3 l(av B. lvl ltncl-t,; 1998 UWSP Distinguished Alumnus The Life of Ray Mundt is the story of a man who has balanced the dema nds of career and fam ily to achieve extraordinary success in both. Ray was born on August 10, in Appleton, Wisconsin, the son of a schoolteacher and a plumber. H e enlisted in the Navy in 1945, and prior to discharge w as offered an opportunity to attend the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. He enrolled instead at Carthage College, intent on becoming a minister. But, like many young people, his aspirations changed during his college years. He transferred to the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point, majoring in math and history and planning to become an actuary. Instead, when he graduated in 1953 with a bachelor of science degree, he was recruited into the sales training program of Kimberly Clark, the Neenah, Wisconsin-based paper manufacturer. Ray rose rapidly through the sales and management ranks of Kimberly C lark, becoming vice-president and genera l sales manager, and a candidate to assume the company's top leadership position. In 1970, Ray was recru ited by Alco Standard Corporation of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, to head up its fledgling paper distribution group. Under Ray's guidance, the group grew to become the largest paper distributor in North A merica. Ray's business acumen and leadership abilities resulted in his being named executive vice president and chief o.perating officer of Alco in 1973, president the following year, and chief executive officer in He was elected chairman of Alco in At Alco, Ray operated under a unique "partnership" philosophy based on the ability of "ordinary people to achieve extraordinary results " He was often quoted as saying, "There are no big-shots here," and through.out his career he has championed the power and resourcefulness of the individual as a corporation's greatest asset. His people proved him right. Under his leadership, the company grew from $ 4 50 million in annual revenues to $ 8 billion and delivered an average return to shareholders in excess of 20% per yea r. Ray 's energy and vision caused him to be sought out as a member of the Boards of Directors of a variety of organizations. H e has served on the boards of corporations such as Clark Equipment Company, Corestates Bank, Philadelphia Savings Fund Society, Nocopi International, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and Temple University He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Liberty Mutual Insurance Company as well as a member of Liberty's Advisory Board. He has been recognized by the National Conference of Christians and Jews, is a recipient of the Peter H ilton Award and the National Paper Trade Association's Stanley 0. Styles Award, and was named CEO of the year by Financial World magazine. Ray retired as chairman of A lco in 1995, but he was called back into service as chairman and chief executive officer to take the $7 billion company public as Unisource Worldwide, Inc. Ray has always prided himself on his ability to embrace change, a trait that served him well both at Alco and at Unisource. H e is now driving an ambitious restructuring program at Unisource in order to position the company for profitable growth into the next cen tu ry. Ray is an advocate of education as a lifelong process. In addition to his degree from UWSP, he also attended Syracuse University and the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University. However, he recognizes that the most meaningful education is not always formal, and has pursued opportunities to learn from all of his life experiences. At age 69, Ray continues to give meaning to the phrase, "works hard, plays hard. A consummate businessman, he has never been consumed by business. H e has always made time for his friends - many of w hom date back to his tender years in W isconsin; for his hobbies - he collects antique clocks, raises orchids and drives a fleet of high-performance sport cars; for sports - in addition to fishing and hunting, Ray is an avid "Cheesehead", but most of all, for his family. Ray and Ruth are the parents of four and the grandparents of six, all of whom have very special and very active roles in their daily lives. An old friend of Ray 's once said of him, "He is a man who, very early on, decided he was going to live his life to the fu llest." Everyone who knows him w ill testify that he has been exceedingly successful in his goal.

The medallion was cast in a 14K yellow gold pendant in 1968 and contains a purple amethyst to represent the school colors. The four sectioned areas terminating near the center symbolize the four colleges of the university and terminate as prongs for the gem. The mace, carried by the grand marshal of academic processions, was completed in 1976 and has a square base on which important dates in the school's history are recorded. The most prominent feature is the mace head which is a miniature of the cupola on Old Main, the school's symbol. The inside of the mace also includes a purple amethyst.
