1 MELLON MAYS UNDERGRADUATE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM Dear Prospective applicant, I am pleased to announce this year s Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship [MMUF] application competition. Through the generosity of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, MMUF program provides intensive intellectual and social support for eligible students planning to matriculate in a PhD program and enter academic careers. For more information about the far- reaching work of the program in the promotion of diversity and academic excellence in graduate education, visit mmuf.org. Bowdoin College has been a participating member of the Mellon Mays Fellowship Program since Our recent alums are studying in leading PhD programs across the country including Stanford, Chicago, Columbia, Michigan, UC, Berkeley and Maryland. Current Mellon Mays fellows are prominent campus leaders, work on impressive research and honors projects, nurture strong relationships with faculty members, and are engage in advance planning for graduate school. Requirements: Intent to obtain a Ph.D. in an MMUF designated field of study Commitment to MMUF goals Participation in biweekly seminars & two annual regional conferences Submit article to MMUF Journal Program Benefits: Supervised research by a Faculty mentor Tailored advising and mentoring Summer /Academic year stipends and up to $10K in undergraduate debt forgiveness GRE and Graduate school preparation Access to a community of scholars We encourage promising students with a B or better grade point average in their second semester sophomore year to apply. Applicants must be American citizens or have a Permanent Resident Visa Status in the United States. The deadline for the submission of the complete application is Friday, March 11, A complete application packet will contain an application packet, which includes seven additional supporting materials, a mentor statement from a faculty member who has agreed to supervise your original research, and a reference letter from a faculty member who has taught you in a classroom setting. Applicants are not permitted to change research proposals after the Fellowship has been awarded. The Mellon Mays Undergraduate Faculty Advisory Committee will select semi- finalists and interview them in late March or early April. 5 2016 CANDIDACY INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTION A complete application packet will contain an original and one copy of the following materials: PERSONAL STATEMENT In 400 to 500 words describe how life experiences and encounters have shaped your personal and intellectual development. The following pointed questions are likely to help in developing your thoughts: Why do I want to participate in the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program? What courses have been most influential in shaping my interests, and motivation to teach at the college/university level? What steps have I already taken to develop my skills as a teacher and researcher? Why am I attracted to my chosen major field of study? In particular, what issues, questions, and themes seem so easily to attract and sustain my intellectual curiosity and why? What basic or fundamental career factors must exist in any college and how will attaining a Ph.D. help me to contribute to eradicating racism and social disparities? ESSAY ON COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY In 200 to 300 words prepare an essay in which you explain how your personal goals and commitment to diversity reflect the legacy of Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, for whom the MMUF program is named. A biography of Dr. Mays can be found at benjamin- e- mays. RESEARCH PROPOSAL In words propose a research theme that will guide your work, if selected as a Mellon Mays Fellow. Include a one- page, preliminary annotated bibliography. Please note that applicants are not permitted to change a research proposal after the Fellowship has been awarded. What are the initial factors that prompted your interest in the original research project you are proposing to conduct during the summer before your junior year? What are your goals and objectives? Include a highlight of any coursework or independent study relating to the research question. How will your mentor help you meet your objectives, and what do you hope to gain from this mentoring relationship. Ideally, your mentor will serve as your senior honors advisor. WRITING SAMPLE An original graded paper with comments from the professor that you feel represents your strongest college- level work [10 pages maximum]. ACADEMIC PLAN OF STUDY THROUGH SENIOR YEAR As you articulate your junior year academic plan, please note that MMUF Fellows are not permitted to study abroad fall semester Junior Year or study abroad for an entire academic year.
