1 University of Louisville Faculty Credentials - Justification Report for Fall 2005 Public Health - Bioinformatics (PHBI) PHBI STAT FOR BIOINFORTICS Datta, Susmita Univ of Georgia University of Georgia (Physics) University of Calcutta Public Health Clin Investigati (PHCI) PHCI BENCH TO BEDSIDE Hornung, Carlton Dr. Hornung has been the Principal Investigator on a Clinical Research Curriculum Award (K30) which was funded by the NIH to train the next generation of clinician scientists. As director of this training program, more than 15 physicians have received masters degrees and 8 are currently pursuing the PhD degree in Epidemiology and Clinical Investigation. In addition to the K30 award, Dr. Hornung is the Principal Investigator on an NIH funded T35 training grant. Dr. Hornung has also served on several NIH study sections for T32, T35, K07-08 and K12 training grants.

2 HLTH SER OUTCOMES RES Studts, Jamie (Clinical Psychology) University of Kentucky Dr. Jamie Studts is an Assistant Professor of medicine, teaches Introduction to Health Services and Outcomes Research in the CREST program. Dr. Studts holds a PhD in psychological sciences. His primary responsibilities are research and the provision of psychological services to cancer patients at the James Graham Brown Cancer Center. Dr. Studts has received research funding by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the Kentucky Lung Cancer Research Program. His research includes health services topics including the assessment of achieving the standard of care in providing professional psychological services for breast cancer care; and outcomes topics including behavioral, cognitive, and affective outcomes following lung cancer screening; and fatigue and fatigue-related outcomes in an orofacial pain population. Dr. Studts is highly qualified to teach this course on health services and outcomes research. 3 PHCI FUNDAMENTALS OF BIOSTAT Hornung, Carlton The Fundaments of Biostatistics and the accompanying Laboratory are required courses for the M.Sc. degree as part of the clinical research training program. The course enrolls physicians and an occasional nurse who is working as a study coordinator in a clinical department in the of Medicine. The focus of the course is to introduce physician-investigators to quantitative research methods and to prepare them to work with a biostatistician in their clinical research. Dr. Hornung as been course director since the course was introduced in Dr. Hornung course work for the PhD in Sociology from (1972) included several graduate level courses in statistics and quantitative research methods. He began his academic career at the University of Maryland where he taught undergraduate and advanced graduate courses in statistics in the Department of Sociology. He began work towards the degree at of Hygiene and Public Health in 1977 while simultaneously working as a Policy Analyst for the Graduate Medical Education National Advisory Committee in the Health Services Administration where he was in charge of the tec PHCI CLINICAL TRAILS II Hornung, Carlton Clinical Trials II and Clinical Trials III is a sequence of courses designed for the clinician investigator (i.e.,, D, DSD, etc.) enrolled in the CREST program to gain experience in all aspects of the design and performance of clinical trials. Dr. Hornung coordinates guest lectures and input from a variety of experienced faculty from the of Medicine and physician scientists at the Health Center. The focus of Clinical Trials II is the Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and International Conference on Harmonization of Technical Documents (ICH) guidelines for conducting Phase I to Phase IV clinical trials. Clinical Trials III is conducted with one or more clinician scientists who are principal investigators of ongoing clinical trials who act as preceptors of CREST trainees. Dr. Hornung as been course director since these courses were introduced in Dr. Hornung is an experienced clinical investigator. He was a Vanguard Investigator in the Antihypertension, Lipid Lowering to Prevent Heart Attach Trial (ALLHAT) sponsored by the NIH as well as an investigator in the New Approaches to Coronary Intervention (NACI) study also supported by NIH. Ms. Harts' PhD Communication best equips her to teach this course. Dr. Gregg possesses the necessary blend of academic and professional credentials to successfully teach this course, namely experience in teaching, practicing and publishing in the communications field. She has co-authored numerous peer-reviewed published articles, abstracts, book chapters, and conference papers, all of which were specifically in the field of medical / scientific communication. She was nominated as University Distinguished Teacher Award at Michigan State University in By way of professional experience other than in the University setting, Dr. Gregg was a special project coordinator/communications Supervisor for Heartland Senior Services in Iowa in In sum, Dr.Gregg is fully qualified to teach Scientific Communication to CREST students. PHCI MENTORED RESEARCH Hornung, Carlton Dr. Hornung is a member of the Senior Graduate Faculty of the University. This status is accorded by the Graduate to faculty who are judged by peers to have sufficient teaching and research experience to mentor students in the preparation of their masters thesis (or professional paper) and doctoral dissertations.
