2 COURSE PHILOSOPHY Theatre is a collaborative art. The more the participants understand about all aspects of the art, the greater the potential for creative freedom. All of the visual elements create and support the environment we see on stage. The mechanisms and techniques of scenery, lighting, props, costumes, makeup and publicity form the basis of a toolbox from which we can draw to control these raw materials. COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. To understand and become familiar with theatrical terminology. 2. To understand and experience the use of theatrical equipment. 3. To assist in the pre-production and production aspects in all areas of theatre. 4. To participate in, and practice theatrical collaboration METHODS & COURSE REQUIREMENTS All levels of this course are the practical application of the art and craft of theatre. This is a hands-on course. TH 113 is freshman level production course that accompanies your technical courses 122, 123, and 124. TH 213 is your floating production, 1 credit hour course that all majors must complete. TH 313 is your 2 credit hour production course that all majors must complete. TH 413 is a senior level production course, and is 1 credit. Scholarship students must take one of the appropriate courses according to their year of study. The student may be assigned a running crew responsibility for one NAU theatre production. In some cases, due to work conflicts or family responsibilities, other arrangements can be made. See appropriate class Instructor with any scheduling concerns that you may have. There is also the possibility that working on an NAU Opera production could fulfill the running crew requirement. This substitution is at the discretion of the Theatre Faculty member to which you are assigned. A position on an opera running crew is in addition to your 35 required lab hours. The student must fill out the attached crew request form complete with a schedule of classes, and submit it to the instructor of record for the class (see above). All lab hours will be completed between the hours of 1:00pm and 5:00pm weekdays, and occasionally on weekends. The production assignments and lab hours will be posted on the NAU CALL BOARD and it is the student s responsibility to check the board daily for notices concerning workshop. 3 Collaboration 10% ACCOUNTABILITY AND ATTENDANCE: Your lab hours require that you fill out a time card and record your time in the lab (this will be provided by you lab Instructor). A member of the faculty or staff, or a production assistant, must sign off daily on your time card. Details of this procedure will be explained to you at your first lab call (does not apply to those working in the costume shop. Please see Nancy Parr for costume shop instructions). Your running crew position requires that you arrive on time for your call and immediately sign in with the stage manager. Failure to do so will result in your being marked as tardy or absent. Being tardy three or more times to a running crew call will result in a full letter grade reduction. Failure to appear for a running crew call will result in failure of the class. Consideration will only be given under extreme circumstances with proper documentation and approval from the Dept. Chair. The Theatre Department Attendance Policy is enforced for lab calls: Every student enrolled in a Theatre Department course will be allowed three (3) sick days or unexcused absences. Beyond this limit of three absences, the student s final grade will be lowered a one-half-letter grade for every unexcused absence. Emergencies, deaths in the family or severe illnesses must be accompanied by proper documentation in order to be excused. Arriving late to class or leaving class early will be considered an absence. Students must provide an institutional form to the professor for Official University Event absences. Students with ten absences will be administratively dropped with an F. E-LEARNING CENTER MyFoundations Math Modules are suitable for supporting student success in NON-MATH COURSES where students need to be competent in math in order to be successful in non-math courses. IMPORTANT If you are receiving a theatre tuition scholarship, you must be enrolled in workshop or you will lose your scholarship. Any question concerning your tuition scholarship should be addressed to: Kathleen M. McGeever, Chair, Department of Theatre. Students that have not completed the core tech requirements are only allowed to serve on one production running crew per semester. If you do not have six hours per week in your schedule available for lab, then you must drop the course. Lab hours will be assigned in a minimum of 2 hours blocks. Your production running crew assignment will be posted on the callboard. See your area supervisor for your work schedule. You must check the callboard daily. SCHEDULING You will be assigned specific days and hours to report to the shop in which you will be working based upon the schedule that you provide. You are required to attend your work call hours as they are assigned, and must check the callboard for your assignment. You are responsible for knowing your crew call times. Your area supervisor will notify you of any changes to your schedule. Please fill out the following 2 pages, and return to your area supervisor or course instructor. Production Workshop 3 Fall 2014
