1 Ericsson Virtual Router (EVR) is the industry s first carrier-grade virtual router that delivers agility in service and infrastructure deployment based on a truly modular, high performance and resilient architecture.

2 Overview Cloud and virtualization technologies are transforming carrier networks through Network Function Virtualization (NFV). NFV leverages software virtualization to implement network functions in software on industry standard server hardware. Virtualized Network Functions enable new levels of versatility as they can be instantiated on cloud systems, moved as necessary, and even collocated on shared physical hardware, all without the need to changing physical systems. Software Defined Networking (SDN) complements NFV. SDN is a virtually centralized network operating system. It interacts with the control plane of physical and virtual network functions. Thus, it makes more intelligent end-to-end management and orchestration possible, which turns an operator s network into a coherent platform for service-creation. Complementing NFV with SDN will turn operator s network into a coherent service-creation platform The benefits of NFV/SDN include: Service Agility- Drastically enhances service agility by increasing the velocity at which services can be created and delivered. New services can be deployed and scaled without the need to deploy new hardware. Software Defined Networks (SDN) Innovation - NFV enables service providers to rapidly and cost efficiently innovate with new vertical services for different market segments. New revenue streams can be service chained on top of existing offerings such as content filtering, security, and video optimization. Efficiency - Lower operational expenditure (OpEx) is possible by harmonizing infrastructure layers and reducing manual network management through automation Cloud Network Function Virtualization (NFV) EVR enables service providers to accelerate new service introduction Network Function Virtualization (NFV) can be a foundation for innovation throughout the network, including, Routing, Mobile Packet Core, IMS, Subscriber Management, Network Management, and for services such as Firewall and Deep Packet Inspection. It is enabling service providers to speed up new service introduction at a lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). 2

4 Ericsson virtual router Ericsson Virtual Router (EVR) is the industry s first carrier-grade virtual router that delivers agility in service and infrastructure deployment based on a truly modular, high performance and resilient architecture. EVR is designed for flexible deployments, including: Throughout the IP network Within next-generation data centers As part of NFVI (Network Function Virtualization Infrastructure) Because of its modular architecture, EVR is capable of seamlessly scaling out beyond the limitations of a single x86 socket or server. It has been designed to deliver industry leading scale and resiliency for critical carrier applications. EVR offers redundancy and scaling that is 20 times higher than its nearest competitor to lead the industry in elasticity. EVR s modular architecture brings to virtual routing the same advantages as modular purpose-built routers, including separation of control and data planes, scalability and redundancy Each EVR component can be on a seperate virtual machine, hypervisor or server Virtual Backp ane EVR has been built from the ground up for the cloud and NFV era. The full advantages of virtualization cannot be realized by simply porting monolithic software systems to an x86 server. Conceived and designed to increase velocity to virtualization, EVR represents a fundamental rethinking around how virtual network functions will be deployed in next-generation networks and data centers. 5 High performance virtualization A single EVR virtual forwarder can achieve market-leading throughput per its superior design and architecture. Ericsson s Virtual Router is unique in supporting seamless scale-out, enabling up to 20 virtual forwarders to be instantiated as part of a single virtual router. This provides 20-times the raw forwarding capacity of any other virtual router currently available in the market. 6 carrier-grade architecture The EVR modular architecture is based on fully independent control and data planes interconnected with a virtual backplane (cloud fabric). The control plane is made up of one or two virtual router processors (vrp), while the data plane is composed of one to twenty virtual forwarders (vforwarders). These are all instantiated as separate virtual machines and can reside on a common server or fully distributed across up to 22 servers. The vrps and the vforwarders are interconnected with a cloud infrastructure (such as Ericsson Cloud Execution Environment or OpenStack) to form a nonblocking redundant virtual backplane. 7 EVR is the first modular virtual router. All offerings to date have product architectures that bind their control and data planes to the same CPU, tightly linking their deployments to a single system and inherently exposing the entire system to a single point of failure. With EVR each virtual machine (vrp or vforwarder) can be independently allocated physical data center resources. CPU cores, threads and memory can be dynamically allocated to the virtual machines to independently grow the capacity of any EVR component. EVR s advanced design offers real-time protection at both the system level and protocol stack level. EVR separates the control and data planes and protects each to offer carrier-grade non-stop network operation. Pairs of control planes can be deployed to provide state-full hot-standby backup in a 1:1 mode of operation for hitless failover. Furthermore, the control plane can be distributed across fully independent hardware platforms to deliver carrier-class non-stop operation. The data plane is protected by combining multiple virtual forwarders with dual paths and protection protocols (i.e. BFD, ECMP and LAG). This approach provides protection for server, network interface (NIC), virtual NIC and physical link failures. At the protocol-stack level, EVR benefits from Ericsson s field-proven, fault-tolerant, 64-bit IP Operating System IPOS. Under IPOS, all processes are individually re-startable without the need to restart the entire virtual router. Process restarts do not affect data forwarding. IPOS supports routing and MPLS signaling protocol restart for hitless operation. Each process or protocol, e.g., OSPF, runs as an independent task (thread) with its own local memory. This provides rapid process fault isolation and recovery. Software patches are only introduced into the necessary process while all active sessions continue to operate. 8 Hybrid deployment Purpose-built and virtual routers are optimized for different (and complementary) roles throughout the network. Operators can optimize their operations by using both purpose-built and virtualized routers where they each excel. Purpose-built routers are designed to process massive volumes of traffic with dense configurations of physical ports, while virtual routers are designed to be elastic, nimble and quick to deploy. EVR is an ideal NFV routing solution as it can be rapidly deployed in an existing multi-vendor IP network along side purpose-built routers. It is a complete IP router capable of interoperating with other routers using standard interfaces and technologies such as Ethernet, IP/MPLS and BGP. A properly designed and dimensioned network using both purpose-built and virtual routers optimizes the operator s network and business operations. Operators should consider the benefit-to-cost ratio of the choice between a purpose-built router and a virtualized router for each application. For example, control plane intensive applications, such as a Route Reflector or VPN applications with relatively modest traffic, are use cases where a virtual router can offer considerable advantages. With a virtual router, increases in control plane requirements, such as an increase in routing table size, only require instantiating a VM or scaling memory resources. A properly constructed hybrid network offers efficiency, rapid service creation high agility and shortens time-to-market for infrastructure deployment. EVR can easily be introduced into an existing network to operate with the reliability and efficiency that service-providers expect in their networks. 9 Cloud Neutrality Management and Orchestration EVR is designed to leverage Ericsson s Cloud Execution Environment (ECEE) and supports open source and commercial elements of ECEE including virtualization, infrastructure-as-a-service, platformas-a-service, orchestration, security and integrity, which are all essential components for a carrier-grade cloud environment. EVR can run on third-party cloud execution environments such as KVM/Openstack and VMware ESX/vCenter. The Ericsson Virtual Router is easy to deploy and integrate into existing networks. It is managed by a common management framework, shared with the broader Ericsson portfolio. Ericsson Network Management products offer full FCAPS support and north-bound interfaces for OSS/BSS integration. Furthermore EVR can be orchestrated via OpenStack through neutron plugins, or through Puppet and Chef. 9
