University Press Scholarship Online You are looking at 1-10 of 45 items for: keywords : coaching Transferring Implicit and Tacit Knowledge David W. DeLong in Lost Knowledge: Confronting the Threat of an Aging Workforce Published in print: 2004 Published Online: September 2007 ISBN: eisbn: acprof:oso/ This chapter recognizes that successful retention of essential implicit knowledge and tacit knowledge requires more indirect practices that focus on creating a positive context for knowledge transfer. These practices are described with detailed examples of how they are used specifically to enhance knowledge retention. Approaches described in this chapter include storytelling, mentoring or coaching, after-action reviews, and communities of practice. Each section includes critical success factors to consider during implementation. Solution-Focused Life Coaching Suzy Green in Solution-Focused Brief Therapy: A Handbook of Evidence-Based Practice Published in print: 2011 Published Online: September 2011 ISBN: eisbn: acprof:oso/ This chapter reviews studies on solution-focused life coaching. Solutionfocused life coaching is an increasingly popular approach aimed at assisting individuals to make desired changes in their personal or work life or to enhance their overall level of happiness and well-being. Research is currently embryonic; however; the studies conducted so far are encouraging and suggest that this is a promising approach for mental health professionals to consider. It offers an evidence-based methodology for those practitioners already providing coaching services and also for those working within a traditional counseling model who may wish to expand their practices and offer life coaching as an additional Page 1 of 6
service. Early research suggests that evidence-based life coaching may have the potential to be a useful change methodology. It s just the gym : Female Physical Educators, Martha H. Verbrugge in Active Bodies: A History of Women s Physical Education in Twentieth-Century America Published in print: 2012 Published Online: September 2012 ISBN: eisbn: acprof:oso/ Chapter 7 (the counterpart to Chapter 1) examines the status of white and black female physical educators, coaches, and administrators in academic institutions as their profession matured and women s sports underwent a revolution (following the enactment of Title IX in 1972). Covering several generations of female teachers in grades K-12 through college-level, the chapter considers their backgrounds, training and credentials, and workplace challenges. Many instructors and coaches dealt with low status, multiple responsibilities, entrenched homophobia, and new administrative structures in athletics and physical education. The chapter asks why the field s marginalization of different members persisted, even as gender and racial equality improved elsewhere in American society during the second half of the twentieth century. Coaching and Positive Psychology Anthony M. Grant and Michael J. Cavanagh in Designing Positive Psychology: Taking Stock and Moving Forward Published in print: 2011 Published Online: May 2011 ISBN: eisbn: acprof:oso/ The past decade has seen the use of coaching in personal, health, workplace, and executive settings grow from being a novel and somewhat derided methodology to a mainstream activity in business organizations and health settings worldwide. This chapter takes stock of the current state of coaching research and practice, and then highlights how coaching could make important contributions to the future of positive psychology. In taking stock of the present state of play in coaching, it begins with definitions and delineations of coaching. It then reports on the professional status of coaching and the bodies that seek to accredit and organize coaches. Research into the efficacy of coaching is Page 2 of 6
briefly discussed. The chapter presents an overview of a future coachingrelated research and practice agenda. It concludes by outlining some potentially fruitful lines of inquiry for future work in this emerging and exciting sub-field of psychological research. Looks Good on Paper?: Using In-Depth Personality Assessment to Predict Leadership Performance Leslie Pratch Published in print: 2014 Published Online: November 2015 ISBN: eisbn: Item type: book Publisher: Columbia University Press DOI: / columbia/ The author is a practicing psychologist who focuses on assessing and coaching executives who occupy or are candidates for top positions in business organizations. In this book she shares insights from more than twenty years of executive evaluations and offers an empirical method of identifying executives who will be effective within organizations and to flag those who will ultimately fail by evaluating hidden aspects of personality and character. The book compares candidates with impressive careers and tries to determine which are likely to act with consistently high integrity and exhibit sound, timely judgment when faced with unanticipated business problems. Central to effective leadership is a psychological quality called active coping, which the author defines and explores by referencing case studies, historical figures, and her own scholarly work. This book speaks not only to those in hiring positions and their advisors but also more widely to leaders and anyone who wishes to learn more about their own character and the abilities of those around them. The book offers knowledge, asks questions, and challenges common perceptions, providing a practical tool for those in business and for the general reader. Developing Systemic Recovery Skills Maureen Duffy and Len Sperry in Mobbing: Causes, Consequences, and Solutions Published in print: 2012 Published Online: May 2012 ISBN: eisbn: acprof:oso/ This chapter builds on the previous two chapters in addressing individual recovery from mobbing and the utilization of organizational support systems in responding to mobbing. It outlines the systemic intervention skills that professionals and organizations need to develop to provide Page 3 of 6
platforms for sustained individual and organizational recovery from mobbing. A discussion is provided of integrative individual organizational psychotherapeutic considerations and specific organizational strategies and interventions designed to provide systemic recovery from mobbing. It is proposed that, since mobbing affects the organizations in which it occurs and to which mobbing victims may be returning, organizationally based interventions aimed at changing a mobbing-prone culture are as crucial as individually based interventions. Organizationally based interventions, including mediation, executive coaching, and other affirmative anti-mobbing strategies, are described. Afterword: Nancy Winstel Robert K. Wallace in Thirteen Women Strong: The Making of a Team Published in print: 2008 Published Online: September 2011 ISBN: eisbn: Publisher: University Press of Kentucky DOI: / kentucky/ This book describes its philosophy on basketball coaching, the coaching process, and insights into areas that are important. A very important role for the coach is to assist student-athletes in making their dreams come true. The coach's job is to help them achieve it. The coach does this by preparing them for competition and by giving them the tools to be successful at a high level. This may mean teaching them fundamentals, getting them in shape, or instilling mental toughness. All coaches should be passionate about the sport they coach. There is no greater reward to a coach than to have a group of young ladies go through the process of preseason conditioning, practice, and game preparation and then, on game day, to go out and play the game as one and be successful doing it. London Modes of Sociability: The Visit and the Coach Susan E. Whyman in Sociability and Power in Late Stuart England: The Cultural Worlds of the Verneys Published in print: 2002 Published Online: October 2011 ISBN: eisbn: acprof:oso/ This chapter looks at the development of a polite urban culture in new ways. It shows how John learned the rules of politeness while he was Page 4 of 6
still a merchant. Long before John inherited, he learned the rules of London's polite society. It was symbolised by the urban visit and the conspicuous use of the coach. The discussion illustrates the development of politeness by describing John's entry into society. It shows how a group of supposedly dependent women controlled daily rites of sociability. The dynamic, urban culture that confronted John was a blend of civic humanism, natural law, and commercial inputs. London was its location, politeness its doctrine, and courtesy manuals its texts. The gentleman became its ideal type. Unlike previous generations, John made use of the London marriage market. Equipping the Royal Representative Helen Jacobsen in Luxury and Power: The Material World of the Stuart Diplomat, Published in print: 2011 Published Online: January 2012 ISBN: eisbn: acprof:oso/ This chapter looks at the practical aspects of sending an ambassador abroad. It details their diplomatic pay and expenses, and the material objects with which they were furnished in their role as the king s representative. These comprised large quantities of silver plate from the Jewel House and a chair of state and canopy from the Great Wardrobe; diplomats were also provided with allowances for commissioning the monarch s portrait and gala coaches for their formal entry. During the fifty years after 1660 a notable evolution occurred in which diplomats played a greater personal role in the fashioning of their royal perquisites, and during which the dictates of elite fashion affected the way they looked and the goldsmiths, joiners, and craftsmen who were employed. By 1714 an ambassador s official environment had become as much a reflection of his own tastes as those of diplomatic precedence. Procurement and Display Helen Jacobsen in Luxury and Power: The Material World of the Stuart Diplomat, Published in print: 2011 Published Online: January 2012 ISBN: eisbn: acprof:oso/ Fine art was only one area of luxury consumption: clothes, coaches, textiles, and interior furnishings were generally much more expensive Page 5 of 6
than paintings, and highly sought after. English diplomats abroad were exposed to all areas of cultural life and used their access to foreign luxury goods to procure fashionable items for their friends, patrons, and even for the king. An understanding of the importance of the visual trappings of majesty was potentially as useful politically at the later Stuart courts as a military or legal training. Beds, textiles, furniture, wall hangings, silver, and coaches were bought by diplomats; when brought back to England they had a rarity or novelty factor, or put the owner in the height of fashion; either way, they lent the owner a prestige and standing that set him apart from the crowd.
