Deadline: Tuesday, March 15, 2016 The State Bar of California is seeking nominations for the 2016 Loren Miller Legal Services Award and President s Pro Bono Awards. Both awards recognize extraordinary service to low-income Californians. Please consider any colleagues or peers who you believe may qualify for either award. The Loren Miller Legal Services Award is a lifetime achievement tribute that honors long-standing dedication to legal service to the poor and breadth of service. Up to nine President's Pro Bono Service Awards may be given for the provision of outstanding pro bono legal services in the 2015 calendar year (or academic year for law school and law student nominations). Please note that we are proud to announce that this year we have established new online nomination forms! Award decision will be made by April 30, TITLE: Sanford Heisler Kimpel Public Interest Diversity Fellow SALARY: $52,000/year FLSA STATUS: Exempt TIME STATUS: Full-Time FELLOWSHIP DATES: Fall 2016 through Summer 2017 (12 months) SUMMARY The Fellow will work closely with the supervising attorney(s) of the Legal Aid Society- Employment Law Center (LASELC) and a California Employment Lawyers Association (CELA) firm in all aspects of the organization s or firm s practice. The work performed by the Fellow may include direct services, litigation, public education/outreach, legal research and writing, community service, or any combination of these. REQUIREMENTS 1. California Bar membership. (This requirement may be waived for a reasonable period of time, at the discretion of the LAS-ELC, to allow the Fellow to take and pass the Bar examination.) 2. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 3. Superior academic background. 4. Ability to travel as required. 5. Zero to three years legal experience. 6. Commitment to public interest law and social justice work. 7. At the end of the Fellowship, the Fellow is required to write a minimum 2-5 page essay about his/her experience and what he/she learned. ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS (non-exhaustive list) 1. Diverse backgrounds. 2. Judicial clerkship or externship. 3. Foreign language abilities. 4. Knowledge of California and federal employment law principles and civil procedures. RESPONSIBILITIES Litigation 1. Under supervision, handle all aspects of state and federal court litigation, including pre-complaint investigation, complaint drafting, motion practice, discovery, trial preparation, trial, post-trial briefing and appellate work. 2. Under supervision, participate in negotiating and executing settlement of litigation. 3. Communicate with and advise clients about litigation matters. 4. Keep abreast of new issues in the field of employment law, legal ethics, and all other matters necessary for the vigorous and competent representation of the client. 5. Maintain and preserve accurate, contemporaneous records of time spent on litigation and other work performed. Advocacy Other Than Litigation 1. Under supervision, participate in negotiating and executing settlement of pre-litigation matters. 2. Communicate with and advise clients about pre-litigation matters. 3. Give periodic informal assistance to lawyers, community workers, and individuals with employment problems. Community Legal Services 1. May work on pro bono projects as needed. 2. May represent clients at administrative law proceedings, including at the CUIAB, the EDD, the DLSE, the DFEH, the SPB, the DOL, the MSPB, and the EEOC. Administration 1. Participate in staff meetings as scheduled. 2. Participate in staff retreats and priority-setting meetings, as scheduled. 3. Participate in recruiting, screening, selection and orientation of new staff and volunteers. Community Work 1. Participate in community organizations, such as bar groups, employment rights organizations or coalitions, related to the work of the office, as requested. 2. Perform community outreach, as requested.

13 2016 Sanford Heisler Kimpel Public Interest Diversity Fellowship Application and Procedures The Foundation for Advocacy Inclusion and Resources (FAIR) is accepting applications for its third annual Sanford Heisler Kimpel Public Interest Diversity Fellowship, which will enable a new attorney to work full-time for two consecutive six-month terms at the (1) Legal Aid Society-Employment Law Center and (2) a law practice affiliated with the California Employment Lawyers Association (CELA), an organization of more than 1200 workers rights advocates throughout California. Sanford Heisler Kimpel, LLP, a leading national public interest firm, has made a generous donation to FAIR to fund a Fellow with salary and benefits during the first six months the fellow is working at Legal Aid SocietyEmployment Law Center. The applicant will then be matched with a CELA affiliated firm for the second six month term and be paid a salary and benefits by that entity. Applicants must have superior academic qualifications, be members of the California Bar (or anticipating becoming members by fall 2016), be committed to a career in social justice, and have 0-3 years of legal experience. Preference will be given to applicants with diverse backgrounds, demonstrated interest in employment law, clinical and/or pro bono and social justice interests, and plans to practice in California. Use SHK Fellowship in your subject line Sanford Heisler Kimpel Public Interest Diversity Fellowship Application Form UCLA Patent Law Clinic Clinical Faculty Supervisor UCLA School of Law seeks a patent bar attorney to teach its Patent Law Clinic. The Patent Law Clinic is taught by a patent bar attorney who supervises students to file patent applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on behalf of entrepreneurs, artists, scientists and other creators who would have a difficult time paying for legal services. The majority of the legal services consumers are directed to the Patent Law Clinic through the USPTO website. The Patent Law Clinic is offered during the fall and spring semesters. Under special permission from the USPTO, law students are primarily responsible for the work but the faculty member is responsible for overseeing the work during the academic year and vacation periods, including the summer months. In addition to supervising student work, the faculty member teaches a two-hour seminar once per week. The seminar provides students with instruction to help them develop basic skills required to file patent applications with the USPTO and to provide ethical and client-centered representation to a range of clients. Tasks which must be performed by the supervising attorney include instructing and supervising students in: 1. finding suitable pro bono patent clients capable of completing the patent drafting and filing process as mentored in supervision; 2. screening and interviewing prospective clients; 3. assessing inventions and writing prototype claims for searching; 4. searching for patents ; 5. preparing and reviewing preliminary novelty opinions based on search results; 6. preparing initial claim sets; 7. preparing and reviewing patent illustrations and specifications in support of initial claim sets; 8. preparing and reviewing inventor s declarations of inventorship, information disclosure statements including all search references, application data sheets, transmittal cover sheets, patent assignments and recordals;

14 9. completing case docket entries; 10. introducing general concepts and filing of US patent application and PCT applications relating to the same in class, and 11. prosecuting applications for patent in the USPTO as needed according to docket demands, in class and in supervision. The supervising attorney of the patent law clinic must have a J.D., be a member of the U.S. Patent Bar, have at least 5 years of intensive experience preparing, filing and prosecuting U.S. patent and PCT applications and be a licensed practitioner of the California State Bar. An excellent academic record; substantial, distinguished legal practice experience with a record of ongoing research or other creative work such as publications, law reform activities and significant contributions to the profession or professional organizations; experience within a distinct legal specialty; demonstrated commitment to teaching; prior successful law school teaching experience also strongly preferred. Experience in patent prosecution is a plus.
