7 PROPOSED ASSESSMENT TERMINOLOGY AND DEFINITIONS The committee members realize there will be numerous assessment terms used across the Institution as the culture of on-going assessment evolves at Greenville Technical College. The following four terms were identified by the committee members as the most critical and widely misunderstood terms in need of clarification. The committee members anticipate these four terms and definitions will encourage good assessment practices and create a standard assessment language at the Institution. The committee members of the Assessment Timeline and Terminology Ad Hoc Committee propose the following four assessment terms and definitions be approved for the assessment practices of Greenville Technical College. The terms submitted for approval are College-Wide General Education Outcomes, Program Student Learning Outcomes, Program Process Outcomes, and Administrative Outcomes. College-Wide General Education Outcomes The College-Wide General Education Outcomes enable students to develop the level of knowledge, skills, values, and abilities important for all college graduates. These outcomes are embedded across the curriculum in all associate degree programs and, as appropriate, in the diplomas and certificates. The blank left in the College-Wide General Education Outcomes is to leave a space for the number of College-Wide General Education Outcomes that are being developed. When the final number of College-Wide General Education Outcomes is approved that number will be included in this definition. Program Student Learning Outcomes These outcomes are specific to student learning at the program level and are detailed, measurable statements identifying what a student is to know, think, or do upon completion of a program or learning experience. Program Process Outcomes These outcomes are specific to the processes of academic programs and non-academic units and are detailed, measurable statements identifying what a program or unit is to do, accomplish, or achieve. Administrative Outcomes These outcomes are specific to the effectiveness of an administrative or support entity and are detailed, measurable statements describing what the entity is to do, accomplish, or achieve. 6
8 ASSESSMENT WORKSHOPS The Assessment Council provided the Assessment Timeline and Terminology Ad Hoc Committee with information on Linda Suskie s Assessing Student Learning series to research the opportunity of providing this series at Greenville Technical College. The series will be led by Linda Suskie, via internet, of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and will be presented in three seminars, Getting Started With Student Learning Assessment, Choosing a Published Instrument to Assess Student Learning, and Developing Tools and Strategies to Assess Student Learning. Getting Started With Student Learning Assessment This seminar will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. and will give the participants an understanding of what assessment is and how assessment relates to the teaching/learning process. Those who attend this seminar will learn how to write student learning outcomes, how to review their curriculum so it aligns with those outcomes, and how to identify and implement teaching strategies to achieve their established student learning outcomes. Participants will also discuss the strengths and weaknesses of several different assessment best practices and who are the potential audiences of assessment results and reports. Choosing a Published Instrument to Assess Student Learning This seminar will be held on Thursday, December 4, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. and will discuss published and standardized testing. Included will be advantages and disadvantages of published and home-grown tools, published assessment instruments (MAPP, CAAP, CBASE, and CLA), and how to interpret data received from these instruments. Attention will be given to deciding what the appropriate role of published instruments in each assessment program is. Developing Tools and Strategies to Assess Student Learning This seminar will be held on Thursday, December 12, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. and will discuss characteristics of assessment tools, direct and indirect measures, which tools are most efficient, and what assessment might already be occurring at the institution. Participants will learn how to develop rubrics to evaluate student work, how to create multiple-choice tests to assess more than basic understanding, and how to use reflective writing to assess attitudes and values. The seminar series will be funded by the Assessment budget and the process of purchasing the series has begun. All three seminars are scheduled to occur in Dental 405. When the details concerning the seminars are final an invitation will be sent out to the appropriate groups who have been identified by the Assessment Timeline and Terminology Ad Hoc Committee. 7
9 As describe below, the committee members identified groups at Greenville Technical College that would benefit from these seminars. The groups who will be asked to attend are: The President s Cabinet The Assessment Council The Assessment Timeline and Terminology Ad Hoc Committee The Committee on Developing the College-Wide General Education Outcomes The Academic Deans The Department Heads The Arts and Sciences Assessment Committee 8
