Brief Intervention and Motivational Interviewing Tool

This resource was developed by Bronwyn Hagger & Doreen Entwistle, AODP through consultation with Sharon Maroney, Binjari Clinic, Edna Iles & Sheila Miller Wurli Wurlinjang S&E Unit Northern Territory Government and subject to conditions of Copyright act 1968 and the Northern Territory Copyright policy. For the purposes of health education, the information contained therein may be copied and distributed freely as long as its use is acknowledged and is for non-commercial purposes

Extra Information Motivational Interviewing is most useful with clients who are not sure whether they want to change Make sure it is private (not a shame job) Don t be judgemental, critical or confrontational (humbug or bossy) Don t argue roll with resistance (go with the flow) It s the clients choice to change or not to change (self determination) Help the client look at his/her behaviour and how it affects others Ask open ended questions (not yes no questions) epeat back, in your own words, what the person is saying to make sure you have understood what they mean Express empathy (put yourself in the clients shoes) Be genuine and sincere (be honest and real).

Brief Intervention & Motivational Interviewing Objective To teach Indigenous Alcohol & Other Drug workers the principles of Brief Intervention and Motivational Interviewing Description Using the principles of Brief Intervention and Motivational Interviewing this tool is a visual aid that may be used to assist in raising awareness, identifying the harms associated with AOD use and as a visual exploration of a clients situation, eg. where they are now and where they would like to be. Key Ask Say - Ask client a question - Give client extra information Task - Ask client to do an activity Note - Additional information for counsellor w - Pages specifically for worker

Steps to Brief Intervention Step 1 Get to know the person, find out what worries them. Listen to their story. Step 2 ASK: Do you smoke/drink alcohol/take any other drug? If yes, ASK : How much, how often, and how do you feel about your use? Is there anything that you want to change? Step 3 Decide what stage of change the person is at by what they say. Step 4 Write down their stage of change and what advice you gave them. Next time you see the person ask how they are and what changes they have made. einforce any positive changes and do another Brief Intervention if necessary. Note: Do not do a BI when The person doesn t wish to participate or is intoxicated or is too sick or injured or is in a highly emotional state.

Stages of Change Use the chart to determine what stage of change your client is at.
