applications are received from many school leavers at UTM every year but unfortunately their applications are rejected due to the fact that these applicants do not meet the minimum entry requirements to enrol into our diploma or degree programmes. As per the Tertiary Education Commission and part of a policy of the Government for increasing and widening access to tertiary education in the country, UTM is the first university in Mauritius to propose the Foundation Access Course for Undergraduate Programme (FACUP). NOTE : The Foundation Access Course for Undergraduate Programme is not equivalent to the Cambridge Higher School Certificate and students are advised to take the Cambridge HSC examinations separately on their own. B. PROGRAMME AIM The FACUP is a one-year full-time course and upon completion the candidate may be allowed to join the first year of an undergraduate programme from the School of Innovative Technologies and Engineering. The main aim of this Foundation course is to help those applicants with only one A Level and 4 O Levels including English to pursue higher education at UTM. C. PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES At the end of the course, the student will acquire the extra qualification to be eligible for our diplomas/degrees. Part I D. GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS The entry requirements for this course are: At least 4 Credit at GCE O Level including a credit in English and any 1 A Level. E. PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTS Not Applicable. F. PROGRAMME DURATION AND MODE The Foundation Access Course Undergraduate Programme is a one year full time course but can be run also after office hours. G. TEACHING AND LEARNING STRATEGIES Lectures, Tutorials and Practicals Class Tests and Assignments Project Structured Discussions & Self Directed Study H. STUDENT SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE Academic tutoring: weekly 2 hours session between the students and the lecturer. Guidance will be provided on all aspects of the programmes through regular meetings with Programme Director and Programme Coordinator. I. ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS As per UTM s Regulations and Policy. 2
3 J. CREDIT SYSTEM All modules will be run over two semesters and examinations will be scheduled at the end of the academic year. Credits will be earned at the end of the academic year. K. STUDENT PROGRESS AND ASSESSMENT Students must complete and pass all THREE modules with passes in the examinations, coursework and other forms of assessment to be awarded a Pass in the Foundation Access Course for Undergraduate Programmes. All modules will carry 100 marks and will be assessed as follows (unless otherwise specified): Written examinations of 3-hour duration and continuous assessment carrying up to 50% of total marks. Continuous assessment can be based on practical labs and/or assignments or class tests. Students can carry any number of resits but the UTM s general policy concerning resits will be applied. Grading Resit Policy Failure in a module may be taken as a resit with the next cohort provided the programme is available / practical. Exceptionally, upon approval of the Head of School, the students may take a resit module earlier if it is available / practical or take an alternative to a failed module, where appropriate, in another programme. A module not taken through absence will be counted as a failed module and will be taken as a resit with the next cohort. If the resit is passed the student will be eligible for the full mark obtained for an authorised absence and a minimum pass mark for an unauthorised absence. Students who fail to correct their failures shall be given a maximum of three chances to clear same before they become eligible for the final award. When resat and passed they will be eligible for the award of the minimum pass mark. Grade Marks A 70 B 60 x 70 C 50 x 60 D 40 x 50 F 40 Grades A to D Grade F - Pass - Fail L.
