5 Useful Information Supported Exchange 2003 Installations The following Exchange 2003 installations have all been tested and are supported. If you have an Exchange installation that is not included in the list below, please ensure you contact your local Support desk before installing MSE. Windows Server Setup Microsoft Exchange Version Microsoft.NET Framework Version Windows Server 2003 Standard x32 Edition R2 SP2 Exchange 2003 Standard SP2.NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 & 3.5 SP1 Note:.NET Framework 4 is supported provided that previous versions are also installed on the server. n-tier Environments You may wish to install MSE on a server other than an Exchange 2003 server, such as an Apps server. In order for MSE to function on a separate server, you will need to ensure that the server is compatible with those listed above, i.e. Windows Server version and.net Framework version. If you are installing MSE on a separate box for use with Exchange 2003, you will need to install the Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI Client and Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) libraries before commencing the MSE installation. Permission Requirements There are various user accounts and permissions required for the successful installation and running of MSE. NT Service Account MSE is a Windows Service and therefore requires an account to run under. The account under which the service runs must have Logon as a Service permission, write permissions to the directory where MSE is to be installed as well as the dat, log and tmp directories. If the account does not have full access permissions, an error dialog will appear, giving the option to attempt to grant the required permissions for each folder. See Exchange Mailbox Account below for additional information. Exchange Mailbox Account This is the address of the NT Service Account used to connect to the Exchange Server. Mimecast recommends that this be the same user under which the MSE Service runs. The account must have ExMerge permissions (i.e. Send As, Receive As and Full Mailbox Access) to all the mailboxes that are included in any Message Stubbing, Folder Replication and Folder Retention tasks. Mimecast Ltd, 2010 Mimecast Services for Exchange 2003 Installation Guide v 6.0 Nov 10 Page 5
6 Mimecast Account You will need a Mimecast administrator account in order to bind MSE to Mimecast. This account must have permissions to the Account Options module within Mimecast (as a minimum), the Allow Logon option checked within User Directory Domains Internal Domains and must have a local password assigned. MSE Logging MSE and the associated extensions can create detailed log files. These are invaluable for resolving any issues. When installing MSE, you are asked to specify a location for the log files. As the files may get quite large over time, you may wish to place them on a separate drive. The default installation will place the log files under: \Mimecast Services for Exchange \log A main log file is created daily for each day the service is running and will be named mseservice.yyyymmddhhmmss.log, where yyyymmddhhmmss is the ISO date/time of when the log was rolled over (this occurs around midnight every day). In addition, each extension also has a log file named mse-xxx.id.yyyymmddhhmmss.log which is created each time the extension is executed (i.e. each time the task runs), where xxx relates to: AUD for Auto-Update Deployment (scheduled updates of MSE) CAL for Calendar Replication MCS for Message Content Stubbing MMS for Mailbox Metadata Synchronization (folder replication) FBR for Folder Based Retention Each of these logs will be in a directory off the main \log directory: \Mimecast Services for Exchange \log \AUD \CAL \FBR \MCS \MMS Page 6 Mimecast Services for Exchange 2003 Installation Guide v 6.0 Nov 10 Mimecast Ltd, 2010
