Data Management Resources at UNC: The Carolina Digital Repository and Dataverse Network November 16, 2010 Data Management Short Course Series Sponsored by the Odum Institute and the UNC Libraries Campus Partners (so far) Carolina Digital Repository (CDR) Carolina Population Center (CPC) Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) Data Intensive Cyber Environments (DICE) ITS Research Computing Odum Institute Office of Sponsored Research (Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research & Econ Devel) RENCI Sheps Center for Health Services Research School of Information and Library Science (SILS)
Carolina Digital Repository (CDR) University-wide initiative to serve as the digital archive for members of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill community Strategic goals: Ensure UNC digital scholarly output is safe and accessible into the future. Provide a digital preservation platform for borndigital special collections and university records.
Brief FAQ CDR serves as UNC s Institutional Repository (IR) Wide collecting scope, includes: Research data and other research materials in digital form Open access journal articles and born- digital special collections Mediated deposit Require deposit agreement prior to ingest Accepts some restricted materials Provides persistent access to research materials for the UNC community Services the CDR does not provide We do not offer: Data manipulation or analysis services Active data storage Data clean-up or scrubbing of sensitive information But, we can help you refer you to units that provide these services.
Process for deposit Meeting with potential depositor to gather basic information about materials Conduct ingest survey to find out more detailed information Depositor signs Deposit Agreement CDR staff obtain materials and metadata for ingest into repository How can the CDR help? CDR resources for new NSF Data Management Plan Req ts Place to deposit inactive data Consultation regarding other data repositories Consultation on metadata generation
Some caveats We can assist with data management plan specifics, if the CDR is indicated as repository. But we are not experts in data management in your domain You have to have a deposit agreement signed with the CDR before you can list it as a repository in your data management plan. Best practices Data management decided at the onset of the project Metadata is key for future access and re-use Plan time to clean-up data while staff resources are still around
Oldest Institute or Center at UNC-CH, founded 1924 Mission: Teaching, research, & service for social sciences Cross-disciplinary focus Odum s Multidisciplinary Mission Diverse areas of study Culture of multidisciplinary collaboration Focus on data reuse History of data stewardship Successful at relationship building
Social Science Archives in Collaboration for Preservation Strategic partnership agreements Coordinated operations Joint best practices Shared federated catalog Shared tools & technologies Part of National Digital Stewardship Network IMLS funded SAFE Archive Audit System Development Dataverse Network Open source platform OAI server DDI metadata standards Federated approach
Overview of How Catalog Works Harvester Search Shared Catalog Online Catalog Metadata Catalog View Information on Data Through Catalog Link to Data at Partner Site Online Analysis Data Mirror Access Data with Extraction and Analysis, through Catalog Direct to Partner Sites DVN Search
DVN Data Analysis DVN Data Ingest Screen
Dataverse uses DDI Metadata Detailed schema adopted by social science community Allows online search functionality Enables thorough online data analysis Actively documents research methodology Odum s Dual Archive Submission Workflows Traditional Typically at end of project Researcher releases custody of data to archive Often an attachment to archivist Virtual Archive Much earlier in research lifecycle Researcher uploads data
What are Virtual Archives? What do Virtual Archives give Researchers? A formal citation to your data files, with a persistent identifier Credit and full control of your data Your own branding for your Dataverse Professional preservation of your data A way to make your work more visible and searchable Provides structure for data management
Key Functions of Virtual Archives Virtual archives extend preservation to researchers Provides automated ingest tools Provides automated metadata creation Begins early in the research data lifecycle Allows archivist to oversee the process Creates metadata early before it is lost Facilitates data and documentation management Automatically creates detailed variable-level metadata Odum Data Management Resources Short Courses How to create Virtual Archives Data management series Consultations Sample DMPs Custom DMPs Grant data management Custom Data Archive Solutions De-identification Metadata creation
