1 A relevant business ethics curriculum Robert Shaw Graduate School of Business Guangdong University of Foreign Studies Victoria Business School Orauariki, New Zealand 29 July 2013

2 2 The internationalization of education has given business ethics new life. The business ethics curriculum in universities appears in one of four stages of development. In some business degrees ethics is a compulsory subject and in others it is largely ignored. Whilst national character, business philosophy and societal aspirations impact on the curriculum, this presentation attempts to justify a business ethics curriculum which has epistemological coherence, academic credibility, and is a response to our global situation.

3 3 Agenda 1. History of business ethics 2. Curriculum decision framework & my preferences 3. The business ethics curriculum in China

4 4 What the Business Schools say 1. Ethics is integral to most disciplines and thus we cover business ethics. 2. Business ethics ensures employees are good. Our compulsory course helps students identify issues. 3. Business ethics is difficult to define so we provide several elective courses. 4. We prepare people for the real world. We present case studies which often involve ethics.
