2 Case Study 1i Limited The Company and Client The company 1i was set up five years ago as a solutions house to provide technology for the intelligent homes, such as smart lighting, home automation systems and climate control. However, within a few months this focus changed when the Vigia Group asked 1i to supply a TV distribution system for Vigia s developments in the Algarve. The Vigia Group is one of the leading luxury property resort developers in Portugal with seven resorts in the Western Algarve and one in the Alentejo region. Each resort comprises of properties that can either be bought outright or on fractional freehold, with others retained by the group for holiday lets. Customer Challenge Vigia s focus was to provide high quality developments incorporating the latest communication capabilities. The company wanted to provide telephony, Internet and entertainment in each of its properties..the main challenge was to ensure that the infrastructure and systems that were put in place would support the rapid evolution of technology to meet both current and future needs. 1i was able to give expert advice, supported by leading edge products and system providers, to ensure that any investment made by Vigia would be future proofed. 1i are now the tripleplay distributor in Portugal and have three resellers promoting and installing their solutions in hotels and developments throughout Portugal. PROFILE 1i Limited UK Project Vigia Group - IPTV and VoIP Scope To provide an IP television and Voice over IP telephone system initially to 151 residential properties. The IPTV system was to provide 18 UK TV channels, four Portuguese channels,video on Demand and guest information service. The system was to have multi language support and be easy for clients to navigate. Page 2 Allied Telesis Case Study: 1i Limited

3 The Solution With the project brief defined, 1i spent a year designing and identifying the right platforms and system providers. Within a short period of time the design team at 1i identified Allied Telesis as the logical switching equipment provider that would meet all their requirements and be highly cost-effective to deploy. Through the Allied Telesis eco-partner programme the team in the UK were able to introduce 1i to Tripleplay Services, a designer and supplier of IPTV systems, and Talk 24 for IP telephony. By using Allied Telesis recommended ecopartners, 1i were able to select the best-in-breed partners and ensure integration risk was minimal. The installation began in 2007 using a fiber-optic Allied Telesis backbone, supported by their core and fiber switches. Allied Telesis edge switches were used to connect the fiber to a Cat 5 cabling infrastructure, which was used throughout the properties. Both standard and VoIP handsets were used for telephony services which were supported through an Allied Telesis gateway product and IP television was provided through set-top boxes. This phase was successfully completed on time and to budget. The first installation is up and running with all switches working smoothly and 1i seamlessly integrated the TV and telephone system with the Vigia Group s own billing system. During i supplied 150 of Vigia s properties with connectivity and, with completion at The View 1 at Salema Beach, another 55 were connected by the end of the year. Over the next 12 months, 1i will be working on the Vigia Group s latest beach development at Salema,The View 2, where a further 110 properties will be connected. For the new properties, the decision has been made that fiber-optic will be connected to the home as 1i consider that running fiber to every property immediately means they will be ready to provide new higher bandwidth services in the future.they are also undertaking a feasibility study to upgrade Vigia s older developments and are looking into the practicality and cost implications of taking fiber-optic cable into every property - Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) By providing an end-to-end IP infrastructure, 1i is able to offer Vigia s customers additional services above and beyond VoIP and IPTV. This will include enabling a UK client to work virtually from Portugal with a UK telephone number (going direct to the villa with no increase in call costs), intruder alarm systems and monitoring stations for each property, integrated climate control and a controlled lighting system throughout all properties.the latter ensures that Vigia meets its environment commitments to provide energy efficient homes.through the use of IP and the 1i technology providers,vigia is able to offer its residents a remote monitoring service which can be accessed from any country with an IP connection. At 1i s recommendation all the Vigia Group systems now run Allied Telesis switches with 1i providing a fully managed and monitored support service. The Allied Telesis switches connect directly from the server to an Allied Telesis intelligent Multiservice Gateway (img), which is a fiber-optic device.this new solution ensures that there is just one piece of equipment in the property and one in the rack in the IT room. 4 The Result By selecting Allied Telesis and their eco-partners, 1i was able to deliver the brief below the budget provisioned by Vigia whilst providing greater functionality and services to its customers.the move to using FTTH will further reduce the cost as well as future proofing the network for the new range of services and technology that will be in the market place within the coming years. 1i focussed its entire efforts on ensuring that the Vigia system was a showpiece and reference model for what can now be achieved and is planning to expand its customer portfolio to other developments within the region.the technology, systems and services provided at Vigia will prove a strong reference for other customers and show that 1i and its partners, Allied Telesis,Tripleplay Services and Talk 24, is the right combination to provide this integrated eco-friendly system.
