3 1. SBE 501 Academic Specialization This course contains MIS focused research activities with guidance of the academic advisor. SBE501 course should be completed throughout the MIS Master's Degree Program. In the course, student have a chance to work on various topics of MIS area with respect to the viewpoint and the research focus of the academic advisor. Student may request to change the academic advisor during his/her master's degree education period. This justification may be considered by the MIS department in maximum two times during the course period. By the beginning of the thesis period, there are two options to choose for a student; (1) Continue with the current academic advisor as his/her thesis advisor, and (2) Make an application to change the current academic advisor to a new thesis advisor. All master's students should be registered this course during the program Requirements There is no requirement prior to taking SBE501 course Application procedure Step 1. The students must search the backgrounds of MIS faculty members and make a list of potential advisors to work with whose names to be filled in MISM Advisor Selection Form. Step 2. This form will be delivered to the postgraduate secretariat of MIS Department to be evaluated and sent for approval to Social Sciences Institute Steering Committee. Step 3. Should a student request to change his/her advisor, he or she has to follow the procedures outlined in Step 1 and Step Evaluation procedure The evaluation of the course is based on several criteria which are provided in the evaluation framework, MISR Rubric for SBE 501 Academic Specialization. For the students who are not successful for two semesters in a row; the advisor may request to fail the student upon the approval of Social Sciences Institute Steering Committee. In that case, the student is required to change the advisor and the Master s Thesis topic in order to continue the Master's program. 3/9

SBE 503 Seminar This course includes scientific research activities on a specific topic in the field decided by the student in comply with the research areas of the chosen advisor Requirements Students are obligated to complete the compulsory courses Application procedure The followings steps must be taken for applying course of SBE 503 Seminar during the corresponding registration calendar: Step 1. The students must search the backgrounds of MIS faculty members and make a list of potential advisors to work with whose names to be filled in MISM Advisor Selection Form. Step 2. This form will be delivered to the postgraduate secretariat of MIS Department to be evaluated and sent for approval to Social Sciences Institute Steering Committee. Step 3. Should a student request to change his/her advisor, he or she has to follow the procedures outlined in Step 1 and Step 2. In that case, the new advisor may ask the student to take additional courses. Step 4. After the approval of the advisor by Social Sciences Institute, the students have to fill in MISM Seminar Application Form to be approved by the advisor Evaluation procedure The results of the seminar have to be submitted in a written format to the advisor and orally presented to MIS students and to faculty members either 1 within the scope of MIS Research Seminar Series or in an academic environment negotiated with the advisor. The evaluation of the seminar is based on several criteria which are provided in the evaluation framework, MISR Rubric for SBE 503 Seminar. The results of SBE 503 Seminar are marked as either satisfactory (S), or unsatisfactory (US). 1 MIS Research Seminar Series (MIS RSS) is an open seminar platform of Department of Management Information Systems to have a chance to discuss some research topics in detail. SBE 507 Master s Thesis This is a scientific work that is in line with the research tracks of the field conducted during MIS Master's Degree Program Requirements Students are obligated to complete minimum 9 courses. In addition, the seminar has to be successfully completed one semester before the defense of Master s Thesis Application procedure The followings steps must be taken for applying Master s Thesis during the corresponding registration calendar: Step 1. The students must search the backgrounds of MIS faculty members and make a list of potential advisors to work with whose names to be filled in MISM Advisor Selection Form. Step 2. This form will be delivered to the postgraduate secretariat of MIS Department to be evaluated and sent for approval to Social Sciences Institute Steering Committee. Step 3. Should a student request to change his/her advisor, he or she has to follow the procedures outlined in Step 1 and Step 2. In that case, the new advisor may ask the student to take additional courses. Step 4. Students have to fill in MISM Master s Thesis Proposal Form to be approved by the advisor as well as the chair of MIS Department and sent for approval to Social Sciences Institute Steering Committee. Step 5. Should a student request to change his/her thesis topic, he or she has to follow the procedures outlined in Step 1, Step 2, and Step 4. Step 6. In the final semester that a student will defend his/her Master s Thesis, the students have to fill in MISM Master s Thesis Defense Committee Application Form to be approved by the advisor as well as the chair of MIS Department and sent for approval to Social Sciences Institute Steering Committee Evaluation procedure 7/9

8 The thesis has to be submitted in a written format to the advisor and determined scientific committee members Master s Thesis defense date is proposed by the advisor and this has to be approved by the Social Sciences Institute Steering Committee The written form of the thesis must be submitted to the scientific committee members two weeks before the defense date The exam covers the oral presentation of the thesis and defending of ideas/thesis based on the follow-up questions raised by the committee members The evaluation of Master s Thesis is based on scientific rigor and quality that is decided by the members of Scientific Committee. The evaluation of the thesis is based on several criteria which are provided in the evaluation framework provided below In addition to the framework, students are obliged to submit (related to thesis topic) either (1) a scientific article to a peer-review international journal or (2) a conference proceeding full paper to an international conference and get it accepted for publication or have it published prior to defending the thesis After the evaluation the committee members may decide to Accept, Reject or Request for revision of the thesis. Should the decision require for a student to revise his/her thesis, then the student is obliged to re-present or re-defend his/her thesis within maximum 3 months of period in front of the same committee members. At maximum two revisions can be given to a student for successfully passing the exam.
