1 Fashion Technology Honolulu Community College Comprehensive Assessment Report College Mission Statement Honolulu Community College's mission is to: Serve the community as an affordable, flexible, learning centered, open-door comprehensive Community College that meets the post-secondary educational needs of individuals, businesses, and the community. Serve the Pacific Rim as the primary technical training center in areas such as transportation, information technology, education, communications, construction, and public and personal services. Program Mission Statement The Fashion Technology program's mission is to serve the community as a learning-centered, open door program that provides technical training to meet the demands of the fashion industry and the needs of the individual. An open-exit option allows the students to identify their career objectives and participate in program exploration. Part I: Executive Summary of Program Status (Fill this in last) Part II: Program Overview Program Description The curriculum is designed to provide competency for a wide range of occupations in the fashion industry. Theoretical knowledge and practical skills are applied in clothing construction, industrial sewing, flat patternmaking, designing, textiles, fashion sketching, grading, marking and cutting and computerized grading and marking. Internship or cooperative education experiences are available to interested students. This broad background enables students to select various occupations such as designer, patternmaker, cutter, or custom dressmaker. Program History The Fashion Technology program started in 1920 as part of the Territorial Trade School in Palama. Program SLOs Upon successful completion of an AAS degree from the Fashion Technology Department Program, the student should be able to: Design and sketch appropriate garment designs suitable to the market or customer. Select appropriate fabrics and notions suitable to the garment's design. Drape, draft or manipulate flat patterns to create accurate garment patterns. Lay perfected patterns correctly and economically onto markers or fabric. Cut fabric using appropriate tools, including power tools.
2 Construct garments using various sewing techniques. Fit garments on various body types and be able to make the proper adjustments. Grade the finished patterns into various sizes. Present the garments in a professional manner to "sell" the designs. Define the fashion industry's manufacturing process. Admission Requirements The admission requirement for Fashion Technology students is that the students are at least 18 years old or over, who can benefit from the instruction offered. The students are given written exams and projects which are evaluated thoroughly. What kinds of evidence can you provide? (It helps if you provide some samples such as pictures of projects, descriptions of capstone projects, or other relevant samples). Our annual spring fashion show is evidence of our students' learning and quality of their work. Upon request we can provide photos and DVD discs of
4 the events for the past 20 years. Part V: Curriculum Revisions How many of your courses have up-to-date curriculum forms (on file in building 6) with the stated course student learning outcomes, methods of evaluation, and methods of instruction? (Check your course files at the central file collection on the 2nd floor of the administration building the goal is to have all courses upto-date within a 5 year period) Which courses, if any, have you made revisions to, briefly describe the revisions made, and when were the revisions implemented? Do all of your instructors (both full-time and part-time) include the course (not program) SLOs into their syllabus? Yes. Where do the instructors get the course SLOs from? From a list of SLOs in our department files. Part VI: Survey Results Does your program utilize any types of surveys to gather data on student performance (such as knowledge surveys), student satisfaction (such as satisfaction surveys), or student placement (either placement in jobs or passing a state licensure exam)? No. If yes, please provide some of the results. If no, what types of surveys would you like to implement in the program next year? Not sure. Part VII: Analysis of Data How well are students progressing through the program? (Do they complete the certificate/degree within the specified time-frame?) Most complete the program in years because of busy work schedules. Are the measurement of your Program and Course SLOs providing adequate information to evaluate student learning or should new measures be developed? Adequate. Does the program have sufficient resources to promote student learning? Are other resources needed such as personnel, facilities, or equipment? If additional resources are required, what evidence/rationale is there to support this? Another full time instructor or lab assistant is needed to extend the lab times for slower students to complete their work. Are all safety issues addressed? Yes, all safety rules are reviewed at the beginning of every class. What challenges exist for the program? Much of the industry is going over seas. New industry with new designs and up dated equipment and styles are introduced each year. What opportunities exist for the program? New businesses being started each year. Otherwise Los Angeles and New York has many lucrative positions. Part VIII: Action Plan
5 What tasks/goals have you set for the upcoming year (Fall 2007/Spring 2008)? New equipment needed to up date old models. Who will be responsible for completing these tasks/goals? Department Liason. What is the timeline for achieving these tasks/goals? 5 years. Part IX: Budget Implications Are there any budgetary impacts for carrying out your action plan? More money to run the department with the latest equipment is always needed. Do any of your action plan items require integration into the strategic plan? (If so, have you notified your division chair/ Dean of this action?) No.
