If you have the instrument and haven t gotten down to finding those notes yet, let s get going. Adv Beg The Ins and Outs of Organizing House Concerts Thom McCain House Concerts at Glenbrook has featured more than 75 artists in Jan s and my home and yard over the past 13 years. They continue to be very rewarding and an exciting part of our lives. We ll share with you topics pertaining to holding house concerts such as: choosing artists; venue and schedule considerations, invitation lists, donation amounts, preparation for performances; building an audience, legal issues, and making sure you are having fun! All 3:00 PM SUNDAY Scandinavian Fiddle Duets Rick & Hillary Wagner (from festival performing duo, Jim s Red Pants) Participants will learn one or two Scandinavian fiddle tunes with 2nd fiddle parts. The focus will be on style / rhythmic bowing. Handout will be provided. Adv Guitar Playing Within the Chord (tunes & improvisation) Barry Chern It s not always about the scale, especially in folk styles. As the playing of two of my heroes Maybelle Carter and Mississippi John Hurt shows us, a lot of tune can emerge while we are still fingering the chord. In fact, the chord is usually the framework of most melodies. So why wave your fingers all over the place looking for a note? Hold onto that chord, and hear what its internal voices are saying. Adv Beg/Int Woody Guthrie Celebration & Sing Bill Schilling Participants will join in singing songs to celebrate the life of Woody Guthrie (born July 14, 1912). Lyric and chord sheets (32 page handout) will be provided. Information about Woody and the songs will be shared during the workshop. Choose to lead a song or just join in playing and singing as we celebrate the father of American folk music. All Examining Songs from the Great Lakes Joanne Laessig A heritage of songs from the Great Lakes region gives us a sense of place and shared history from the American and Canadian sides. Songs of ships and shipwrecks, rivers and lumberjacks, settlers on the land and workers on the canals, both joyful and tragic, help shape the identity of this part of the world. Handout will be provided. All 7
