21 ST CENTURY SKILLS 3 rd & 6 th Period The popularity of YouTube has made it possible for anyone to become a media publisher and can make an average person suddenly famous for a day. It seems that every week another video is posted that becomes a popular topic among friends and family members. Some of these videos are taken of other people with or without their knowledge. Consider the following scenario; you are on your way to school one day and are having a conversation with someone in your carpool that is getting rather animated. You are momentarily distracted when someone in the back seat makes a funny joke in an attempt to lighten the mood. You turn around to speak to the person and next thing you know you have jumped the curb and hit a stop sign. Meanwhile, a friend driving by who witnessed the accident thought it was funny and filmed the accident with their cell phone. The video is then posted on YouTube with the title Lousy Driver Alert! Answer the following questions about the scenario; o What is the likelihood you would know this video existed on YouTube? o Should the motorist who filmed the accident be required to get your release before posting the video? Why or why not? o Does this scenario violate any guidelines provided by YouTube? o If you became aware of the video, what would you do? o Should someone be allowed to capture a video of you without your knowledge? If you answer no, how could society police this action? Use the internet to research any lawsuits or charges that have been files against someone who has posted a YouTube video without the permission of the participants. Record your findings with a bulleted list in Word.
ACCOUNTING Use the following website to research how to dress for a job interview; 8 th Period Create a poster showing the clothing and accessories that would be appropriate for the interview along with the price of each item. Also, include somewhere on the poster the total price of the outfit.
ADVANCED COMPUTERS 1&2 4 th Period Use the following website to research how to dress for a job interview; Create a poster showing the clothing and accessories that would be appropriate for the interview along with the price of each item. Also, include somewhere on the poster the total price of the outfit.
COMPUTER APPLICATIONS/BUSINESS FOUNDATIONS II 1 st Period Research the internet to find economic factors that cause job layoffs or downsizing. Find information from people who have experienced being laid off or downsizing, either someone you know personally or research online, and record this information; o How long did they work for the company before being laid off or downsized? o What factors caused the layoff or downsizing? o How much time did you have to find a new job? o What financial problems did you encounter during the transition? In Word, make a list of the economic factors you found, either online or by talking to someone, and give your opinion of what you believe is causing such chaos in the economy and what could possibly be done differently to make it better.
TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS 7 2 nd Period Capturing Photos It took hundreds of years for the science of photography to fully develop. In 1826, Frenchman Nicéphore Niépce captured an image on photosensitive paper. However, the image was temporary. Sharing his secrets with Louis Daguerre, the duo created the first effective camera. Images were captured on silver-plated copper, coated with silver iodide and mercury. Their image-capturing system was called the daguerreotype process. The first cameras were little more than boxes. Glass lenses were added to provide focus and to adjust the detail found in the photographic images. Images were captured on photographic plates. Eventually, metal plates were replaced with film. Film photography had some serious limitations for the space program. NASA asked, How can we transmit high-resolution photographs back to Earth from thousands of miles out in space? To meet NASA s needs, new technologies were developed that converted light into electrical impulses that could be transmitted through space. NASA s research got many people thinking about a better way to produce photographs without using harmful chemicals. Then in 1981, Sony Corporation came up with a filmless camera that could take digital pictures without film. The new camera was called Mavica. Other companies also began to develop digital cameras, but their new digital cameras delivered images with very poor resolution. Today, digital cameras capture sharp high-resolution images. The following table explains the megapixels required to produce good quality photos of different sizes. Megapixel picture sizes 1-2 megapixel camera Suitable for 5x7 photos 3-4 megapixel camera Suitable for 8x10 photos 5-6 megapixel camera Suitable for 11x14 photos 8-10 megapixel camera Suitable for 13x19 photos 1. Find a digital camera or phone camera that you can use to take some pictures. 2. Determine the megapixel size of the camera and how to adjust the picture size. 3. Take pictures with the camera using different size settings. 4. Write down the picture size that you used for each picture. 5. three pictures to Mrs. Hawthorne at swilden@hhcsd.org so your pictures can be checked for quality. Be sure to choose pictures that are school appropriate.
