1 BEAUFORT COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE ~BUSINESS DIVISION~ A Computer Programming Program Review: July, 2012 l. Description/Purpose Associate in Applied Science Degree The Computer Programming curriculum prepares individuals for employment as computer programmers and related positions through study and applications in computer concepts, logic, programming procedures, languages, generators, operating systems, networking, data management, and business operations. Students will solve business computer problems through programming techniques and procedures, using appropriate languages and software. The primary emphasis of the curriculum is hands-on training in programming and related computer areas that provide the ability to adapt as systems evolve. Graduates should qualify for employment in business, industry, and government organizations as programmers, programmer trainees, programmer/analysts, software developers, computer operators, systems technicians, database specialists, computer specialists, software specialists, or information systems managers. ll. Staffing SACS CR This program was staffed in by one full-time lead instructor and three additional instructors. The instructors teach computer programming courses. Part-time instructors are employed on an as-needed basis. SACS CS 3.2.8, 3.29, & Lead instructor and part time instructors meet hiring requirements with an appropriate degree/s and experience in the field. Employment policies and records can be found in the College s Human Resources Office. SACS CS Instructors are evaluated annually. (Refer to IE web site assessment section Performance Evaluation. ) Policies pertaining to personnel evaluation can be found on page 69 of the BCCC Faculty/Staff Manual. SACS CS Instructors are required to participate in ongoing professional development. Policies pertaining to professional development and other related academic matters are documented on page 122 of the BCCC Faculty/Staff Manual. lll. Program Data A. SACS CR 2.11 Program Operating Cost: The Computer Programming program costs can be found page 4 part V "A." B. SACS FR 4.1 Enrollment: Forty-seven students were enrolled during fall & spring semesters of This total includes full- and part-time, day and evening, and first- and second-year students. The program graduated 7 students in the spring of 2011 (1 Associate Degree and 6 Certificate). C. SACS FR 4.1 Certification/Licensure: N/A D. SACS FR 4.1 Job Placement: There were no returns for this program from the Graduate Follow-Up Survey. Therefore, no data to report. E. SACS FR 4.1 Employer Satisfaction: No data to report. 1

H. SACS CR 2.5 Advisory Committee: The advisory committee meets every spring semester. Employers of BCCC graduates were asked to complete an opinion survey during the annual Advisory Committee meeting. (Refer to III f. for details.) In addition minutes are attached and also kept on file in the office of the Dean of Instruction and the office of the Business Division Chairperson. I. SACS CS Program/Student Outcomes at Program Completion: The Computer Programming program is a competency-based program. J. SACS CR 2.7.2, 2.7.3, & CS Curriculum Currency: The Computer Programming program was developed in A statewide Curriculum Improvement Project (CIP) for computer programming was completed in July of The computer programming curriculum was thoroughly reviewed. As a result of this project, recommendations and changes to the curriculum were implemented in the Fall 2006 semester. The curriculum is reviewed annually. (Any modifications are reviewed first by BCCC s program personnel and related advisory committees then forwarded to the BCCC s Curriculum Committee. Recommendations for changes or modifications are presented to BCCC s Administrative Council for approval. Once approved, the modifications are submitted to the NC Community College System.) The Computer Programming program is included in the NCCCS approved program list on file in the Office of the Dean of Instruction. K. SACS 2.5 Response to last year s Program Evaluation results: Refer to BCCC Institutional Effectiveness Plan End-of-Year Report Goal Assessment Plan. lv. A Program Status & Planning A. Status 1. Facilities and Equipment: Lab - space adequate; Classrooms - space adequate; Equipment - adequate, but needs updating for software requirements on a regular basis. 2. Employment Demand: North Carolina Planning Region Q (includes Beaufort County), indicated on NC ESC Report data, shows occupational supply and demand trends/projections. (Refer to NC Occupational Trends page that is attached.) ESC is one indicator of employment demand. A state-wide projection of need is attached. Data on BCCC service area (Regions Q & R) is not available. According to program personnel, 2

3 many hiring requests are made directly to program personnel for program students. Requests also come from Advisory Committee meetings. 3. Strengths: Personnel - Instructor/s are well-qualified in their program area/s. Program The program graduating student responding report completely or partially accomplishing their educational goal. The program graduating student responding is satisfied with the Computer Programming program. The employer of the Computer Programming graduates reports satisfaction with the graduates and their training. Equipment and Facilities - adequate, but needs continuous updating. B. SACS CR 2.5 Short and Long Range Planning 1. Expected Measurable Outcomes met or exceeded: "Eighty-five (85%) or more of BCCC Computer Programming graduates responding to the Graduate Follow-Up survey will report that BCCC met their intended objective and will recommend their program to others." "Seventy-five percent (75%) or more of the program graduates responding to the Graduate Follow-Up survey will report that they found employment in their field of study or related to their field of study." 2. Assessment and Results: (Response will be documented in the current BCCC Planning and Institutional Effectiveness Plan.) C. (SO 1, 3) -Investigate feasibility of developing a matriculation agreement with ECU s Computer Programming Curriculum. -Software upgrades: Update software in computer labs as needed. -Investigate computerized tests for testing new students computer/keyboarding skills. -Continue to create improved relationships with high schools within the service area to share information on our curriculums. -Continue dialog with advisory board as to curriculum improvements and expected job skills for our graduates. -Continue to upgrade and expand lecture recording capabilities (hardware & software) at some instructor workstations in classrooms. -SACS -Increase graduation rate. -Faster partnerships. -Keep technology current. -Retention of students in computer classes. -Aid in online instruction. -Division Chair 3
