2 AUSKF NEWSLETTER Page two Highlights from the April 14 &15,2012 AUSKF Board of Directors Meeting, Seattle, Washington: Reported by Norman K. Otani, AUSKF Secretary-Historian. [Note: This report is being made pending the approval of the minutes of the April 14 & 15, 2012 A USKF Board of Directors meeting; the reader is forewarned that this information is subject to modification/ I. OLD BUSINESS: A. AUSKF Liability Insurance [Updates]: (1.) The previously approved additional laibility insurance coverage for the AUSKF board of directors and officers at a cost of $50 per individual director and officer, remains pending as the application form previously submitted was out of date. (2.) The current AUSKF Liability Insurance policy coverage amounts was reviewed; it was determined that an increase in the amount of liability insurance coverage is not needed by AUSKF. Exception: if needed by an educational institution in New York or California [rider is available]. Also, there is a possibility that a new insurance provider will be located by the end of (3) After making an inquiry about a 3-year liability insurance coverage policy; the AUSKF was advised that only a annual renewable liability insurance coverage policy is available. The AUSKF is allowed to make a one-month in advance premium payment for the annual/renewal; and, if necessary the AUSKF will be allowed to make the annual/renewal payment in February. The current medical insurance coverage is provided as a secondary coverage; after the individual medical insurance is used. There is a $250 deductible and maximum $100,000 medical expense coverage. B. Committee Action Items: (1.) Budget/Finance: (a.) Transfer of duties and accounts from T. Kato to T. Inoshita. It was reported that this was done. (B) New member data base. It was reported that after review of the previous Excel format member database; after consultation with an IT expert, it was recommended that this task be out-sourced to a experienced IT person. The proposed new AUSKF member database would utilize Microsoft Office 365, and it would be a password protected website program which would assist the implementation of the AUSKF Virtual office and other AUSKF needed functions. Some of the requested features would be to have the individual AUSKF member dues payment history, promotion rank cumulative history record, etc. Due to the time consumption to input AUSKF promotion kendo ranks, it was recommended to hire a college student to be paid $ 10/hour to do this task effective The input of the older AUSKF AUSKf promotion kendo rank records will be completed by the current AUSKF financial officer. It was mentioned that one of the AUSKF administrative problems is when a kendoist uses a different name when being granted a promotion rank; especially, if a duplicate menjo is requested using a different name, this creates confusion. After further discussion, it was decided that the current AUSKF financial officer will send a letter to the AUSKF member federations to submit the correct spelling of each of the dojo members' names, and giving NOTICE that the list of dojo member names submitted will thereafter, be the "official" AUSKF names used for their dojo members' promotion exam menjo, etc. To ensure future correct identification of the AUSKF members issued the promotion exam menjo; it was suggested to place the AUSKF ID number on each of the menjo issued by AUSKF. (2.) Education: (a.) AUSKF Spring 2012 Education Tour. It was reported that AJKF approved Takashi Futagoishi, sensei 8 Dan Hanshi, conducted an excellent kendo seminar in New York, Atlanta, Boston and Detroit in February (b.) In March 2012, it was reported that the AJKF Overseas Jr. High School Tour program was conducted in Spokane, San Jose and Los Angeles. (c.) The 2012 AUSKF Summer Kendo Camp will be held on July 20-22, 2012, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The host federation [SCKF] reported that a Las Vegas Kendo Dojo member is a professor at the UNLV, and has assisted the AUSKF to use a gymnasium facility on the UNLV campus. There will be two (2) AJKF imstructors sent for the 2012 AUSKF Summer Kendo Camp. There will be a Bokuto Ni Yoru Kendo Kihon-waza Keiko seminar on Friday, July 20,2012. (d.) The Team USA Giving Back -PPG was formally approved and adopted. (3.) Promotion: (a.) AUSKF members taking Foreign Kendo Federation Examinations in KKA but do not follow AUSKF promotion exam regulations: e.g. Did not receive AUSKF permission to take foreign kendo federation promotion examination, or is not eligible. Discussion held, and it was agreed that each case must clearly determine what are the facts; e.g. is kendoist now living in Korea?, etc. Then, AUSKF only needs to assist to verify that prior kendo rank was valid. During this discussion, a separate issue involving the Western Kendo Federation {"WKF"] was raised about the need to clarify which of the dojos are paid AUSKF members, and those dojos which no longer have active AUSKF members. Jeff Marsten, AUSKF Exeutive VP agreed to send a letter to WKF and to research this matter as an action item. (b.) PPG Appendix A. Section VII. Revocation of Rank/Shogo. This matter needs development of the specific grounds to be defined.; discussion about having an AUSKF Code of Conduct such as one that

With the recent approval of the AUSKF Virtual Office concept; a more efficient medium [Office 365]is proposed to be utilized to implement the AUSKF kendo sensei oral history project into a website program that can store and gather this kendo historical material in a AUSKF maintained archive. Nosu Industries, et. al., which resulted in a 2012 decision in which GET prevailed and was awarded a judgment of $1.5 million; in addition a protective order was issued by the U.S. District Court barring the sales of Nosyuiaido products in the United States, Canada, Australia and Great Britain. Also, it was reported that the litigant [GET] was considering suing the AUSKF due to having participated in a Minnesota laido event [Note: AUSKF approved two iaido sensei to assist as instructors at this event] which provided the venue for a vendor to sell Nosu Industries products. There was an inquiry about what steps that the AUSKF should take to protect itself from future legal liability stemming from this specific lawsuit and the effect of the protective order barring the sales of Nosyuiaido products in the United States. It i»/ac Hgci'Hf-H tli t the- AI the hiring of outside legal counsel to develop a two (2) page contract to indemnify the AUSKF whenever a vendor of iaido related products seeks to sell such items at an AUSKF sanctioned event or venue. Part II of II:
7 AIICKP MCVA/QI FTTFR Page seven: GUEST AUTHOR: John Prough: JODO? WHAT IS JODO? Part II. [continued] MODERN JODO In 1930, Shimizu Takaji Shihan moved to Tokyo. In addition to teaching at the Kodokan and various Tokyo dojos; Shimizu sensei was Shihan to the newly formed KeiJojutsu police units. In the late 1960's, similar to laido, AJKF Seitei Jodo of 12 Kata was created from mostly SMR Kata. The Jo as used in the Jodo-bu of the AJKF is 128 cm (50.4 inches) long with a diameter of 2.4 cm (0.94 inch). JODQ COMES TO THE U.S. A major connection between the SMR and various American Budo-ka was Donn Draeger. His never-ending interest in Budo of all kinds gave him While Shimizu sensei was entry into most schools and teachers. In establishing what might be called the 1970, a demonstration of SMR Jo-jutsu Tokyo style Shindo Muso Ryu was performed at Camp Bushido by ["SMR"] Jo-jutsu in Tokyo and othershimizu Takaji, Kaminoda Tsunemori, locales; Otofuji Ichizo Shihan in and Donn Draeger. As in Tokyo in Fukuoka focused training in an older 1920, this demonstration stirred great version of Jo-jutsu. The result was nterest in Jodo among martial arts two styles of SMR Jo-jutsu: the practitioners in the West. But it did not Tokyo Jo-jutsu and the Fukuoka Jo- result in a permanent place for Jodo. jutsu. This SMR connection to the police proved highly desirable. Because it was a major part of the police training, SMR Jo-jutsu was not banned by GHQ at the end of World War II. Through a land gift by Suzuki Michio, Shimizu sensei was todo Dojos were established slowly over time. Two of them are described below as examples of many other Dojo. August 1976, Mitsuzuka Kenshi nsei participated in a laido and Jodo icminar held by the New York IAIKAI. itsuzuka sensei was a retired Tokyo liceman who had rank in Kendo and able to open his own Dojo in Tokyo, laido, and had been training in Jodo the Rembukan. Among the major changes by Shimizu sensei was the expansion of the Kihon to 12 Waza. This became necessary as a method of teaching up to 45 policemen at a time. The Tokyo Jo-jutsu was the precursor to modern Jodo. While the Rembukan did not survive Shimizu sensei's death in 1978, he is credited with establishing SMR in Tokyo and opening it to a much larger community, including Americans. Shimizu sensei trained many people in Manchuria, and it is estimated that he trained over 1.5 million people. /ith Kaminoda sensei. By the end of the two-week seminar the more experienced students had a good start in the Kihon and Seitei gata of Jodo. During the seminar in New York City, Mitsuzuka sensei had discussions with a Aikido sensei who had a Dojo in the south of France. This resulted in a series of seminars in France under the care of the French Aikido Federation. Through this connection, Mitsuzuka sensei attracted more Aikido students to train with him in his Tokyo Dojo in the Police station at Yotsuya San Chome. Mitsuzuka sensei returned to New York to teach laido and Jodo in the newly formed Japanese Swordsmanship Society (JSS). JSS continued training in Jodo. David Pearl who had returned from training in Japan with a 3-Dan Jodo; introduced Martyn Price and Harvey King, both of whom were students of JSS, to Matsumura Shigehiro, Jodo 8 Dan Hanshi. Martyn Price has returned to Australia and has stopped training because of a bad back. Harvey King continues teaching Seitei Jodo and Fukuoka SMR in Brooklyn, New York. In Maryland, Rick Polland, established his Beikoku Rembukan in His training in Jodo began in 1972, when he started studying the Jodo Kihon with Bruce Brown. Rick Polland accompanied Bruce Brown to train at the Rembukan in Tokyo. Six months later, Rick Polland, came back to the United States, where he invited Ohtsuka Tadahiko and Miyake Mariko to demonstrate Jodo. Rick Polland later returned to Rembukan in Japan in 1976 to continue his Jodo. After his return from Japan in 1978, he started several Jodo classes and conducted demontrations in different locations as he moved about America over the decade before establishing his own Dojo in Maryland. In addition to his own classes, Rick Polland, introduced Jodo in other Dojos by holding seminars, often with teachers from Japan. Rick Polland continues giving seminars and conducting demonstrations of

Phil Relnick holds a Menkyo Kaiden in Jodo, where he teaches in Seattle. His sensei is Nishioka Tsuneo who is a student of Shimizu Shihan. In Hawaii, Jodo has been established by the efforts of Quentin Chambers and Wayne Muramoto. The Jikishin Kai is an organization in California and other locations, where they study laido and Jodo under Shimabukuro Masayuki sensei. His sensei is Miura Takeyuki Hirefusa who studied with Nakajima Asaakichi, one of Shimizu Takaji's senior students. Summary Many more than those mentioned in this article are doing Jodo in the USA. The addition of Jodo as a workshop at the 2011 AUSKF laido Summer Camp and future events will hopefully provide an opportunity for the AUSKF to bring new members into the federation. At the same time, the possible official formation of a Jodo section to the AUSKF, would give the current Kendo-ka and^s laido-ka a chance to learn new skills Also, contributions included the notes and observations by the author and others.
