Who needs Service Aware Networks? The Wireless Access Perspective Jens Zander Director, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm 1
Trend 1 Much more for less but no QoS? 2
Trend 1: (Much) More for less First fixed IP access then mobile access Vision 2000 Mobile Web-browsing the multimedia service platform Interactive information services Streaming audio/video Rich exponentially growing content Adapted to small terminals + Location & context aware services + Same price as mobile telephony TODAYs reality: Same price as home-adsl Mobile telephony prices dropping Take-off was delayed but happening now 3
Traffic volumes rapidly increasing Volume Flat rate tariffs create data traffic boom Typical users: EDGE 50 MB/month HSPA 800 MB/month Traffic Revenue gap Revenues are not following. Example: Data traffic + 300% Revenues +11% Revenue ( major operator data ) Voice dominated Data dominated Time 4
Challenge: How will we survive flat rate mobile broadband access? Anytime any-where access (a.k.a 3G) has costs proportional to capacity provided can still not provide QoS Orders-of-magnitude cheaper solutions required Key solution: Heterogeneous access Avoid Swiss Army knives Match access technology to local needs Forget QoS Consequences: Low cost (low margin?) high volume equipment New players (mfg, operators) Self-* (deployment, management ) No low-layer resource (QoS) control 5
Access competition/cooperation Tomorrow wideband access Regional coverage Access /Service providers Access providers - choose their target areas and QoS offerings Local/wide area service Service availability is King Analogy: Gas stations Grocery stores Wide area coverage Small is possible! 6
Trend 2: The window of opportunity may be narrow 7
Who needs Service-Aware Networks? Content provider Neworks Service 3 Service 1 Intelligent Network Service Aware Networks Service n Service 2 Service n Content provider Service 1 Service n Dumb IPconnectivity Service 3 Service 2 Network Servie 1 User Terminal User Terminal QoS e.g. mobility High cost/poor resource utilization Supports demanding applications Support services when platform compatibility is poor Challenge: what services should we be aware of? Performance vs flexibility How long is the window-of-opportunity? End-end principle Best effort High flexibility Low cost Mature application platforms Challenge: Resource control 8
Todays paradigms Anytime Anywhere Now! Single system for all needs Seemless, lossless mobilty (=QoS) required Bandwidth/Capacity/Energy/Spectrum are scarce resources Operators are needed to provide physical access Problems can t be solved by throwing bandwidth at them (cf. Fiber optic networks) The wireless link IS the bottleneck QoS, Mobility, Compatibility service opportunity! 9
Tomorrows new paradigms Sometime Somewhere & when its cheap! Local access on premises, where people are Bandwidth is not a problem, latency & energy are High-speed, realtime HO not needed for seemless connectivity Local access (< 50m) Spectrum is abundant Operators provide connectivity not necessary local wireless access Problems can be solved by throwing bandwith at them The wireless link is NOT the bottleneck Limited Service Opportunities: Roaming 10
A world divided Business/Professional domain Clear value proposition QoS required Good profit margins Smaller volumes Consumer domain Low cost Best effort Standardization/ Vanishing margins Large volumes Citizen services public funding Professional Services DDD Requires appl. knowledge IBM Consumer services DDD Scalability issues Low-cost/low-end hardware 11
Example: Mobile TV Mobile TV Operator provided service Streaming Real-time Existing TV-content Requiring extensive infrastructure support is dead! Personal Multi Media Individual personalized content Non-real time on demand Time-shifting is already out there thriving but without specific infrastructure support ISDN WAP Mobile TV Lesson to be learned: Bandwidth killed the managed service The window of opportunity closed before the service took off 12
