Introduction History, Advantages, Common Uses OS-Level Virtualization Hypervisors Type 1 vs. type 2 hypervisors Paravirtualization VMWare vs Virtual Box
Creating a virtual version of a device or resource Virtual version treated as a single resource Example: Hard Drive partitions
IBM CP/CMS Late 1960's First virtual machine OS CP Control Program CMS Cambridge (Control) Monitor System Developed for time-sharing on mainframes Eventually evolved into z/vm
Resource Optimization Consolidation Testing Legacy Systems
Virtual Machines VMware, Virtual Box, etc. Java JVM Server virtualization Video-game Emulation
Basic Concept: Partitions the physical machines resources at the operating system level. All Virtual Machines share a single operating system kernel (called the host OS) Difference between OS-Level/Hardware virtualization
Host OS traps and redirects: I/O requests Privileged instructions Access to devices In this way, the guest OS shares resources with the host OS (similar to chroot mechanism in UNIX), and a copy-on-write mechanism is employed when guest OS does I/O
Advantages: Easy access between files between host/guest OS Shares execution environment with host OS. Minimal startup/shutdown time, low resource cost, high scalability Disadvantages: Not flexible cannot virtualize any other OS except host OS
Scalable website testing Vulnerability assessment for OS s Application Virtualization
Concept: A Hypervisor is some form of software, firmware, or hardware that has the potential to create and run virtual machines. Also known as a Virtual Machine Monitor, it handles all hardware operations for the Guest Operating Systems
Hypervisor runs in privileged mode, Guest OS runs in user mode The Hypervisor traps all calls by the Guest OS. It simulates all hardware operations, such as disk space and logical operations
The Hypervisor can come in two different types. Type 1 which acts on top of the hardware, and Type 2 which acts inside a OS OS OS OS OS Hypervisor Hardware Hypervis or Operating System Hardware Type 1 Type 2
Type 1: Also known as native or bare metal, runs directly on the hardware of the Host Machine First created by IBM in 1960 s, the Type 1 Hypervisor CP/CMS is the predecessor to IBM s z/vm system
Type 2: This is a hosted Hypervisor that runs within a operating system Most cases of recent virtualization software are Type 2, they run as a piece of software running inside the standard OS
Bare Metal vs. Application (Hosted) Type 1 and Hardware Type 2 and Software
Parallels Desktop Type 2 hypervisor Runs other OS on Mac Generally for one user IBM z/vm Type 1 hypervisor Runs hundreds to thousands Linux servers on one mainframe Generally for a business
Type 1 Type 2 Parallels Server (Mac) IBM PowerVM Vmware vsphere ESXi Microsoft Hyper-V Xen Hypervisor Citrix XenServer (Open Source) OpenVZ (Open Source) Vmware Player Vmware Workstation Microsoft Virtual PC Oracle VirtualBox (Open Source) KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) (Open Source)
Type 1 Advantages Type 1 Disadvantages Increased security Need particular HW component Allows higher density hardware Strict HW requirements Hypervisor has direct access to HW Costly Type 2 Advantages Host OS controls HW access Ease of Access Allows for multiple OS s Type 2 Disadvantages Decreased Security Lower VM Density Needs a host OS first
Hypercall Modified guest OS Near-native performance
Virtualize physical hardware
No direct access Guest OS -> VMM
Advantages Good for running different OS Disadvantages Security Compatability Support & Maintenance
VMWare Windows 3.1, 95, 98, NT, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista Linux FreeBSD Mac OS X Solaris VirtualBox Windows 3.1, 95, 98, NT, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista Linux OpenBSD FreeBSD OS/2 Mac OS X Solaris
VMWare Free for members but with restrictions Virtual Box Free for personal and educational use
VMWare Resource Demanding, heavy start up Virtual Box Very lightweight
VMWare Well known in industries with proven reliability and better snapshot support Virtual Box Newer and more prone to bugs Not well known or used by industries.
