Anytime any-where access (a.k.a 3G) has costs proportional to capacity provided can still not provide QoS Orders-of-magnitude cheaper solutions required Key solution: Heterogeneous access Avoid Swiss Army knives Match access technology to local needs Forget QoS Consequences: Low cost (low margin?) high volume equipment New players (mfg, operators) Self-* (deployment, management ) No low-layer resource (QoS) control 5
