1 Issued September 2013 Recreational vessel census June 2013 About This Publication This publication presents the results of a census taken of recreational vessels registered in Queensland on 30 June The data presented in this publication was extracted from the Department of Transport and Main Roads TRAILS Registration System (the register) on 8 July The publication provides data and statistics on registered recreational vessel attributes including vessel type, vessel length, vessel age, engine output and the maritime region in which vessels are registered. For purposes of comparison, data are provided at 30 June for the years 2013, 2012 and The calculation of the growth rates and decommissioning rates mentioned in this report have been made using the formulas described in the Australian Bureau of Statistics Motor Vehicle Census, Australia using data presented in the attached tables and previous additions of this report. Key Points At 30 June 2013 there were 245,390 recreational vessels (boats and PWC) listed on the register; approximately 1 vessel for every 19 people resident in the State. Since 30 June 2012 the number of registered vessels on the register increased by 1.7% reducing the 5 year average growth rate to 2%. Across the states five maritime regions the growth rate was weakest in the Brisbane region (1.3%) and strongest in the Gladstone region (2.5%). Approximately 9% (21,451 vessels) of the vessels on the register have been added since the last census in June Over the same period 17,277 vessels (7%) have been removed from the register while 21,871 (9%) have been transferred from one registrant to another. Based upon these figures Queensland registered recreational vessels have a decommissioning rate of approximately 6.6% per year. The distribution of the length of boats on the register has remained relatively unchanged with 70% of boats being less than 5 metres in length and 96% of them being less than 10 metres in length. Similarly the distribution of the recorded power output of the main engine fitted to boats has also remained relatively unchanged. In this case 44% of engines produce less than 25kW, 67% less than 50kW, 83% less than 100kW and 98 % less than 300kW of power. While Open Runabouts remain the most popular type of boat accounting for 67% of registered boats, the number of registered Quarter (cuddy) Cabin Cruisers has been increasing over the past 5 years (5.5%) while the numbers of Full and Half Cabin Cruisers have been relatively stable. The largest growth rates among the various types of registered boats involved those described as Centre Consoles, Bow Riders and Sports/Ski boats. While these boats now only account for 6.2%, 3.6% and 3.0% of registered boats they have increased in numbers by between 4.4% and 6.0% over the past 12 months and by an average of between 6.4% and 7.9% over the past 5 years. The number of personal watercraft (PWC, or jet skis) on the register increased by 7.9% over the past 12 months reducing the 5 year average growth rate from 11.8% at the last census to 10.5 %. Nevertheless the number of PWC on the register is increasing faster than any other type of vessel and now account for 7.7% of all registered recreational vessels. In additions to these registered vessels, there are presently 22,081 boat trailers registered for private use with which no registered vessel can be associated. This figure, while only indicative, can perhaps serve as a minimum estimate of the number of recreational vessels currently in use which do not require registration (for example unpowered boats). Since 30 June 2012 the number of recreational boats (that is vessels other than PWC) on the register increased by 1.25% over the past 12 months reducing the 5 year average growth rate to 1.46%.
