3 Acrylic Acrylic is an extremely versatile substrate with a glossy finish. It is the perfect product for achieving a sophisticated, high-tech look. Acrylic is a plastic product that can be heated to conform to many different shapes. Its versatility allows you to design boxes, holders for brochures or a sign and easel all in one. Other applications include the following: Point of sale Menu boards Trade show exhibits Retail signs Restaurants Nameplates and name badges Office building signs Directional and informational signage Showroom signs What is it? Acrylic is also known by the brand name Optix-DA or Plexiglas. It is an excellent product when you want a high-quality finish. A three dimensional effect (giving the perception of depth to the finished product) can be achieved by using clear acrylic and applying the background color to the reverse side. Acrylic is best suited for long-term indoor or short-term outdoor use where protected by an overhang or awning (this does not include when acrylic is used in light box signs). Aluminum is a metal substrate that is recyclable, lightweight, and sturdy. It is resistant to weather and rust. Although it is lightweight, aluminum is one of the most rugged sign materials available. Sizes Aluminum is available in a variety of lengths, widths and thicknesses, and comes in sheets up to 4 x 8. Thicknesses The common thickness for Aluminum is.040 gauge, but is also available in.063 and.080 guages. The standard thickness used for safety and ID signage is.080. Banners can be virtually any size, from a standard 4 x 8 banner to one large enough to wrap around a bus, bandstand or building. Banners can be your ideal product for temporary use and lasting promotional solutions for both outdoor and indoor signage. Typical applications include the following signs: Grand Opening and Coming Soon Announcements Sales and Promotions Special Events What is it? There are two basic types of vinyl banner material. A 130z Scrim Vinyl is intended for outdoor and high stress environments. For indoor usage or banners stands, a smooth two-sided vinyl is common. Although there are other types of materials such as Tyvek and polyethylene, these are for limited applications and cannot be expected to last longer than a few days or weeks outside. You should consider using a heavier weight material when the banner will be suspended between poles or buildings. Grommets every 2-3 minimize stress and the two-ply corners ensure strength for intermediate to long-term outdoor life. Special care needs to be given to the installation of large banners. Sizes Banner material typically comes on a roll that is 60 wide. Some common sizes for banners are 3 x 6, 4 x 8, and 5 x 10. The maximum length for a banner is virtually unlimited. Medium-weight and durable, expanded PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is easily installed and transported. Its matte finish hides fingerprints and is easily cut into shapes, allowing for custom applications. When used outdoors, it must be sheltered and used in low-humidity areas, as some brands may absorb moisture and mildew when left in exposed locations. Without proper handling, it can be scratched. Some common brand names for expanded PVC are Sintro, Kommatex and Celtec. Sizes Expanded PVC is available in various lengths, widths and thicknesses and comes in sheets of up to 4 x 8. 20 Foam Core Boards Standard Foam Board Foam core board is made by adhering two sheets of paper to both sides of a foam core. Foam core board is light-weight yet sturdy and it is ideal for all indoor mounting applications. Easy to cut and customize, foam board is clay-coated for an extra smooth surface. Foam board comes in a variety of colors and is well suited to trade show applications and many other indoor uses. Foam board accepts inkjet and full color printing very well. Standard foam board is an economical product for temporary and short-term use. Fome-Cor is a typical brand of standard foam board. Premium Foam Board A premium board is made with a stronger based surface and denser foam is very rigid, weight bearing and flat, premium foam board is the best choice for projects where the board is going to handled repeatedly or transported. Premium foam board can be cut with most knife systems, can be fabricated with wood working tools and is available in white or black. Premium foam board is much more dent resistant and specifically, more rigid, than standard foam board. GatorFoam, Mighty Core, Ultra Board and Ultra White DP are types of premium board. Polystyrene is very similar to foam pvc and Coroplast. Polystyrene s flexibility makes it ideal for curved surfaces and it is best used indoors. Thicknesses The most commonly used thicknesses for polystyrene is generally.020,.030 and.060 guages. Medium Density Overlay, MDO, is dense plywood with a very thin paper film on either one or both sides. Its rigid, flat surface is ideal for painting. Alumalite consists of aluminum outer surface with a corrugated plastic core. Dibond consists of aluminum outer surface permanently bonded to a solid polyethylene core. LusterBoard is exterior plywood with prefinished aluminum face on one or both sides. Omega SignBoard offers a white vinyl surface over a hardwood plywood core stronger and lighter than MDO.
