all about leather ➀ YOU VE JUST PURCHASED A ROCHE BOBOIS SOFA: You ve been captivated by its sleek design and color; now you re ready to discover the secrets beneath its elegant surface: how it was built, and how to preserve its fine quality. This manual will guide you through the care and maintenance of your ROCHE BOBOIS Sofa. THE BEAUTY, ALLURE, AND SUPPLENESS OF LEATHER SPECIALLY MADE FOR ROCHE BOBOIS BEGINS AT THE TANNERY. THERE ARE TWO PRINCIPLE PHASES IN THE LEATHER TANNING PROCESS. IN THE FIRST PHASE, RAW HIDE IS CONVERTED TO A MATERIAL THAT IS CLEAN, SUPPLE, ROT PROOF AND LONG LASTING. IN THE SECOND PHASE, THE HIDE TAKES ON ITS FINAL APPEARANCE THROUGH A SERIES OF STEPS (LEATHER CONDITIONING, COLOR WASHES, THE APPLICATION OF PIGMENTS, DYES, AND FINISHINGS). HIDE ARE THUS TRANSFORMED INTO LEATHER THAT DISPLAYS THE FEATURES THAT LED TO YOUR PURCHASE OF A ROCHE BOBOIS SOFA. ➀all about leather ➁the acb s of upholstery ➂novasuede and alcantara ➃the Secrets of upholstery While considerable efforts are made to ensure that the information contained in the Care Guide is as accurate as possible, Roche Bobois makes no representations, conditions or warranties of any kind whatsoever, express or implied, in relation to the accuracy of the information contained in the Care Guide. If you have any concerns about caring for your sofa, please do not hesitate to contact a Roche Bobois showroom. LEATHER: A NATURAL MATERIAL The process of tanning and finishing transforms leather into a fine product. The tanning process, however, preserves the natural qualities of the hide. The creases, stretch marks, scars and insect bites that the animal acquires while at pasture are unique and form an integral part of the leather. Often faintly visible, these blemishes do not detract from the quality of the product. Instead, they act as a guarantee that the leather is natural with intact, full grain. After several months of use and exposure to variations in temperature, stretching and general wear, the leather takes on its final appearance, adapting to environmental constraints and often maintaining the residual marks of the hide. This natural process (which also occurs in leather used for clothing and accessories) is visible depending on the sofa s level of use. Environmental characteristics such as temperature and humidity, can contribute to the suppleness of the leather. I. GUIDELINES FOR USE To fully enjoy your leather upholstery, and preserve its longevity, observe the following simple guidelines: Depending on its surface finish, leather is sensitive even to indirect heat and light. Both factors can cause leather to lose moisture and fade. In choosing the placement of your sofa, avoid exposure to direct sunlight as well as close proximity to uncovered windows. Closely follow the care guidelines to preserve the appearance of your leather. Do not wait until visible damage occurs before undertaking regular care. Do not attempt to clean the leather or remove stains without the proper products. Do not place your sofa/seating close to a direct heat source such as a fireplace, radiator, or heating device. Although leather is a resistant material, like wood and other textiles, it is sensitive to external pressure. Scratches from sharp objects or pet claws, friction from rough fabric or clothing, rivets or buckles on clothing can all damage its smooth surface and should be avoided. II. REGULAR CARE DUSTING The amount of dust and dirt that settles on your leather is equivalent to the amount that settles on wood furniture, which you would dust frequently because of its high visibility. To prevent dust from tarnishing the leather and embedding into its pores, dust weekly, especially if your sofa has a tufted seat. Use either a vacuum cleaner fitted with a soft brush attachment, or a soft damp cloth. Be sure to vacuum under the seat cushions regularly. CARE Regular care is essential to preserving leather s aesthetic and physical form. Maintenance should be carried out in two steps, three times a year. 1. Cleaning: this step eliminates grease residue, soil resulting from ordinary wear, and stains that persist after regular dusting. Cleaning also primes the leather, creating a smooth, unsoiled surface to which
conditioning products can be applied and thus maximizing the products effectiveness in penetrating, coating and protecting the leather depending on its surface finish. 2. Conditioning: this step enables the preservation of leather furniture by helping prevent moisture loss, stains, friction and discoloration. Conditioning products act as a shield against the elements that damage leather. Applying these products regularly will help maintain this protective shield and prolong its effectiveness. III. USING THE ROCHE BOBOIS CARE KIT CLEANING Cleaning should be carried out using the SOFT CLEANER soap included in the ROCHE BOBOIS soft leather care kit, or using a cleaning solution of glycerin soap dissolved in warm water. Avoid using harsh soaps or detergents. Directions Pour a small amount of SOFT CLEANER or another recommended cleaning solution onto the sponge included in the kit or on a soft, non-abrasive sponge. Squeeze the sponge until it lathers, then clean the leather with small circular motions, allowing enough time for the product to seep into the pores of the leather. The cleaning effect occurs through a chemical reaction that takes place over the course of a few minutes. Take care not to rub too harshly or over-dampen and soak the leather. Rinse the sponge regularly to eliminate accumulated soil. After cleaning, wipe with a clean, damp sponge that has been rinsed of all soap residue, and allow the leather to dry. Note: we highly recommend the use of a soft brush (silk hair) when applying the shampoo on grained leathers. The slight circular movements of the brush will optimize the cleaning and avoid dirt slugging in the veins. CONDITIONING Conditioning should be carried out with the CRÈME DE PROTECTION product included in your ROCHE BOBOIS leather care kit and the cloth designated for that purpose. The ROCHE BOBOIS kit is designed for leather that is sensitive to ultraviolet rays. Using CRÈME DE PROTECTION in combination with protective measures will help limit the damage caused by ultraviolet rays. If you don t have this product, substitute a leather conditioner that is equivalent in its ability to moisturize and protect. Avoid aerosol sprays containing solvents as well as oil-based products. Directions Pour the conditioning product onto the cloth designated for that purpose and gently spread so that it coats the surface of the leather. Take special care to cover the seat, the arms, and the back. Let dry, then rub with a soft wool or cotton cloth if you wish a lustrous finish. IV. OCCASIONAL STAIN REMOVAL GUIDELINES All ROCHE BOBOIS leathers were treated during the tanning process with a protective coating either at the core or on the surface of the leather. Regular care helps preserve this protective surface and facilitates stain removal. In the event of an accidental spill, calmly and carefully intervene as soon as possible. Before using stain removal products, remove as much of the spill as possible by gently patting with an absorbent cloth. 1. Follow the directions and product recommendations listed in the Stain Removal Directions section of this guide (paragraph VI.). 2. After testing the product on a small, hidden part of leather and ensuring that there is no negative reaction, proceed with stain removal according to the product s directions. Avoid rubbing; the chemical effect of the product should be sufficient for stain removal. Should you fail to obtain satisfactory results, do not persist. Do not use hazardous products, which may alter the surface of the leather and worsen the situation. Instead, consult your local ROCHE BOBOIS store or a professional. V. STAIN REMOVAL AND LEATHER CARE DIRECTIONS METHOD NUMBER ONE Pour a small amount of SOFT CLEANER product found in the ROCHE BOBOIS care kit (or the cleaning solution described in the Cleaning section of this guide) onto the sponge found in the ROCHE BOBOIS stain removal kit or a similar soft sponge. Squeeze the sponge until it lathers and gently rub the stain with small circular motions, taking care not to scratch the surface of the leather. Allow the time for the cleaning product to work. Repeat as necessary. Clean the stained area with a sponge rinsed in water. If the sofa has been regularly treated with conditioning cream, SOFT CLEANER will eliminate most common stains. Note: after stain removal, apply conditioning cream to the area to provide extra protection. METHOD NUMBER TWO Use the ROCHE BOBOIS spray stain remover or a recommended product for oil, grease, or sebum stains. Spray the product less than eight inches away to ensure that it penetrates the stain. All spray the area surrounding the stain. Let dry. The stain remover, which contains a mixture of absorbent powder and a degreasing agent, will form a white powder when fully dry. Allow the product to sit for one-to-two hours, then remove using a vacuum cleaner. Repeat as necessary. As a final step, use stain removal Method Number One to clean and protect your leather. Note: in the event of sebum (scalp oil) stains, light discoloration may persist after stain removal. This discoloration is not due to the action of the stain removal product. It is generally caused by sebum secreted by hair rubbing against the leather during ordinary use. VI. STAIN REMOVAL DIRECTIONS TYPES OF STAINS: DIRECTIONS - Liquid Ink: consult your ROCHE BOBOIS store or a professional. - Ballpoint Pen: use the EFASTYL stain remover carried by the line of ROCHE BOBOIS products designed for solid-colored leather. Contained in a ballpoint applicator, this product is particularly effective when used prior to any other product. Also effective is a solution of three parts alcohol mixed with one part water. Soak a cotton ball in the solution and remove the stain by gently rubbing the soiled area. After stain removal, be sure to recondition the leather with conditioning cream. If the stain has fully penetrated into the leather and cannot be removed, do not continue rubbing. Consult your ROCHE BOBOIS store or a professional. - Smoke: use Method Number One. - Watercolor Paint: use Method Number One. - Solvent-based Paint: consult your ROCHE BOBOIS store. - Lipstick: use Method Number One. - Sugar, Food: use Method Number One. - Milk: use Method Number One or remove using a solution of water and 28% ammonia, then use protective cream. - Blood: use Method Number One or a solution of water and 10% white vinegar. Rinse with a sponge and protect the area using conditioning cream. - Oil, Grease, Sebum, Sweat: use Method Number Two. - Urine: use Method Number One. - Mud: use Method Number One. - Dye stain from any attire or fabric: use the detergent cleaner 2000.
the abc of upholstery ➁ YOU DECIDED TO PURCHASE YOUR ROCHE BOBOIS UPHOLSTERY BECAUSE OF THE BEAUTY AND ALLURE OF THEIR FABRICS. TO PRESERVE THE FABRIC, IT IS ESSENTIAL TO TAKE CARE OF IT ON A REGULAR BASIS. FOLLOWING THESE DIRECTIONS WILL HELP YOU ELIMINATING SURFACE DIRT AND ACCIDENTAL STAINS RESULTING FROM DAILY USE. GUIDELINES Similar to all interior fabrics (carpets, rugs, drapes), upholstered furniture is sensitive to light and heat depending on the nature of its fiber. In choosing the placement of your sofa, avoid exposure to direct sunlight as well as close proximity to a heat source. Dust, similar to the one found on wood furniture and floor, and which results from ordinary wear (friction from clothing and skin, little accidental stains) is the primary element dulling and your upholstery s surface. Do not wait until grayness or soil appearing on the most exposed areas of your sofa becomes so embedded that even recommended care would be ineffective. I. REGULAR CARE DUSTING This step should be carried out regularly to eliminate dust that settles on the upholstery and ensure that it does not become embedded in the fabric through everyday wear. Dust weekly with a vacuum cleaner fitted with a soft brush attachment. Avoid hard brushes, which may damage the surface of the fabric and cause pilling (breakage of the threads that constitute the fabric, forming a sort of surface velvet and possibly giving it a light sheen, especially on darker fabrics.) Be sure to vacuum under the seat cushions. ROUTINE STAIN REMOVAL GUIDELINES Certain ROCHE BOBOIS fabrics were given a protective treatment upon fabrication and all others can receive this treatment upon request at your ROCHE BOBOIS store. The treatment helps to prevent stains from penetrating the fabric and facilitates their removal. In the event of accidental spills and occasional stains, calmly and carefully intervene as soon as possible, without allowing the stain to set. Before using stain removal products, remove as much of liquid or solid spills as possible using an absorbent cloth. For dry stains, gently brush and then vacuum the area. STAIN REMOVAL GUIDELINES 1. Using the stain removal grid, choose the method that best applies to the type of stain. 2. After testing the product on a small, inconspicuous patch of fabric, proceed with stain removal according to the directions outlined by the various methods. Avoid rubbing the cloth. The combination of patting the stain with a sponge and the chemical reaction of the product are sufficient. Rubbing harshly can alter the fiber of the fabric and damage its appearance. In the event of a residual stain ring, repeat fabric stain removal Method Number One while attempting to dry the fabric with an absorbent cloth or the end of a vacuum cleaner hose attachment. The cloth should be as dry as possible prior to applying absorbent stain removal powder. Drying of the damp area can be accelerated using a hairdryer. Set to low temperature, dry in a spiral pattern from the exterior to the interior of the damp area. Avoid overheating the surface of the fabric. Note: to allow the absorbent powder to fully activate, be sure to generously apply it to the stain, sprinkling or spreading it by hand. II. FABRIC STAIN REMOVAL METHODS METHOD NUMBER ONE Soak a sponge with the shampoo contained in the ROCHE BOBOIS stain removal kit or with a stain removal solution of cold water mixed
with 5% gentle detergent such as Woolite. Pat the stain with the wet sponge, then absorb the cleaning liquid and the stain using a dry sponge or cloth. Taking care not to oversoak the fabric, repeat as necessary until you ve achieved satisfying results. Avoid harshly rubbing or scratching the stained area to avoid damaging the fabric. After removing the stain and drying the damp area, sprinkle with absorbent stain removal powder to eliminate product residue and the risk of a residual stain ring. Let dry, then vacuum using a soft brush attachment. Stain Removal Utilizing a Vacuum Cleaner (for stubborn stains) Apply the stain removal product or a recommended cleaning solution to the stain, then pat with a sponge to activate the cleansing effect. With the vacuum cleaner set to medium strength, vacuum the stain and the larger area around it with the round end of a pipe attachment. Repeat as necessary, then apply absorbent powder. When dry, vacuum the absorbent powder. Note: it is important to use the absorbent powder. It facilitates the extraction of stain residue and avoids the rings creation. METHOD NUMBER TWO Mix together one part water, one part isopropyl-rubbing alcohol 90%, and one part white vinegar. Using a sponge, apply the solution to the stain and follow the steps outlined in Method Number One, replacing the stain removal soap or product with the homemade solution. Before allowing the area to dry, follow the steps outlined in Method Number One to eliminate all residue from the stain removal solution used in Method Number Two. Note: if you do not have the necessary ingredients for the above solution, stain removal Method Number One may be sufficient. METHOD NUMBER THREE Mix together a solution of 70% water and 30% ammonia. Using a sponge, apply the solution to the stain and follow the steps outlined in Method Number One, replacing the stain removal product or soap with the homemade solution. Before allowing the area to dry, go through the complete steps outlined in Method Number One to eliminate all residue from the stain removal solution used in Method Number Three. METHOD NUMBER FOUR Apply a chlorine solution or isopropyl rubbing alcohol 90% with a clean cloth, taking care to pat and not rub the stained area. Sprinkle on absorbent powder, then let dry and vacuum. Repeat as necessary. Complete the process by following the complete steps outlined in Method Number One. III. STAIN REMOVAL GRID Choose the method that best applies to the type of stain you want to remove. Apply the first recommended method described in this section, then let dry. Do not continue with the stain removal process if the results obtained by the first method are satisfactory. In the event of stain residue, use the following recommended methods in the order they appear. TYPES OF STAINS CLEANING DIRECTIONS OF UPHOLSTERY ❶ ❷ ❸ ❹ Coffee or Tea Cocktails, Liquor Wine, Beer Sugary Food Mustard, Ketchup Fruit Milk Butter, Grease, Oil Polishy, Wax, Lipstick Pen, Ink Blood Urine, Perspiration Mud, Dirt OTHER TYPES OF STAINS Candle Wax Place a cloth on the stain and iron at a very low setting to avoid damaging or leaving marks on the synthetic fibers of the upholstery. Eliminate wax residue by using Method Number Four. Chewing-gum Chill the gum using either an anti-chewing-gum spray or a plastic bag filled with ice cubes. Break up and remove the gum. Stain residue can be prevented by patting the area with a cloth soaked in a chlorinated solvent (Method Number Four). Nail Polish Pat the stain with a cloth soaked in acetone to dilute the stain. Then pat the area with a clean, dry cloth to extract as much of the stain as possible. Repeat as necessary and complete the process by sprinkling the area with absorbent powder. WARNING: acetone or amyl acetate are toxic substances. Make sure you follow closely the safety instructions stated on the products labels. Paint Depending on the type of paint, use an appropriate kind of paint thinner. Consult your paint vendor for the correct kind and follow closely the safety instructions stated on products packagings. Finish by following the stain removal method recommended for nail polish stains. Note: to prevent discoloration in the area where the stain was removed, it is often necessary to completely clean the furniture section where the stain occurred. IV. GENERAL CLEANING In addition to undergoing regular care, it is occasionally necessary to give your upholstery its thorough deep-cleaning to improve overall appearance. We recommend that you use a professional service company. CLEANING DIRECTION Following the directions for Stain Removal Method Number One outlined in this guide, evenly dampen the surface of the soiled area with ROCHE BOBOIS stain removal soap or a recommended cleaning solution. Pour the soap into a receptacle, soak a sponge in the liquid and lather by squeezing the sponge several times. Using small circular motions, gently wipe the upholstery with the lathered sponge. Note: to prevent the risk of a residual soap ring, it is important to apply the soap evenly to all sections of the upholstery. Proceed carefully, taking care to cover all parts of the chair in succession (first the seat cushion, then the arms, finally the chair back). When finished, dry the damp areas with a soft cloth, gently wiping and not scratching the upholstery. This step will help eliminate soil, which the soap has raised to the surface. Allow the upholstery to thoroughly dry, then vacuum all cleaned areas. This will remove crystallized soap residue that has transformed into powder, trapping dirt particles not eliminated by the dry cloth. 6 novasuede and alcantara ➂ NOVASUEDE AND ALCANTARA MICROFIBERS ON YOUR UPHOLSTERY ARE EASY CARE PRODUCTS. HOWEVER, IN ORDER TO PRESERVE THEM AND FULLY ENJOY YOUR ACQUISITION, IT IS ESSENTIAL TO TAKE CARE OF IT ON A REGULAR BASIS. FOLLOWING THE RECOMMENDED CARE GUIDELINES WILL PREVENT SURFACE DIRT AND ACCIDENTAL STAINS RESULTING FROM DAILY USE. GUIDELINES Like all interior fabrics (rugs, carpets, drapes), Alcantara and Novasuede are sensitive to light and heat. In choosing the placement of your chairs, avoid exposure to direct sunlight as well as close proximity to a heat source. Dust, similar to the one found on wood furniture and floor, and which results from ordinary wear (friction from clothing and skin, little accidental stains) is the primary element dulling and your upholstery s surface. Do not wait until grayness or soil appearing on the most exposed areas of your chairs becomes so engrained that even recommended care would be ineffective. I. REGULAR CARE DUSTING This step should be carried out regularly to eliminate the dust that settles on the microfibers and ensure that it does not become embedded into the fabric through everyday wear. Dust your upholstery with a vacuum cleaner fitted with a soft brush attachment. Brush regularly with a clothing brush to preserve the velvety look of your furniture. OCCASIONAL STAIN REMOVAL GUIDELINES In the event of accidental spills and one time stains, calmly and carefully address the situation as soon as possible. The combination of the exceptional qualities of Novasuede and Alcantara their accompanying products and these stain removal guidelines will enable you to eliminate most common stains. Before using stain removal products, remove as much of liquid or solid spills as possible by gently patting with an absorbent cloth. For dry stains, gently brush and then vacuum the stained area. STAIN REMOVAL GUIDELINES 1. Using the stain removal grid, choose the product and method that best apply to the type of stain. 2. Apply the stain removal product or solution to the stain with a sponge and pat the area. 3. Remove the stain and the stain removal solution by wiping the damp area with a clean, dry cloth in small circular motions. Regularly use a dry portion of the cloth to absorb all liquid and achieve satisfactory results. 4. Repeat the stain removal process as necessary until achieving satisfactory results. For old, set stains you may need to repeat the process several times. 5. Harshly rubbing the stain will not improve results and may alter the surface of the upholstery. Allow the stain removal product to dissolve the stain. Wiping the upholstery in circular motions with an absorbent cloth is sufficient for the removal of stain and product residue. SUPPLEMENTARY GUIDELINES If a residual stain ring persists after following the recommended steps and using absorbent powder, repeat the process with the appropriate stain removal product, attempting to more thoroughly dry the upholstery with a dry absorbent cloth wiped beyond the immediate damp area or with the end of a vacuum cleaner pipe attachment. The area should be as dry as possible before applying stain removal powder. The drying process can be accelerated with a hairdryer held at a reasonable distance from the damp area (avoid overheating the upholstery).
Begin the stain removal process as soon as possible, without waiting for the stain to dry and set. The faster the intervention, the better the results. Slipcovers and removable sections of your chairs are washable. When machine washing, use a delicate cycle and a maximum temperature of 85 degrees fahrenheit (30 degrees celsius) or cold water, as well as a very mild detergent. Handwashing by soaking in cold or lukewarm water using a liquid color-safe detergent such as Woolite is recommended. After rinsing with water, run slipcovers in a washing machine spin cycle at medium speed to eliminate a maximum amount of moisture before air drying. For best drying results, suspend slipcovers and removable sections and allow to drip dry. Once slipcovers are reattached, brush lightly to give upholstery a soft, velvety appearance. II. GENERAL CLEANING Once general cleaning is necessary to improve the appearance of your upholstery, several options are available. METHOD NUMBER ONE Following the directions for Stain Removal Method Number One outlined in this guide, evenly dampen the surface of the soiled area with ROCHE BOBOIS stain removal soap or a recommended cleaning solution. Brush with a soft brush or a sponge to activate the cleaning effect, evenly covering all surfaces of the sofa. Using small circular motions, dry the cleaned surfaces by gently rubbing with an absorbent cloth or sponge. This step will help eliminate the dirt that is brought to the surface. Let dry, then vacuum and brush the upholstery as a final step. DEEP-CLEANING For deep-cleaning, rent a carpet cleaning machine fitted with an upholstered furniture attachment. After pre-treating stains with the recommended methods and products, mix a solution of water and the commercial cleaning product sold with the machine (20% product and the remainder water), or a solution of water and liquid color-safe detergent such as Woolite (5% detergent and the remainder water). Use a manual or automatic spray bottle to evenly distribute the product on all soiled surfaces. Brush upholstery with a soft brush to activate the cleaning effect of the product. Use the carpet cleaning machine with water only in order to thoroughly and evenly rinse the upholstery. Once the rinsing process is complete, uniformly dry all sections of the upholstery with the suction attachment of the machine, taking care not to inject water. Let dry, then brush the upholstery as a final step. PROFESSIONAL CLEANING SERVICE If you are interested in obtaining the services of a cleaning professional, consult your ROCHE BOBOIS store. III. STAIN REMOVAL DIRECTIONS METHOD NUMBER ONE Apply either the ROCHE BOBOIS stain removal spray contained in the stain removal and cleaning kit or a solution of 5% liquid detergent such as Woolite, and the remainding water. Use a sponge to pat the stain. Absorb the stain and the cleaning product with a soft, dry cloth. Dry by wiping the stain and the larger area around it in small circular motions with a cloth, frequently switching to an unused portion of the cloth. Repeat the stain removal process as necessary. As a final step, sprinkle the damp area with absorbent stain removal powder to eliminate product and stain residue. Let dry, then vacuum and brush the upholstery to give it a velvety finish. Stain Removal Utilizing a Vacuum Cleaner (for stubborn stains) Apply the stain removal spray or a recommended cleaning solution to the stain, then pat with a sponge to activate the cleansing effect. With the vacuum cleaner set to medium strength, vacuum the stain and the larger area around it with the round end of a pipe attachment. (Repeat as necessary). Dry with a soft, absorbent cloth and apply absorbent powder. Let dry, vacuum, then brush. METHOD NUMBER TWO Mix together one part water, one part isopropyl rubbing alcohol 90%, and one part white vinegar. Using a sponge, apply the solution to the stain and follow the steps outlined in Method Number One, replacing the stain removal soap or product with the homemade solution. Before allowing the area to dry, go through the steps outlined in Method Number One to eliminate all residue from the stain removal solution used in Method Number Two. METHOD NUMBER THREE Mix together a solution of 70% water and 30% ammonia. Using a sponge, apply the solution to the stain and follow the steps outlined in Method Number One, replacing the stain removal product or soap with the homemade solution. Before allowing the area to dry, go through the steps outlined in Method Number One to eliminate all residue from the stain removal solution used in Method Number Three. METHOD NUMBER FOUR Apply the ROCHE BOBOIS stain remover for grease or stains, mineral oil or isopropyl rubbing alcohol 90% with a clean cloth. Gently pat the stain and the area around it with small circular motions. (Repeat as necessary). Complete the process by following the complete steps outlined in Method Number One. IV. STAIN REMOVAL GRID Choose the method that best applies to the type of stain you want to remove. Apply the first method described in this section, then let dry. Do not continue with the stain removal process if the results obtained by the first method are satisfactory. In the event of stain residue, use the following recommended methods in the order they appear: TYPES OF STAINS OTHER TYPES OF STAINS Candle Wax Place a cloth on the stain and iron at a very low setting. 8 the secrets of upholstery ➃ I. STRUCTURE ROCHE BOBOIS sofas are designed with a solid wood base (beechwood, poplar or pine) reinforced by several supportive crosspieces in the seat. Laminated and/or composite wood panels reinforce the overall structure. Foam padding of various thicknesses provide cushioning between the skeleton and the covering. II. SUSPENSIONS There are three primary types of suspensions: A steel spring seat suspension interwoven or molded into the foam and covered with a protective canvas. This is the most common type of suspension. S-shaped spring steel linked together in succession. Interwoven elastic bands or webbing. III. DUST CLOTH The dust cover is located beneath the sofa. On most of our sofas it is nailed to the structure like upholstery. IV. MUSLIN COVER On most of our sofas, this cover is very tightly woven with a thick thread designed to last. On certain models, the cloth is quilted and sewn with S and X shapes. For sofas with removable slipcovers, we use cotton cloth pre-washed at a high temperature to prevent shrinkage when the slipcovers are subsequently washed. V. CUSHION UPHOLSTERY 100% Down Cushions. These cusions are made entirely of down feathers sterilized at a high temperature. Partitioned like a comforter to prevent bunching, they must be regularly fluffed to ensure maximum comfort and preserve the natural bounce of the down. The down has a tendency to absorb dampness, causing severe bunching. Once every four months, air the interior of the cushions in the sunlight if possible (or if not, in the dryer at a low temperature) in order to extract all dampness. Down and Foam Cushions. These cushions are most commonly used as back cushions by ROCHE BOBOIS. They combine the comfort of down with the natural elasticity of polyfoam. They are designed in one of two ways: - the core of the cushion is made of foam, covered with a partitioned quilt of down that has been sterilized at a high temperature. - foam cubes are intermingled with down, providing extra support. Foam Cushions. The majority of our sofas are made with Bultex triple-density foam, the lower section made of 35 kg/m 3 (p.2.7 kpa) and the upper section 30 kg/m 3 (p.1.75 kpa) high-resilient Bultex foam, covered with ultra soft 19 kg/m 3 foam. The three types of foam combined are covered with a cotton slipcover. In other cases, seat cushions are made with highresilient, minimum density (30 kg/m3) foam. For all designs, the foam must be broken-in and will obtain optimal comfort after two or three months of use. Spring cushions. For most of our sofas it is possible to have back cushions in feather on foam core with integrated springs and foam seating cushions with integrated springs. VI. LEGS The majority of our sofas are made with solid wood legs, generally beechwood, with the shape and finish varying depending on the design of the sofa.
