2 Using this guide The Colby College curriculum supports students interested in pursuing studies in architecture, the built environment, and design. Created by the Art Department, this guide helps students identify curricular options at Colby and take advantage of opportunities available to them both on and off campus. Students should use the guide to enrich their major of choice or to design an independent major in architectural studies. The following pages include: An overview of courses currently available at Colby, organized into the following focus areas: 3D arts and design, digital media, history of architecture, environmental arts, environmental design, and cultural geography. Departments and programs offering relevant courses include Art, American Studies, Computer Science, English, Environmental Studies, Math, Physics and Astronomy, and Theater and Dance. Off-campus opportunities available to Colby students, including study abroad and summer study programs. Preliminary information for students interested in pursuing a graduate degree in architecture. Contact information for faculty and staff resources on campus. We encourage students to consult this guide early in their studies at Colby. They should discuss their curricular and professional interests with their major advisor(s) and with Professor of Art Bevin Engman, Coordinator of Architecture and Design ([email protected]). Created February 2016; last updated April 29,
3 Developing a course of study Students at Colby who are interested in studying architecture, design, and their relationship to the environment have many curricular choices available to them, within and outside the Art Department. Relevant courses can be divided into the following focus areas: 3D arts and design, digital media, history of architecture, environmental art, environmental design, and cultural geography. Environmental art is a term that once referred specifically to the Land and Earth Art movements. Today it is used as an umbrella term to describe visual art that engages with social and political issues relating to the natural, built, and urban environment. Some use it to describe art that specifically aims to improve human relationships with the natural world. Below we use the term broadly to refer to all arts, including literature, performance, etc. Like environmental art, environmental design can have multiple meanings that encompass architectural, environmental, and social contexts. As an interdisciplinary field of inquiry it involves the planning and building of communities and the design of sustainable environments. Cultural geography describes the broad study of cultural products in relation to space and place. It can include cultural ecology, urban planning, globalization, political geography, and much more. Students should note that some of the courses list below are not offered every year and may not be open to all majors/minors (* indicates courses that carry no prerequisites).
