1 About the GIT Blended Learning Program The (GIT) is a foundation training activity designed to provide new investigators with the necessary skills and knowledge to transition from the patrol function to the investigative function. The course emphasizes the concepts and principles of good case management practices and the core competencies of a general investigator. In 2007, the Ontario Police College and the Canadian Police Knowledge Network collaborated to adapt the OPC s GIT course into a two-part blended learning course. Officers seeking GIT certification can now complete Part I via a web-based course from CPKN and Part II in a condensed classroom session from the OPC or an OPC-designated police service (in Ontario). Part II may also be delivered by other inservice trainers in other jurisdictions. This new delivery format reduces the OPC s original 2 week classroom training course to an estimated 16 online hours and 5 days in the classroom. Pre-Requisites GIT is an introductory level investigation course and there are no pre-requisites. However, officers are typically selected by their police service to attend this course. Part I (online) of this course must be successfully completed prior to attending Part II (classroom). Registering to GIT Registration for Part I and Part II of this course are typically arranged by a participant s training department. All registrations must be authorized by appropriate personnel (i.e. Training Supervisor). Part I - For group registrations: 1. An approving authority from the training section must download and complete the Group Registration Form from 2. The training manager or an approving authority must sign Page 1 of this form to verify the participants enrolment in the course. 3. FAX the completed Page 1 to CPKN at (toll free). 4. Page 2 can also be attached via FAX or can be completed electronically and ed to CPKN at [email protected]. 5. Once the registration is processed by CPKN, every participant will receive three s containing their username, password, and login instructions.
2 6. Training managers are asked to request that all participants carefully read the s for directions regarding accessing CPKN s system, the course and support information. Individuals can register for Part I using the Individual Registration Form. Complete instructions are provided on CPKN s website. Registration to Part II can be arranged through a designated GIT Coordinator. In Ontario, contact the OPC s Registrar for further information: Nicole Adams Registrar, Ontario Police College Tel: [email protected] In other jurisdictions, Part I of this course must be assessed by appropriate personnel to ensure it meets the training requirements of that service/region. Interested participants are urged to contact their Training Department for further information. GIT Payment Policy Part I (online) of the GIT course is subject to a $200 (+ GST) registration fee per participant. Payment for Part I can be made directly to CPKN using cheque or credit card, or a Police Service can be invoiced. If applicable, payment for Part II of the course is made directly to the delivering agency. The following policies apply to the registration fee for Part I: 1. Police Services will be invoiced for all participants registered to the GIT course two (2) weeks prior to start of the classroom portion of the course. In the event of a participant withdrawal within the two week period before the classroom session, the registration fee is non-refundable *. * In extenuating circumstances CPKN will review participant withdrawals and substitutions on a case-by-case basis. Training coordinators are encouraged to contact CPKN in these cases. 2. A full registration fee is applicable to any participant who has accessed the GIT online content at any time, regardless of whether the participant has completed the course. 3. Participant substitutions may occur at no cost prior to the two week period provided that the original participant has not accessed the course content. Otherwise, the substitute participant will be subject to the full registration fee. 4. Payment is due regardless of whether a participant passes or fails the course.
3 5. Participant access to Part I will remain open for one year from the date of registration. During this time, participants can access more than thirty e-working tools and other resources designed to support operational activities. Part I: Online Component The online component of GIT is delivered via CPKN s Learning Management System (LMS). The LMS not only securely delivers content, but also authenticates users, tracks user progress, and produces various reports for authorized police service training coordinators. Part I of GIT is accessed via the Login portal on the CPKN website. Participants can access Part I of the GIT Blended Learning Program by logging in via CPKN s website. Usernames and passwords are provided to participants by . Part I of GIT contains basic concepts and foundational knowledge-based course material that has been adapted into an e-learning format. Using case scenarios and experiential exercises, Part I is a prerequisite to Part II and is an introduction to the following subject areas:
4 Introduction to Criminal Investigation Ontario Major Case Management Crime Scene Management & Security Notebooks Canvassing Collection & Preservation of Physical Evidence Human Sources Operational Planning Victims Statement Law Evidence Death Investigation Media Note: Because this course is adapted from the OPC s, some portions of this course are specific to Ontario jurisdictions. Services outside of Ontario are encouraged to contact CPKN for further information on how to use this online course for delivery in their region. Estimated Time to Complete The online portion of the GIT is estimated to take 16 hours to complete. This can be done according to the participant s own pace and schedule from any Internet-connected computer. Testing Requirements There is an exam associated with each module of the online component, with the exception of the Human Sources module where participants must prepare an assignment for the classroom component. Participants must achieve a score of 80% or higher in each exam to successfully complete Part I. Participants are given three attempts to achieve this. If a participant does not achieve 80% after the third attempt, he/she should contact the GIT Coordinator or his/her Training Supervisor. Certification On successful completion of Part I, participants can print a Certificate of Completion from the LMS. A report of all successful participants will also be provided to the classroom instructor. Technical Support It is recommended for all police services signing up to CPKN courses that IT personnel run a systems check for the Minimum System Requirements. They should also contact CPKN Support Services to gain temporary access to the course in order to ensure there are no technical difficulties or infrastructure constraints. Once registered, participants experiencing technical difficulties with the Part I of GIT can contact CPKN Support Specialists by toll free telephone ( ) or ([email protected]) Monday Friday, 8 am - 7 pm EST. Outside of business hours, learners can leave a message detailing the technical problem. A Support Specialist will contact the learner within one business day. CPKN also provides a Technical FAQ page at
5 Content Support Participants are encouraged to contact the instructor who is conducting Part II of the GIT course for clarification on any content presented in Part I of the course. For further assistance, please contact: Thomas Page GIT Coordinator, Ontario Police College Tel: (519) [email protected] Part II: Classroom Component Part II of the GIT course may vary depending on the delivery agency or the jurisdiction. For more information about the Part II syllabus, registration fees, scheduled delivery dates and locations, or other details, please contact the GIT Coordinator in your area.
