1 WALTERS TECHNICAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND TWO-YEAR ASSOCIATE DEGREE TECHNICAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM The Walters Technical Scholarship Fund was established in 1989 and is administered by the BMO Private Bank of Wausau, Wisconsin. The program is dedicated to encouraging the graduating seniors of northern Wisconsin high schools to further their education by attending one of the sixteen (16) technical colleges of the Wisconsin Technical College System. The fund provides scholarships to graduating seniors that are enrolled or plan to enroll in a two-year Associate Degree program in a mechanical or electrical field or a related area at one of the technical colleges. The scholarships are awarded annually with one-half (½) of the scholarship being paid in each of two consecutive years. Related technical areas mean applied technical and engineering fields, such as architecture, automobile and engine technology, mechanical and commercial drafting and design, machine tool technology, tool and die making, graphic arts, welding, and those fields normally associated with manufacturing, industry and design. Related technical areas do not include agri-business, business education, general education, marketing education, health service occupations, home economics or municipal services. The Wisconsin Technical College System is one of the finest in the nation and offers its graduates the best in career and employment opportunities. More and more employers are looking to our Wisconsin technical colleges for employees with two-year Associate Degrees for positions that offer job responsibility and advancement. Over twenty (20) two-year Associate Degree programs have been approved for the Walters Technical Scholarships (See attached schedule). Many of the approved programs are offered by technical colleges located in the northern two-thirds of the state. (Check the various Wisconsin Technical College catalogs and publications, available in your guidance office, for complete information on the location of the college(s) offering the program of your choice.) It is important that you plan ahead for your two-year Associate Degree. Starting in your freshman year of high school is not too soon. You must be able to meet the minimum entrance requirements of your chosen program at the time you graduate from high school. Most of the two-year Associate Degree programs require algebra as a prerequisite. Other recommended courses, depending on the program you plan to take, include English, advanced algebra, geometry, trigonometry, general science, chemistry, physics, mechanical and architectural drafting, machine shop, blueprint reading, electricity and computers. Work with your guidance counselor to pinpoint the specific courses you will need for your individual program. High schools in northern Wisconsin that are selected to participate in the Walters Technical Scholarship program are assured of having at least one (1) scholarship available to them and, in some cases, there may be more. In no case are the students in one high school in competition with the students in another high school for the available scholarships. (Check with your high school guidance office for the dollar amount and the number of scholarships available at your high school.)

2 ELIGIBILITY In order to be eligible for the Walters Technical Scholarships, you must: 1. Be in the senior class which will graduate in the Spring of each year and be planning to attend one of the technical colleges of the Wisconsin Technical College System as a full-time student in the fall. 2. Be enrolled or plan to enroll in an approved two-year Associate Degree program at that institution (see attached schedule). 3. Meet the minimum entrance requirements of the two-year Associate Degree program to be enrolled in at the time the applicant graduates from high school. 4. Demonstrate a need for financial assistance. SELECTION PROCESS In order to be considered for the Walters Technical Scholarships, you must submit a completed application form to their high school guidance office. After the due date, all applications will be forwarded to the Selection Committee. Based upon the eligibility criteria outlined above, the Selection Committee will select the recipient(s) on the basis of the applications submitted. The applications will be judged on the following criteria: 1. Ability. 2. Aptitude. 3. Desire to succeed. 4. A demonstrated interest in the selected field as shown by the applicant's high school course work, hobbies, and other interests. 5. The applicant's class ranking shall not be a relevant factor. SELECTION COMMITTEE Although the Walters Technical Scholarship program is area wide, the selection of the recipient(s) for the scholarship(s) being awarded at your high school will be made by a local selection committee. The selection committee will be persons who are not related to Francis O. Walters, any member of his family, or any of the applicants and their families. The selection of the recipient(s) will be made on an objective and nondiscriminatory basis without regard to race, creed, national origin, or sex, and subject to any required Internal Revenue Service or other approvals of such selection procedures. The recipient(s) of the Walters Technical Scholarship(s) will be announced at your high school class awards day.

3 AWARD PAYMENT If you are awarded a scholarship, payment will be made in two parts. One-half (½) of the scholarship will be paid when you are accepted for enrollment in a qualifying twoyear Associate Degree program starting in the fall following graduation, and the remaining one-half (½) of the scholarship will be paid when you have been accepted for enrollment in the same two-year Associate Degree program at the start of the second year of the program the following fall. BMO Private Bank will make the scholarship payments payable to the institution which you are attending, and forward the check to you. It will be your responsibility to deliver those funds to the institution. You must be enrolled as a full-time student at the institution. If, due to a serious accident or illness, you are unable to enroll for the fall semester, contact BMO Private Bank at once, as it may be possible to make other arrangements. If you are called into active military service before the start of the fall semester, your scholarship will be held, provided you apply for reinstatement of the scholarship within three (3) months after discharge and enroll in college at the start of the next semester. Application forms for the Walters Technical Scholarship program are available at your high school guidance office. Application forms must be completed and returned to the guidance office no later than March 2, 2016 at 3:35 p.m. Applications which are not complete, or are not received by this time, will not be considered eligible.

4 The Walters Technical Scholarship Fund Two-Year Associate Degree Program Scholarship Application The intent of the Walters Technical Scholarships is to provide financial assistance to graduating high school seniors who enroll at one of the sixteen (16) Wisconsin Technical Colleges in a program leading to a two-year associate degree in the technical and industrial area. (Check with your Guidance Office for the approved list of two-year associate degree programs.) Scholarships will be available to applicants based on ability, aptitude, desire to succeed, a demonstrated interest in the selected field by the applicant s high school course work, hobbies, and other interests, and a need for financial assistance. In addition to completing this application form, the applicant should furnish two letters of recommendation as well as a copy of their high school transcript. One of the letters of recommendation should be from a member of the community who is not a relative or a member of the school staff. The other recommendation must be from a school staff member.
