Sometimes It is difficult confirm a pollution but we try to be optimist and find a new evidence or some data than help us to finish each case. The inspection on board corroborate the conclusions from aircraft survey in many cases. I would like to show 4 cases in which it had been necessary other source to confirm the pollution detected by the aircraft. 1 st Night detection 2 nd Samples = Oil (MARPOL Annex I) + Vegetable Oil 3 rd Inoperative OWS (Oil Water Separator) 4 th Night detection +Samples = Oil (Typical BILGE Discharge) ***Try to analyze what the sensors show because all it was detected in this cases it is mineral oil. 10

We received an 2 days later from the captain : In fact the duty 3 rd engineer had rigged a portable hose from the poop deck and was pumping overboard directly from the bilge holding tank. A full investigation was ordered on board and it was determinate that the 3 rd Engineer was acting alone. He was not instructed to do this and no one else was aware of what was taking place 14

February 18 th, 2010: Spanish Maritime Administration applies for a technical report to SASEMAR March 26 th,2010: Spanish Maritime Administration opens an administrative file : Different Courts from Spanish legal system involved January 13 th, 2013: Final Sentence from Supreme Tribunal 32

36 3.- Final Sentence in a Nocturnal Mineral Oil Spill Case February 18 th, 2009: Owner lawyer send an exposition from Chief Engineer to Spanish Maritime Administration i ti Chief Engineer alleged that the aircraft spill detected was a residues waters discharge. Attached plans from residues waters plant from the vessel. February 18 th, 2010: Spanish Maritime Administration applied for a technical report to SASEMAR WHAT WE HAD! Vessel information Chemical Tanker vessel but They didn t discharge cleaning tank residues. They said the discharge was from the engine spaces. The spill is Hot Water Aircraft Evidences Night Detection Spill Length = 21 km SLAR /IR 36

Sea water temperature is <15ºC in October. Could the hot water on top of the cold water from Ocean keep the high temperature for more than 1 hr? What is it discharged from the engine spaces? SLAR /IR sensor record the spill 1 Hr 15 min. What kind of substance remain on top of sea more than 1 hr? Could we judge this substance modifies the good state of Ocean?
